با خوندن این کتاب از این نویسنده، تصمیم گرفتم دیگه هزینه‌ای برای کتاباش در نظر نگیرم؛ نظر شخصیم اینه که یه شاهکار به اسم "کیمیاگر" نوشت، اما همین بود واقعا :)) این کتاب هیچ جایی نزدیک به کیمیاگر نیست و حتی می‌شه گفت وقت تلف کردن بود

An engaging, short novel about the people in the remote village of Viscos. A stranger arrives with eleven gold bars. He meets Miss Prym, a young woman who lives on her own and works at the town’s hotel. The stranger asks Miss Chantal Prym to tell the townsfolk that he has a proposition. He will give the townsfolk eleven bars of gold at the end of one week, if they arrange to have someone murdered.

The ordinary people of the town find themselves confronted by death and power, being forced to face their own inner conflicts and makes choices about their future. The author highlights that each and every one of us has the capacity for good or evil.

A compelling, well told story.

This book was first published in 2000.

The Devil and Miss Prym was published in 2000, but it reads like a morality play from the 16th century. The basic premise is that a stranger comes to a small town. He speaks to Miss Prym, the local barmaid and tells her his plan. He wishes to offer the villagers enough gold to improve their lot for generations. All they have to do is murder one of their own. How the villagers choose will answer for the stranger whether people are basically good or basically evil. Miss Prym struggles with whether to tell the other villagers of the deal. She knows where some of the gold is buried, and is also tempted to just dig it up and flee. She hopes the villagers will do the right thing, but she has no way of knowing how the mob mentality will play out. The novel is simply written, but suspenseful. Some of the good/evil; devil/angel discussions and metaphors are a bit drawn out, but all in all I enjoyed this book as a very basic story about a very complicated battle.

عندما تقرا رواية الرواية تعرف من البداية انه ابداع رائع لاظهار جانب الخير والشر في انسان وما قد يفعله للوصول الى ما يريد ويفعل اشياء قد نستطيع ان نقول خارج توقعاتهم وبطريقة لا تختلف عن الحيوانية في بعض المرات ( على رغم الرحمة التي موجودة في الحيوانات ولكن ليس لديهم فهم ك فهم البشري ).
دخول الشيطان(أو بلأحرى شيطان على شكل الانسان)الى القرية وما فعله بأهل القرية الذي كانوا يعلقون خيباتهم وجرائمهم على مر التاريخ على هذه المخلوق ( الشطان)ولكن هو بريء من ما فعله او قد يفعله اهل القرية فهو مجرد وسيلة للوصول الى مبتغاهم وعند حصول الجريمة او المصيبة يقولون انه من عمل الشيطان ولكن الشيطان بريء منهم فهو صحيح صاحب الفكرة ولكن الاختيار والعمل في يد الانسان,فما تفعله انت تحاسب عليه انت وليس من قال لك الفكرة.
انصح بشدة قراءة هذه الرواية لان فيه عبر وحوارات رائعة من قبل الكاتب الكبير باولو كويلو, وايظا يظهر لك الصراعات بين الخير والشر في الانسان بطريقة صحيح ليست جديدة ولكن مشوقة ورائعة.

ROMANA:

Stiam ca voi avea dificultati cu Coelho dar tot am cumparat acest roman si iata ca l-am citit. Si chiar l-am citit, pana spre final. Are un prolog promitator si atat. Un strain insotit de diavol ingroapa niste lingouri de aur (sic!) in apropierea unui sat aflat in decadere. Ii povesteste asta lui Chantal, care trebuie sa dea sfoara in tara (in sat) ca lingourile vor apartine satului daca va fi savarsita o crima => si daca asta se va intampla, "strainul" va trage concluzia ca toti oamenii sunt rai. Prostia asta mi s-a parut suspecta de la inceputul cartii.
O gramada de idiotentii, satul nu mai are decat cativa locuitori (sub 300), nu mai exista nici un om tanar, toti au plecat la oras (dar exista domnisoara Prym care e tanara si apoi culmea! si un flacau care vinde paine). Cu toate ca "toti" vin la barul satului unde Chantal Prym expune intriga strainului, sunt doar cateva voci care discuta una alta. Persoana aleasa pentru sacrificare este simplu de ghicit.
Pana la urma nu se intampla nimic si e o carte pe care daca vrei sa o citesti o citesti degeaba. Dorintele pseudofilozofice ale lui Coelho esueaza amarnic si toate aluziile la dumnezeu si bine si rau si diavol la un moment dat iti ajung la saturatie. Sfaturi de viata/discursuri up-lifting a la Elle / Cosmopolitan. Clisee gen "toti oamenii sunt rai", "totdeauna este mai usor sa crezi in propria ta bunatate decat sa-i infrunti pe ceilalti si sa lupti pentru drepturile tale".
Care e concluzia? Nici una. Coehlo si scepticismul religios sunt doua notiuni incompatibile. Dupa cum zice chiar el la un moment dat: "era o discutie teologica ce nu prezenta nici un interes acum".

ENGLISH:

I knew I was going to have difficulties with Coelho but I still bought this novel and here I am writing my review after having read it. To the end, unbelievable. It has a promising prologue and that's it. An man (the stranger) accompanied by a devil buries some gold bars (sic!) near a declining village. He tells this to Chantal, who must spread the new (in the village) that the gold will belong to the village if a crime is committed, and if that happens, the "stranger" will conclude that all people are evil. This nonsense seemed suspicious to me from the beginning of the book.

