This is a phenomenal book. I've read this about 3 times. It has completely opened my mind about how religion works in the world. Karen Armstrong uses mind-numbing details to make her case as how the Bible became written and how we are to regard it. At the same time, we can have a personal relationship with that Being we call God. Religion is something purely human-made about a phenomena that is undeniable--God exists and He can exist purely for the benefit of the individual, however he or she defines God. This book is not for the light reader. It demands much attention and several rereads. I suggest reading the book quickly through first, to understand what the author is saying. Then concentrate on each chapter as a separate entity. Don't worry about understanding further chapters until earlier chapters are understood. I've underlined the original book until there was hardly a bare page in the earlier part of the book. I consider this one of my all-time favorite books. It is about time for another read.

An essential text on the history of the three religions.

I cannot really recommend this book, only because the author struggles with the enormous weight of the subject and simply tries to cover too much and ends up short-changing most ideas ... there were parts that were illuminating and interesting, but most of the text was cumbersome ..

.. additionally, if the author had been half as critical of her own assumptions as she was of others, it would have been a very different, and much better book.

Simdi kitabin başlangıcı tam tahmin edilebilir gibi; eski mitlerden alıntılar ve Yunan mitolojisinde adı geçen Tanrılar ve ilişkileri. Evet, Tanrı kavramı olarak düşünülmüş korkulan objeler olsalarda kişilik atfedilmesi ve rekabet halinde olmalariyla gerçekçi ve güvenilir bir başlangıç olmadi. Çünkü dünya geneline baktığınızda Tanrı kavramı birseyleri verip güzellikler yaratmış ya da ceza vererek ödüllendirmek gibi bir fikir ideali uzerinde sıkışmış. Zeus'un şimşeği ne kadar korkutucu gorunuyor diye düşünülebilir ama din olarak baktığınızda hiçbir şey vermemiş sadece can sıkıntısından,insanları yaratıp izleyip zevk alan Tanrilarmis gibi görünüyorlar.

Tek Tanrı inancı ve sonra tapinilan objeleri deginilmis. Buralarda söyleyecek bir sözüm yok genel olarak normal bir şekilde ifade edilmişti.

Hristiyanlık ve Teslis düşüncesine gelince.. Zaten kitapta da belirtildiği gibi İznik kongresinde insanların sunduğu, oyladigi ve kabul ettiği gerçeklerden nasil bir din olabilir ki? Sonuçta din dediğimiz şeyin bize yüce bir güç tarafından emredilen bildiriler olduğu düşünülürse ve Yunan mitolojisinde gecen hiçbir şey ona uymuyorsa nasil bu hale getirilebilir anlayamadım gerçekten. Hristiyanlarin neden bu hale geldiğini anlayabiliyorum; baskıcı bir şekilde hatta yer yer vahsetle bir topluma doğruları öğretemezsiniz. Kaldı ki bir çocuğa bile bağırarak bir şeyler ogretilemeyecegi düşünüldüğünde kendi kendilerini bile isteye yoketmis görünüyorlar. Ayrıca bazı din adamlarının yaptıkları ve dinde oyle olmamasına rağmen kendilerine yaptıkları yasaklamaya, getirilen paganik yenilikler zaten azıcık kalan ruhunuda yitirmesine sagliyor Hristiyanlıgin ve Hristiyanlarin.

İslam bölümüyle bazı doğrular olsa da ozellikle çarpık düşünceli bazı din dusunurlerini(kesinlikle hoca degil) yazdıkları ve düşündükleri Kur'an'la bağdaşır gibi tasvir etmesi, hep genel ozdeyislere ve bayağı durumlara takılması beni sıktı. Yani Tanrinin insana ait özellikler kullanması nasil bir sorun olabilir? Bu cok sildiler getirilmişti cok bunalttı...Yeri gelir cok güzel bir çiçek,hayvan ya da başka bir şey gördüğünüzde de 'şiir gibi' taninlamasi kullanınca onlari harf haline dönüştürmüyoruz. Ya da bir tablo gördüğünüzde mükemmel dediğinizde o tablo mükemmele yakın olsa da tam olarak değil. Sonuçta bir şekilde delinebilir cizilebilir kırılabilir ya da parcalabilir . Aynı Allah ve insan gibi. Allah yaratan olarak affettiği özellikler üzerinden dusunulenin aksine farklı ve anlam veremediğimiz bir Varlık olabilir. Bununla ilgili çok güzel bir şey okumuştum:"Birine vurduğunuz ya da sevdiğinizde bu onun acısının olmadığı ya da sevginizi hissetmediği için sizin sevginizin olmaması durumu değildir. Aciyida sevgiyide duyularla algilarsiniz. Bu görmediğiniz duymadığınız bir şeyin varolmadigi anlamına gelmez "

Filozofların tartışmaları ve mistiklerin öğretileri beni pek ilgilendirmiyor ama yinede ilgi çekici buldum ustinsan, üst varlık veya kendi bilinci ve bedenini Tanrisallastirmak diyebileceğim haller olması bana ilgi çekici geldi. Bunu suan tüketim, kolay zenginleşme, her şeyi elde etme isteği gibi insanı bayagilastiran düşüncelerle kendinden uzaklaştırmaya ittikleri insanların düşündüklerini sanmıyorum.

