The 1st book in the Freddie Montgomery trilogy by John Banville and I won't be reading books 2 & 3.
I started this book with hesitation due to the mixed reviews on Goodreads where readers either loved it or hated it and I am sorry to say I didn't enjoy it very much at all. Not one to quit I trundled on thinking it will all start to make sense and improve but for me it got no better and I was glad to finish it.

L'autore scrive davvero bene a mio avviso e questo mi piace. Anche la struttura del romanzo: il racconto in prima persona della vita ante e post questo fatto violento che ha portato il protagonista in carcere da cui rilascia questa sua confessione e spiegazione dei fatti. Approfondita l'analisi del protagonista, belle le descrizioni e alcuni picchi di lirismo notevoli, ma questi mi hanno sorretto fino a metà libro poco più, poi mi sono affaticato e non è stato agevole arrivare in fondo. E poi, sarà che sono scemo, ma io non ho capito il motivo del suo atto criminale... un atto che si è compiuto da sè, non c'erano alternative... l'ha fatto perchè lo doveva fare... perchè non c'era altro da fare... mah...
Diciamo che il mio parere sono 1,5* stelle che con lo stile e l'analisi psicologica arriva a 3*, ma non mi ha convito, proverò forse con una seconda chanche da dare al suo "Il Mare".

Riveting! A superb portrait of a narcissistic sociopath. The leading character is totally without conscience but utterly fascinating as you are drawn into the workings of his mind. A spellbinding experience. I've read two of John Banville's previous works and am convinced he just keeps getting better.
