tThe book Heat by Mike Lupica is a great book. Michael the main character is a great baseball player on a good team. They are number one in the conference and they are going to the little league world series. Other teams don’t believe that he’s young enough to participate because he is so good. The problem is he doesn’t have a birth certificate to prove it and he can not get one. His parents both died and he is living with his older brother who is under the age of 18. Nobody knows that Michael is living with just his brother and if people find out they could be separated from each other.
tI really liked this book. I think the author did great with the situation that Michael has to deal with and really did well showing the characters personalities. Through out the book I could easily vision what was happening and for me that doesn’t happen often when I am reading. I think this book was really good and I would read it again if I couldn’t find anything new to read.
tHeat is an amazing book and I would rate this a 10 out of 10. I really hate reading and for me to give a book a 10 out of 10 is really good. I like the characters and how Mike Lupica wrote out the story. It’s a good book to read for many age groups. I like how its about sports and has the drama of him trying to find a way to continue with his teams.

Hello my name is Giuseppe Mattera,
I think that the author wrote this book for many reasons, one of the reasons is to get people to work for their dreams. Because in the book the author tells us that Michael, his father, and brother sneak into the United States to look for new opportunities. The family moves to New York city in search for jobs. A few months after they move to the big city Michael's father dies. They face many problems in the United States. Michael's brother works many jobs just to provide from him and his brother. In Cuba Michael was one of the hardest throwing pitchers in the area. Michael always had a dream to play in the little league world series. While he is reaching for his goal he runs into a huge problem, one of his opponents asks to see his birth certificate because they do not believe that he is 12 years old. The reason they cannot find his birth certificate is because his father was the only one who knew where they were.

I think the theme of the story is poverty. In the story it tells us that Michael and his family move to America with little or no money at all. When his father died him and his brother did not know what to do. Michael's older brother went in search for jobs while Michael stayed home and practiced baseball. I think that the author made this the theme because 45% of the world lives in poverty everyday. Another reason why I think he made this the theme is because he is trying to show people just how hard it is to work two jobs and be an illegal immigrant. Michael and his brother have barely enough money to survive.
Michael's brother at the age of 17 is trying to keep their dads death a secret because if people know the kids will go in foster care. They are trying to wait till his brother turns 18 so that he can legally take care of his brother.

The style of this book is first person, the author is very descriptive about everything in this story. He points out a lot of details and he tells us what the people in the story look like and how they act. The way he wrote the book made me understand it a lot better and it made it a lot easier to read. The author made this book easy to understand because he was trying to get a point out to the readers. In the beginning of the story the author described a lot of things and then he would use them later in the story so he was for shadowing. The book is meant for people that like and play the sport not for people that do not like it. This book gives a lot of life lessons that people can learn from.

Personally I thought that this was one of the best books I've ever read. I loved the way that the author describes things and how smoothly the story flew along. I also felt that there was a lot of action and it really gripped your attention. The only part that could have been improved is how fast the plot changes. In one part of the story it tells us that he wasn't doing very good and he was sitting on the bench and then before you know it he was the best player on the team. This book was very similar to the last book I read the Big Field. In both of these books the author likes to describe things in the beginning and then talk about them later in the story. I read this book because i am a huge baseball fan and I would recommend this book to any one that is interested in baseball.

I wouldn't consider myself much of a reader. In fact, I hardly ever read at all unless it is a school related assignment. Over time I became uninterested in reading, as I just didn't have a very good time with books. Though one thing I typically do have fun with is sports, which is what drew my attention to this book which I can say I did actually have a pretty good time with.

Michael Arroyo is a twelve year old Cuban immigrant who is now living in the Bronx who is extremely talented at baseball. Carlos, Michael’s brother, and Michael are living in New York and have to try and keep that a secret until Carlos turns eighteen and can take legal custody of Michael. Michael as I mentioned earlier is extremely talented at pitching and dreams of playing in the Little League World Series. Michael team was doing very well that season and it did look promising but that dream was nearly crushed when multiple oppenent coaches asked for Michael’s birth certificate which, unfortunately, the Arroyo brothers could not get a hold of. This means if Michael wants his trip to the Little League World Series, he is going to have to try his best to keep the dream alive for him and his team.

I can say I more so liked this book than disliked it, as it has a really gripping story, kept me wanting to know more. I especially liked how Lupica portrayed the intensity of the games, as it was hard to stop reading until the game was over with. I also thought seeing how Michael and his brother were so close and in sync so much, even though they are trying to make a family after losing their dad.

Me personally, didn't have a problem with anything about the book. One thing I would expect other readers to have a problem with is that this book would be very hard to understand at certain points to someone who doesn't know a whole lot about baseball. This is because games and other baseball references are frequently seen throughout the story and would make it pretty frustrating to read without that prior knowledge.

If that is not the case and you do like Baseball, then I would give this book a try.

Personal response: I really did not like the book "Heat," by Mike Lupica, because it did not keep my attention throughout the book. I enjoyed reading the baseball scenes of the book, but I could not relate to the characters.