Ama genel olarak kitaba baktığımda en çok Yahudi Tanrısı ve dininin pek eleştiri almadığını, birçok eziyet ve badireler geciridigini; ayrıca İslam ve Hristiyanlık gibi dinlerden daha farklı düşüncede bir Yaratıcı fikri benimsedigini yazılması bana daha çok yanlı bir bakış açısı gibi geldi. Hz.Isa ve Aziz Pavlus gibilerinin yan yana konmasida Hz.Muhammed gibi bir şahsın sanki sadece kabileleri toplasın ve güçlü olsunlar diye kendi canından bile vazgeçerek herseyi göze alarak indirilen dini nakleden biriyken saltanat sürmemiş ve dahası kendi için hiçbir menfaat elde etmemiş biri için bence cok iğrenç cümleler içeriyor. Politik zekasına ve din konusundaki başarısına yapılan övgüler kabul edilebilir ama gel gelelim dini kendi uydurması gibi algilatilmasi cok kotu.

Sonuç olarak demek istediğim şu ki evet yine diyorum doğru birkaç noktaya parmak basılmış Turkiyede sapka kanunu çıktığında bile psikolojik olarak insanların etkielenbildigi yazilmisken dinlerle ilgili birçok bilgi aktarilirken( bu arada bu sadece acik olarak Hristiyanlık için örtülü şekilde yahudillik için ve hiçbir şekilde İslam için uygulanmamisken) bunların doğru olması benim en geçerli kriterim olmadi. Bir çarşafı bir ucundan çekip her yerini gördüm dememeli. O yüzdende içerdiği bazı doğrular ve ilginc bazı bakış açıları verdiği için bu yıldızı aldı. Yoksa benim için ilk defa bir kitabi okumak vakit kaybı oldu diyebilirim

Astounding, abstruse and a little bit arid. Karen Armstrong in her book went through three Abrahamic religions as well as Buddhism and Hinduism.
Perhaps her atheism helped to make a vibrant look to those religions and explain comparative history without a bias. It is worth to note that her valueable research is quite interesting, albeit in some parts it burst out some misunderstandings due to complex philosophical statements.

Nevertheless, "History of God" is for people who are familiar with philosophy and religions. An avarage person who is just a believer may find it complex to get some points. For example, Karen Armstrong could not clearly explain why it was necessary to address to rationalistic view or creating the world from ex nihilo. Furthermore, she skipped some major moments in Christian history. For those who are not familiar with Christianity, it would be interesting to read about an origin and history of this religion.

However, her excelleblnt analysis and description on Islam was impressive. I would like to hope that most of the Wastern people start properly understand Eastern religions such as Islam and Judaism.

As an orthodox, Evangelical Protestant, I was unnerved by Armstrong's treatment of Monotheism as a religion, which makes Judaism, Christianity and Islam something like its three major denominations. That offends the believers of all three religions! Nonetheless, it was a helpful way to allow each group to see how the same major philosophical premises have encouraged similar developments in each religious community. Each have Charismatics, for example. Each have contemplatives. Each have intellectual structures by which the faith and its implications are described and applied to 'secular' subjects. In short: this is a valuable book, especially for believers, even if they find themselves disagreeing on every page. It helps us understand one another better and especially helps believers understand the way secularly minded people view religion.

Objective but rather boring.

Interesting view of a former nun studying the evolution of God throughout time.

The evolution of God from the mystics to the god of the rationalist and mechanical viewpoint. Our modern God is one Newton invented.

The book itself is a tab bit too short in my opinion. Karen Armstrong's writing isn't the best I found.

There is a huge interplay between muslims, jews and Christian, I learned. Religion comes and goes and returns. Credere means believing, but also trusting.

Overall, this book has further increased my curiosity to other places.

If you ever desire to read a shallow and deceptive (yet clever) apology for Islam, this is your book and Karen Armstrong is your author. It is well written. Read it casually and you are likely to agree with the author's hand waving. For example, the specific and limited in scope historic violence in the Old Testament is repeatedly equated with the Koran's ongoing directive to kill and subdue infidels. Ms. Armstrong, apparently a former Catholic nun, seems to no longer believe in God at all, especially the Judeo- Christian God, and so she seems to have found herself free to compare the various "myths" that are the world's major religions in a feel-good best seller. This is an old book. The damage is largely done, but anyone looking to read it for insight into the world's major religion's would be well-advised to read it carefully or not at all.

Thorough. Incredible read. A must read for anyone interested in the history of ideas or the history of religion

The most comprehensive, exhaustive, and fascinating study of the Abrahamic religions and how they have changed over a few thousand years. Of definite interest to both religious and non-religious folks. Absolutely fascinating, but be warned: it is very dense, well-documented and cited, and reads much like a textbook (though a very engaging one). Over 100 pages of endnotes, a glossary, extensive bibliography with annotations for further reading, and fortunately, copious amounts of space in the front and back of the book for microscopic notes on topics of interest. Brilliant, thought-provoking, prescient, and challenging.

I usually enjoy reading about religion and religious history, because I find it fascinating, but this was such a struggle for me. She explained and explored a lot of lofty religious concepts, which got repetitive and tedious. These religious debates were annoying, because they often focused on minute details, and sprang COMPLETELY from the mind of the philosophers' imagination, and obviously not from any evidence or any provable assertions at all. And yet many people were killed over these debates. Which has nothing to do with the author, of course; I guess I just found the subject matter of religious thought very tedious. That'll be the last time I read about theologians' ideas about god, because I find what they do to be a complete waste of time. Though a quote on the back of the book described it as very readable, I couldn't disagree more.
