I read this book many years ago and as it was recommended to me I wanted to read it again, I liked it very much and I like how Sherlock always repeats: "you see, but you do not observe"; infact most of the time it's what happens to many people.
Arthur Conan Doyle used to say: "The love of books is among the choicest gifts of the gods", it is absolutely true. If you are in company with a good book you are never alone and I am always with a book!!

Mi primer acercamiento al mundo literario de Sherlock Holmes, y ha conseguido engancharme para leer más.
Algunos relatos son mejores que otros, pero en general es muy bueno.

My first approach to the literary world of Sherlock Holmes, and it got me hook to read more.
Some stories are better than others, but overall it's very good.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes were the first Sherlock Holmes stories I ever read. I fell in love with the style and atmosphere of these stories, eight or so years ago, and never bothered to re-read until now. Having re-read, I see that there are key elements of the stories which slipped past my younger self.

For instance, the fact that - for his time - Arthur Conan Doyle wrote in ways that were a touch more shocking. To us, he may still seem very dated, his moral codes part of his era. Yet the fact that he even hints at and writes female characters with roles not always dependent upon marriage (that he has independent women characters) is important. Irene Addler and some of his other female characters are much stronger than the female characters written around the same kind of era - hence hinting to me that Doyle had a much more open and critical mind than many around him. But of course, how else could he have created some of the most compelling mystery plots of all? And how else could he have created such an analytical and rational detective?

Another issue that slipped past my younger self still are elements that appear to be dated. For instance the fact that assassins in one of the stories were the KKK (history has since changed their role for the worse). For another thing, that Holmes uses cocaine and also is seen in an opium den (whether he uses the drug is never clarified). Yet, I myself as a pre-teen, never realised that Holmes was using such drugs...

That all said, the mysteries presented inside these short stories remain compelling and intricate. Perhaps some are solved far too easily or conveniently, but the world of fog, tobacco smoke and violin playing which is so occupied by Sherlock Holmes and his faithful friend, John Watson, is one of fascination. For those characters alone you can read these stories, and for the artistic way in which Doyle - through Watson - depicts strange mysteries with some artistic prose.

So, after a more recent reading, I still recommend these stories. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, out of any author I have read, seems to grasp logic better than anyone. Both mathematical/scientific logic and deductive logic are offered as valuable and rare, rarer than any crime committed by human characters. Which all goes to suggest that it is easier to commit atrocities, but harder to solve them.

When you think Sherlock Homles have had enough adventures in his pocket, Arthur Conan Doyle proves you wrong. I'm glad I've grabbed this book, for the stories it carried were of great interest, simplicity and complexity at the same time!

Sherlock Holmes had met every type of criminal there could be, from beggars to impersonators to the last descendant of one of the oldest Saxon families in England; There also had to be animals involved, snakes, cheetah and dogs! I always give it to Holmes for going through whatever it takes for justice to be served! Respect!

Everything was well-written, beautifully described and extraordinarily put together. (I always pay attention to the writing as it has an impact upon me, which helps in deciding whether I like this book or not) Definitely deserves a spot in my Favorite Mystery Novels! ❤️

Here's my personal rating for each chapter:

A Scandal In Bohemia ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Red-Headed League ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A Case of Identity ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Boscombe Valley Mystery ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Five Orange Pips ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Adventure of The Blue Carbuncle ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Adventure of The speckled Band ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Adventure of The Engineer's Thumb ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sherlock Holmes is the best. The best fictional detective ever created. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has written 56 stories and 4 novels which are compiled in 9 books. From those 9 books, the best cases are in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. They are really the best. It contains most of the best cases of Sherlock Holmes. I loved it. And for beginners who is are thinking to try Sherlock Holmes, I highly recommend you to start with this then move to the The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes to The Return of Sherlock Holmes to The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes and at last to His Last Bow.

Ate these up as a teen. Especially liked The Hound of the Baskervilles. Saw his student’s desk he’d carved his name into up by Liverpool.

This was the first collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories that I read! I was quite surprised by how short each of the mysteries were, and how fast they flew by. But I did enjoy them. I loved seeing the deduction at work, and it was iconic finally reading about the duo. From the speech I could easily tell that the BBC casting for the series had been done so well. I felt like the endings were a bit too abrupt at times, and sometimes the stories felt quite short. I did like what characterisation I read, but I didn’t fall head over heels in love with either Holmes or Watson like I expected to. Loved the plots to the mysteries and the solving of them though!

My Sherlock Holmes readalong has landed me back among the short stories that have always been the best (and the bulk) of the Holmes universe.

I got off to a somewhat shady start with this volume. In part, I needed to remind myself that "adventures" isn't in the title for nothing; these stories are adventures more than they are mysteries. And indeed the introduction of this Oxford edition makes the argument that there is more than a touch of the fable or fairy tale in Sherlock Holmes.

Nonetheless, the first few stories aren't much. "A Scandal in Bohemia," though deeply beloved by many fans for the appearance of Irene Adler, the one woman to have bested Holmes, is... well, a very slight story. Poor Irene.

