I really enjoyed this book. It is Sherlock Holmes but from a new perspective. Too bad the series isn't going to be continued.

The title of this book is actually, "Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars"...book 1. It is a Sherlock Holmes mystery, but really is focused around several homeless boys and how they help Holmes solve a crime.

Ok, where do I start....

The lost boys idea was promising, but for some reason only 3 had a little bit of character development. I really can’t understand why would you create a gang with 12 kids if you’re only going to say their names.

Sherlock Holmes is a scum bag. It’s ok when he’s a scum bag with adults, as in the original books, but he’s like that with kids. I mean, they literally eat RATS when they’re not working for him. There’s got to be something wrong with this dynamic. The least he could do, since he’s employing illegal kids, is provide for them, right?

WHY AREN’T THERE ANY LOST GIRLS? It’s victorian England, but I’m sure there must’ve been SOME orphan girls during this time.

Pilar is way better than everyone else in this book, including Sherlock Holmes. She has some creepy gipsy powers who were never developed and outmatches everyone and everything. Still, underdeveloped, I’m sorry to say.

Before I continue, I’m aware this is a series, so I’m not going to comment the unfinished plot about Ozzie’s father, but I’m still going to question WHY, in a 2006 book co-written by a woman, I had to read this sentence:

“Holmes smiled at Pilar. ‘Your confidence and ability make you and asset on any surveillance. I have never found so useful a person of your sex.’”

AND THE WORST PART IS THAT SHE TRIED TO CONCEAL HER HAPPINESS. The icing on this cake is that Holmes calls her “señorita”, because she is from hispanic descent. I mean.... what the fuck? People were terrible to women in victorian England, but you really didn’t have to make it that way in your children’s book. Tomorrow is international women’s day, people, I did not deserve that right now.

To finish this amazing review I add that, after the 4 boys (not the 12) and Pilar solve all this shit by themselves, Holmes gives them some cash, tells Ozzie that the man who gave him shelter (a horrible man, but still, shelter) was arrested and now he would be a happy homeless that would work for him for some coins once in a while and eat some rats! Yay!!! Happy endings, guys!!!!

I enjoyed this book so much the first time I read it that I immediately turned to the front page and read the entire thing again. I have long been a Sherlock Holmes fan, and this felt true to the time, as well as being an interesting mystery.

That was back in 2011, though, and ten years later, I'm not quite as fond of it. Still a good book and a good mystery, but the author is clearly not keen on Watson, and as Watson is my favourite, I'm docking a star.

Wiggins to moja miłość z oryginalnych książek (do spółki oczywiście z najpoczciwszym doktorem i jednym z błyskotliwszych inspektorów Scotland Yardu – Anthonym Hopkinsem), więc oczywiście nie mogło go tu zabraknąć. Ozzie, holmesowy pupilek przez swój całkiem nieźle kminiący móżdżek też mi się podoba :D

I love Sherlock Holmes and am always excited to find a new series that showcases the great detective in some way. This is geared toward young readers and focuses on the homeless band of boys known as the Baker Street Irregulars that Holmes sometimes used to help him solve cases. This book introduces the boys and little of how each came to live in an abandoned carraige factory.

"of the great Sherlock Holmes know that the great sleuth frequently called upon the Baker Street Irregulars, a motley gang of homeless boys, to assist him in his investigations. In this new series, these ragamuffin helpers move to the forefront, solving cases with their own street smarts. In this first installment, the Irregulars help Holmes track down leads in a case that involves murder, espionage, a royal treasure, acrobats, and archenemies."

A well written series for ages 9-12 that will never be appreciated by that age group. For one thing, the language is more complicated than the popular Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries and Middle School series. Another thing, there's a lot more depth involved here. And the other thing is, the first couple of chapters start out a little slow, whereas you learn more about the characters that make up "The Baker Street Irregulars". When compared with the more popular series I mentioned, I'm not sure if it can hold the interest long enough for the kid to get truly involved in the story. I think it's a shame because not only is there so much more depth in this series of only three books. It's also a history lesson as well as a good way for a kid to "cut his/her teeth" on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, especially if one is concerned about their kid reading about Holmes' drug habit at too young of an age. (I'm happy to report that isn't in there at all.) The last book in this series was published four years ago, so I'm not hopeful that this one will continue. But at least there are three truly great books. There are even translations in the back for the slang used in the book, as well as descriptions for the different types of carriages that were referred to in the story.

Remember Sherlock Holmes Baker Street Irregulars? This series is about those young boys, orphans living on the streets of London, who are Holmes' eyes and ears, helping him solve crimes.
A good premise, and a good read for a young boy. Themes of friendship, loyalty.
Nancy Springer's series staring Sherlock's younger sister Enola Holmes is somewhat better written, but she's written hundreds of books...