Lots of stupidities and inconsistencies, the village has only a few inhabitants (under 300), there is no young man, all went to the city (but there is Miss Prym who is young and then surprise! a young guy who sells bread). Although "everyone" comes to the village bar where Chantal Prym will expose the stranger's intrigue, there are only a few voices discussing each other and taking the lead. The person chosen for sacrifice is easy to guess. This whole bumbling is fantastically badly written.
After all, nothing happens. This book adds nothing to your cultural growth. Coelho's pseudo-philosophical desires bitterly fail, and all allusions to God and good and evil and devil at one point reach saturation. Life tips / up-lifting speeches a la Elle / Cosmopolitan. Cliches like "all people are evil", "it is always easier to believe in your own goodness than to face the others and fight for your rights".
What is the conclusion? There is none. Coehlo and religious skepticism are two incompatible notions. As the authors himself says at one point: "it was a theological discussion that has no interest now."

جدال میان نیکی و بدی به همون سادگیه که فکر می کنیم؟
آیا واقعا ذات انسان به نیکی تمایل داره؟

Fantastically metaphorical book with lots of thoughts about good and evil. The message are we in our core evil or good or is there evil and good sometimes with us in the form of an devil or angel?

The strength of this book is that the story continues beyond the last page.

Romanzo molto breve, letto in una giornata. Pieno di simbologia e leggende di un piccolo paesino formato da pochissimi abitanti.
Tratta della continua ed eterna lotta tra il Bene ed il Male, che affligge tutta l'umanità.
Linguaggio colto ma diretto, filosofeggiante ma allo stesso tempo semplice.
Breve riflessione sui comportamenti dell'uomo se messo di fronte a delle scelte.

The Devil and Miss Prym is the third book in the On the Seventh Day series by Brazilian author, Paulo Coelho. It is translated into English by Amanda Hopkinson and Nick Caistor. As old Berta sits on her verandah watching, a stranger arrives in the town of Viscos, a man who comes to stay a week, and brings the devil. Chantal Prym, barmaid at the only hotel in town, is intrigued when the stranger wants to show her something in the woods.

The gold bar buried near the Y shaped stone would let Chantal leave town and get on with a decent life. The other ten bars, hidden elsewhere, would ease the pressures on the town. All she has to do to have that gold bar is to tell the town they need to commit a murder by the end of the week. If they do it, they get to keep the ten bars. But Viscos is a town of good people: surely, they would not?

There you have it: a totally unrealistic premise used as a vehicle for debate on Good and Evil. Viscos is a conveniently small, isolated town full of older people, no children. The oldest resident, widow Berta has, conveniently, no family or friends, and is visited only by the ghost of her late husband. The youngest, Chantal is, conveniently, an orphan, completely unattached. The stranger is, conveniently, rich, powerful, tortured and believes himself to be a good man.

The story is filled with anecdotes: parables heavy on message, moralistic lessons lacking subtlety, hypotheticals built on an artificial situation. Good and Evil feature frequently, angels and devils play important roles. The characters are stereotypes. The whole thing is tedious and a bit clumsy.

I choose this book as my prize for completing SLC summer reading program, and now I'm so glad not just to have read the book but to also own it. This novel tells the story of a stranger who comes to a small mountain town offering a fortune in gold to the community if anyone is killed within the coming week. The man's real goal is to see if there is any good--or just evil--in the world, to see if life and suffering have meaning and significance.

The temptations and choices are painted vividly in the portrayal of imperfect people having to make the most important decision of their lives. The concepts of good and evil are explored, drawing from various cultures and religions. This is a book that makes you look at your self and ponder why you make your decisions. It's also a book filled with beautiful writing, legends, and stories that deserves to be savored.

This is one of the rare books that changes me in some way, that sticks with me and leaves me thinking weeks and months later. I'd definitely recommend it.

معظم الخلاصات الاحصائية تنتج عن دراسة مجموعة كبيرة من البشر , أحد شخصيات هذه الرواية رواية الشيطان و الآنسة بريم للكاتب باولو كويلو , قرر القيام بأمر مماثل باحثا عن الخير و الشر في نفوس أهل قرية اختارها بعد ان فقد زوجته وابنته , رغبة منه في أن يعرف هل البشر مجبولون على الشر ام على الخير , وذلك عبر اغراء الجميع بسبائك ذهبية مقابل قتل ضحية بريئة , الرواية ممتعة جداً و فيها الكثير من السلطة والطاعة والاغراء والسيطرة و صراعات واسعة النطاق بين الصالح والطالح , وفوق هذا الرواية تتحدث عن تقبل الآخر واستيعاب اختلافات البشر عن بعضهم البعض مهما كان المجتمع صغيراً ومحدوداً , فالانسان كيان فريد بذاته ومن الاستحالة بمكان ان يتشابه أحد مع الآخر تماماً خاصة فيما يجول في النفس من افكار , وبصورة عامة كانت فكرة وجود ما يسمى النفاق الجمعي طاغية على النص, اي حين يدعي الجميع انهم اصحاب نفوس رحيمة بينما يكونون في الحقيقة يقتاتون على ارزاق بعضهم البعض و قد عبر عن ذلك حين قيل في الرواية " الناس عموماً و يكرهون مشاهدة حفلات مصارعة الثيران ,و لكن ذلك لا يمنعهم من شراء لحم الثور , متذرعين بأنه اي الثور , مات ميتة نبيلة " , وكمعظم اعمال باولو كويلو , هناك الحب , هناك المغزى و هناك الكثير من الروحانية , الرواية فريدة و مميزة و تقيمي لها 4/5 وانصح بها .