Anyway, there are a few other forgettable missives in the first half (although, fun fact, Arthur Conan Doyle started writing them in April, had four within a few weeks, and had decided to quit his medical practice to write by the end of May.

But the book really comes into its own in the second half, as Conan Doyle relaxes into his wonderful protagonists, and begins to develop some cleverer and more intriguing, and sometimes funnier plots. The atmosphere or Victorian London is so thick here you could cut it with a knife. "The Man with the Twisted Lip," with its opium dens and professional beggars. "The Blue Carbuncle," with its diamond stuffed inside a goose. "The Speckled Band," with its dastardly villain and his diabolical plan to murder his stepdaughter hatched in the tropics. "The Beryl Coronet," with its priceless jewellery and dysfunctional family dynamics. And my personal favourite, "The Copper Beeches," with its electric blue dresses, isolated governness and fierce dog.

Looking forward to meeting Holmes again, on the banks of the Reichenbach Falls next time.

A Scandal in Bohemia (3 stars) Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein, King of Bohemia is arranged to marry the daughter of the King of Scandinavia but he loves another girl. Irene Alder. Entertaining. Fast-paced. I love the disguises!

The Red-Headed League (3 stars) Mr. Jabez Wilson has an apprentice in his pawnshop whose name is Mr. Vincent Spaulding. One day, Spaulding recruits his boss to the association of people with red hair to copy encyclopedia, Very funny storyline. I love the twist!

A Case in Identity (3 stars)Mary Sutherland, a typist, who inherits riches from her uncle in New Zealand, wants to find the whereabouts of Mr. Hosmer Angel, her boyfriend. Hmm, I can’t believe that Mary does not have a hint about her uncle in disguise. It reminded me of Roschester disguising as a fortune teller in Jane Eyre. Still funny, though.

The Boscombe Valley Mystery (2 stars)James McCarthy is suspected to have murdered his father, Charles McCarthy. However, through Charles last words and striking the conscience, Holmes finds out the real killer. After the first three short stories, this one pales in comparison but still okay.

The Five Orange Pips (4 stars)Elias Openshaw hires his favorite nephew John Openshaw as his household manager. One days Elias receives an envelope containing five orange pips that are the traditional symbol of Ku Klux Khan, a post-Civil War American terrorist organization. This organization kills the supporter of African-American voting rights. My first fiction on K.K.K. and I loved it!

The Man With the Twisted Lip (1 star)Neville St. Clair is missing so his wife is looking for him. The last time she sees him is on top of the building staring down at her. When she goes up she sees the beggar Hugh Boone. All these disguises! All these disguises! Hannibal Lectern does it better by scraping the skin of his victim but make up? I dunno. In whatever angle I see my wife, near or far, I could spot her without any effort!

The Blue Carbuncle (3 stars)The Blue Carbuncle is a stolen jewel belonging to the Countess of Morcar. This is believed to be stolen by a hotel employee named James Ryder. It is found inside the throat of a goose that is goes together with a hat. Both of them are owned by a plumber named John Horner. Quite clever using the poor goose to swallow a diamond! I liked this one.

The Speckled Band (3 stars)Helen and Julia Stoner have a stepfather Dr. Grimesby Roylott who will get poor if any of them gets married. The reason is that the will of their mother has named Roylott as the trustee as long as either of them ties a knot. Roylott does everything to stop Julia’s wedding to Percy Armitage. The solution that Holmes used here is quite simpler but the flashback approach seemed to have differentiated this to the other stories.

The Engineer’s Thumb (2 stars)Victor Hatherley is a hydraulics engineer but has no job so when Colonel Lysander Stark approaches him for a task that will pay him a huge amount of money, he accepts. It’s just that he is not aware of the risks that go with it. I just had a hard time understanding what is the meaning of fullers but this story has lesser suspense that the others in my opinion.

The Noble Bachelor (2 stars)Lord St. Simon, son of the Duke of Balmoral, has a missing wife, Hatty Doran. The main suspect is another woman, Flora Miller, who tries to stop the wedding of the two. Another story regarding marital problem, the spouse ditching her partner. Quite similar to “Twisted Lips.”

The Beryl Coronet (3 stars) Lord St. is a senior partner of one of the biggest banks in London. One day, a customer asks for a big loan with Beryl Coronet, a golden crown with 39 beryls (a kind of gem) inset, as a collateral. Worried about the security, Lord St., brings the gem home and tells his son and niece about it. When Lord St., wakes up 3 beryls are already missing. Very good story. The twist is solid and the denouement is well-thought of.

The Copper Beeches (4 stars)Violet Hunter wants Holmes’ opinion whether she should be a governess or not of a family with peculiar demands, including to cut her hair, but the rate will be double. The funniest story in the whole collection. Reminds me that governess or housemaids should not be discounted as they could be as smart as anybody else.

Twelve short stories that prove how clever Sherlock Holmes is as a detective. They also show us the friendship between him and his lifelong partner, Watson. This friendship is almost like a bromance, it’s just that it is really platonic and based on mutual respect and admiration. No wonder my friend in our bookclub is crazy about Sherlock Holmes. I bet he dreams of finding not a bromance but a close friend who will stay by his side up to his twilight years on earth.
