I pulled this off of my shelves randomly a few weeks ago. I have previously read Adventures of SH, but as this contains the memoirs & Hound of the Baskervilles I have been making my way through it over the past few weeks. It's been wonderful revisiting 221B Baker Street. Sherlock has always been a comfort read for me. Also, Hound etc feels like a gothic masterpiece that subverted audience expectations.

“It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.”

I’ve had this collections of short stories sitting on my shelf for the longest time. I initially bought it for a high school project years ago and after writing my report on one of the short stories I never had the desire to revisit this book. The size of this book intimidated me. After rewatching the TV version of the Sherlock Holmes series I was suddenly in the mood for more Sherlock Holmes. This was the perfect book to read during the fall season. The writing of this author is so detailed that it makes it so easy for the reader to become emersed in this story. The subtle clues and the mysterious form of events described had you trying to solve the mystery right along with Holmes. Often times the result of the case left you dumbstruck right along with Watson. The well flushed out characters had you becoming attached to their stories and in awe of their capabilities. Loved reading this book.

I highly recommend the audiobook.

I am completely in love with Conan Doyle's work and am embarrassed that I never thought to pick up Sherlock before. I felt like I was reading a script for CSI: Miami but set in the late 19th century and much purer. After I started understanding the author's methods of crafting a mystery and Holmes' methods of deducing the culprit, I began forming my own theories which proved to be accurate enough to make me pat myself on the back but false enough to still leave me breathless with wonder at his ingenuity. Conan Doyle is a master and I am a new enthusiast. Can't wait to get my hands on Volume II.

Awesome! I'm glad I haven't watched any of the many Sherlock movies or television shows because I can already see how Doyle's Sherlock is different. I can't recommend this enough. :)

This book was a joy to read. Its excellence endures over time, not fading in the slightest, surely as enjoyable and interesting today as it was to the readers of The Strand magazine in the United Kingdom from the late 19th century to the early years of the 20th. It is no wonder why Sherlock Holmes has been such a cultural icon, a paragon of detective fiction. Even those who haven't read Sherlock Holmes are surely familiar with him, so wide is his influence and so long his shadow. Each of Doyle's tales of the various adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his companion John H. Watson is wholly unique and interesting, with Holmes's brilliant use of deductive reasoning and logic to solve cases a constant cause of awe for readers.
This vast collection of stories and novels makes it difficult to pick a favorite, but I particularly enjoyed "Silver Blaze" and "The Sign of Four." None of the stories are lacking in quality, though, and it was a pleasure to read each and every one. The introduction and footnotes by Kyle Freeman were an enormously helpful addition to the stories, helping clarify points of uncertainty and enhancing my understanding of the writing. I would recommend this book particularly to those enamored by the genre of mystery. Regardless of any preference, this book is a compelling, entertaining read for anyone.

I had never read this, and I really loved it. The stories were just perfect length to read one and finish before bed. A comforting, old-fashioned style. I realized so many thoughts and images originated here! The hounds baying on a foggy moor, the idea of paying attention to details and knowing how many stairs you have taken, etc., etc. Anyway, really enjoyed it and will get to Volume II.

I'm not generally a fan of mystery as a genre, but there is just something about Sherlock Holmes that is so interesting and fun. I think it helps that most of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries are short, often taking around an hour to read, and feeling much like watching an episode of a TV show. This is perfect for me, as I just don't have the attention span (for mysteries) to stay engaged for several hundred pages of mystery. Out of all the passages in this collection, I enjoyed the stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes the most. I also want to mention that I alternated between reading this collection and listening to the audiobook narrated by Stephen Fry. The audiobook is fantastic, and I do recommend it! I've also been watching some episodes of the Sherlock tv show as I've been reading this, and I've been loving it as well. I will say that I prefer the Sherlock version of Watson, played by Martin Freeman, to the Watson of the original stories. While I don't mind Conan Doyle's Watson, I love how skeptical TV Watson often is of Sherlock (even after seeing him succeed time after time) and how he's not afraid to bring Sherlock down a peg when he needs to. Conan Doyle's Watson, in contrast, constantly raves about Holmes's superior intelligence to a point that feels a bit too much like hero worship. Overall,I am enjoying the experience of taking in the story of Sherlock in all forms, and I'm excited to move on to the next book and the next season of Sherlock!

Wouldn't you know it, aside from Hound of the Baskervilles (the least Sherlockian Sherlock Holmes story), I had never read any Sherlock Holmes. My knowledge came from pop culture reincarnations. So, I finally sat down to read the real deal... And I was NOT disappointed

I read this due to being a fan of so many spin offs from movies, shows, and even anime. I wanted to read the actual Sherlock Holmes stories to be able to compare and see if any research was put into those various screen entertainments. It’s a difficult read due to the time period it was all written but also the language and terminology. If it wasn’t for the book notes printed at the bottoms with the pages I never would have understood a word. Long, slow read though. Not terrible though.

When I was a kid I read a kid-friendly version of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” and loved it. When I saw this lovely hardcover collection of Holmes’ adventures at Barnes and Noble, I picked it up and then it got pushed back on my “To Read” list. Finally decided to start it this year and I couldn’t put it down. Doyle had a way of writing fascinating mysteries that weren’t too confusing to follow. Now I see why Sherlock Holmes is so famous. Excellent stories!

It's hard not to come to Sherlock Holmes fresh, and I have to admit to preferring the most recent TV adaptation. Naturally it is a classic which has shaped our culture, and perhaps I am being swayed by the fact that my edition was in such very tiny type (replicated newspaper columns). In the big bookshelf clear out, it is clearing out.
