The first story is the weakest, but they definitely get better. These stories allow Simmons to do what he's best at--humanizing a future shaped by incredible technological advances.

Pretty solid collection of five novellas, four of which had been previously published.

The best is the opener, "Looking for Kelly Dahl," in which an alcoholic ex-teacher, on the verge of suicide, is visited by one of his former, troubled students. Beautiful and moving.

"Orphans of the Helix" is set within the author's Hyperion universe. A generation ship encounters an alien distress signal, but heeding it may be more complicated than it appears. The main story can be understood without having read the associated volumes, though the final scene is a head-scratcher. This story actually began as a potential Star Trek episode. (It's easy to see how it would have translated.)

In "The Ninth of Av," a future civilization prepares for transition to a posthuman state. It speculates that even in the year 3000, Jews will still be victims of ethnic cleansing, but it is vague about it. I have no idea what the Scott expedition had to do with any of it.

"On K2 with Kanakaredes" has a trio of mountain climbers accompanying an alien (whose race has settled on Earth) up that most dangerous of mountains, in exchange for a trip to an even more glorious challenge.

In "The End of Gravity," a writer travels to Russia to learn about its space program and makes a personal connection with a female would-be cosmonaut frustrated by her culture's gender biases. Another touching and poetic story.

Worth reading for the first and last pieces, especially.

3 of the 5 stories are decent. The K2 climb, the Hyperion, and the Ilium reference stories, with the K2 story being the best of the bunch. The other two are throwaway.

'Looking for Kelly Dahl' and 'On K2 with Kanakeredes' were the collections standouts. The first gave me Firewatch-vibes.

An interesting collection of speculative science-fiction tales from my favorite science-fiction writer. While I think Simmon's ability to end these tales was a little bit lacking, the build-up and adventure within each story was great, as always. Being able to reconnect with both the Hyperion/Endimion universe, as well as that of Ilium/Olympos was an unexpected, but pleasant, surprise as well. As Simmons' third offering of short fiction (following 1990's Prayers to Broken Stones and Lovedeath from 1993) Worlds Enough and Time is a refreshing and enjoyable read for all fans of the writer's work.

Happy with the collection of novellas, but I can't say I understood everything. Some readers have said its best to be familiar with Simmons's other writing to understand the references he makes in these stories so I hope to revisit them when I've read more of his work. I found the entire collection enjoyable which can be rare for short story collections.

Good stuff. I really like just about everything that Dan Simmons writes. And this is a nice book to tide me over until his next full length. He revisits characters from the Hyperion universe in one of the stories, but the rest are all new.

The introductions to the stories, almost as long as the stories themselves, was the most interesting part for me...

Řešení vážných osobních sporů a životních problémů (sociální drama o sporu učitele a žačky promíchaná s rodinnou tragédií a sebevraždou) vzájemným naháněním dvou lidí v opuštěném světě, který putuje časem i prostorem...

Sirotci ze Šroubovice: Nejlepší povídka knihy. Je to originální, zábavné a pěkně to doplňuje svět Hyperionu. Simmons, jak ho mám rád... Krásný mix Straty a Hyperionu.