Plot: Michael Arroyo was very good thirteen year old pitcher. His only family was his seventeen year old brother. His dad helped the boys escape from Cuba and died soon after they arrived in the United States. The boys had been avoiding bills and phone calls. One day Michael stopped a thief from stealing a lady's purse. This brought attention to Michael and his family. The birth certificates were in Cuba so, he had no way of proving his age. Michael got to meet his idol, El Grande, he came to his last game with his birth certificate and Michael was able to play his last game.

Characterization: Michael was the main character in this book and he loved to play baseball. He was the best one on the team and even the best in the league. Michael was all for supporting his team and making sure they win. Even when Michael could not play he still cheered on his teammates and helped them to victory. Michael was a very supportive, competitive, and caring young boy.

Impacts of setting: The setting takes place in today's time, on the baseball fields of New York. Baseball had been around for a long time and it had not changed much. If the book would have taken place in a different city or time period it would not have been much different.

Thematic connection: The theme that stood out to me in this book was never to give up. Even when Michael had no hope to finish the season with his team he found a way. He made an effort to make things work and sometimes that all it takes.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to boy’s high school. I think this book was gender specific just because of all of the baseball and characters in the book. It took a while to read and did not keep my interest very well so I would not recommend this book to my friends.

A wonderful book with a very good theme at the end that keep you clued in the whole book, I would recommend this book to just about anyone that can read books! The book is about a boy named Micheal Arroyo and his brother Carlos... they lost his father a few months back. He has to lie and survive against a Child Services man named Mr. Gibbs which was an antagonist throughout almost the entirety of the book until the end where he turn into a good guy and helps them, all of which causing a very beautiful ending with many different themes. This may be one of the best books I've ever read but I couldn't say my favorite because the book is just too short for what I wanted to see in the end! Lol!

Heat, by Mike Lupica, is a sports novel about baseball. It covers the life of Micheal Aroyyo, a Cuban orphan. It takes place in South Bronx, in the shadows of Yankee Stadium. Micheals lives with his brother and struggles financially. The main conflict is that he has no immigration papers, and is constantly hiding.
“Michael still thought of Havana as home, because he was born there. And he had been Miguel Arroya there. Here, he was Michael.” The writing was very easy to understand, and I was entertained because the book is about baseball and baseball is my favorite sport. I think Lupica is exploring how hard it is for immigrants without papers to live in this country. It also taught me the reality of lower-income communities. I would recommend this to anyone who has somewhat of an interest in baseball. However, if you don't, the book has a lot more meaning then just a kid playing baseball in the Bronx.

Heat is about a 12 year old boy named Michael Arroyo. He immigrated to New York with his dad and older brother from Cuba. He is a great pitcher and has a great arm. He runs into a dilemma because he needs the proof he is 12 and his birth certificate is back in Cuba.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes baseball. It is about the things that kids go through when joining teams and not being liked.

Michael and Carlos Arroyo are brothers keeping an important secret. When that secret is blown wide open, Michael’s promising future in baseball is threatened and his life with his brother may change forever.

Heat is a book about baseball, family, and survival.

But, mostly, it’s a book about baseball. And I might be the only person to ever read this book about baseball who knows so little about the sport that I actually had to look on Wikipedia to find out what a grounder is.

The characters in this book are wonderful! Michael and Carlos are sincere and likeable, but it’s Michael’s best friend Manny who steals the show. He is hilarious!

“The first thing Michael saw when he opened his eyes was the worried face of Manny Cabrera, close enough to Michael that he could smell the Orbit Bubblemint gum his friend was constantly chomping on.

“I know you think this is what heaven will look like,” Manny said. “But, you’re not dead.”

The book is also inspiring. It’s the perfect story for the next blockbuster movie! Just like Rudy or The Blind Side, Heat will bring tears to your eyes and have you rooting for the main character right from the start. So, Hollywood, take notice.

This book managed to dredge up affection in me for a game I know nothing about. Before reading this book, I couldn’t have told you how many innings there are in a baseball game. Now, I can appreciate baseballs all-American appeal. I have a fondness for the sport that did not exist in any fiber of my being before. Now, will I sit down and watch a baseball game? Probably not. But I would definitely recommend this book to any reader, not just baseball fans.

The book Heat is about a boy named Michael and his Journey. Michael was a normal boy living in New York City, but he really wasn't normal his dad had died and he had been living in New York City illegally. They came from Havana on a boat. But Papi couldn't come because people would catch on to them. He and his older brother Carlos had been trying to lay low until Carlos had turned 18 at the end of September. Towards the middle of the book Michael and Carlos were having some problems like Carlos had to scalp tickets just to get money for him and Michael. Michael was an amazing baseball player. but they were able to eat because Mrs Cora "Mrs C" helped them with some stuff she said she would adopt them as her's but she didn't have her papers. Towards the end of the book coaches from teams thought that Michael was to old to play so they said he needed a Birth Certificate. The only bad thing was that they couldn't get because it would have been in Havana. But his favorite player El Grande from the Yankees got him his birth certificate.
