Lots of recycled plots and characters, but still just plain ol' lovely LMM!

Have enjoyed reading a short story in this collection every night before bed. Sweet stories as usual. Except for the last one...very odd.

Because of my love of L.M. Montgomery's lesser known works, I started this book with high expectations. Maybe a little two high. The book wasn't necessarily bad, I just didn't think it could compete with some of Montgomery's other collections.
Did I like it? It was ok.
Would I reread it? Probably not.
Would I recommend it? Maybe for die-hard L.M. Montgomery fans. I wouldn't use this book to introduce new readers to the author.

4* Tales of the sea by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Like most of her short stories, there are happy endings but also haunting tales.

What. The. Fuuuuuuuuukkkkkk. A Tangled Web was one of my favorite LMM novels to read, until it was absolutely ruined by the final line, which is uncharacteristically racist and gross for her. Now here I am reading Along the Shore, and it’s my favorite of the short story collections, AND THE LAST STORY IS A VERSION OF THAT SAME FINAL CHAPTER! Alslfj ifkwkfjdjskwk. I’m so annoyed. LMM somehow managed to ruin two books with one sentence. The worst part is, she didn’t even put together this short story collection, so some editor made the *conscious decision* to include this story, and then doesn’t even mention anything about it. Ughhhhhhhhh so annoyed.

Another re-read (2022) and it's always a delight. Definitely a great study in Montgomery as she drew from more than one of these short stories to steal characters out for novels.

****

Any fan of L.M. Montgomery will delight in this collection of stories by the author of Anne of Green Gables. This particular collection of tales all carry a common theme throughout them which can be easily guessed at. If you love the seashore or stories about the PEI coastline and the characters than inhabit it, then this is the book for you. Classic, homey and truly Montgomery-esque, this makes for fun and cozy reading.

I remember how exciting it was to find an LMM book on the 'new' shelf at the library! So wonderful that two Montgomery scholars worked so hard to bring these to us!

I laughed and cried and thoroughly enjoyed these, although they got to feeling formulaic after a while. I do like Montgomery's writing.

A lovely read for any Montgomery fan. It isn't my favorite collection of hers but it is interesting to compare these earlier writings to her later ones. You can see the depth that she developed as a writer over the years. You can also see where the best of the stories ended up in her novels.

Yet another great book by the author of the Anne of Green Gables series! Here in this book are many short stories written by L. M. Montgomery, that were for various magazines of her time; amazingly enough if you've read the Anne of Green Gables stories, you'll likely reconize MANY of the short stories in this book, that helped create the series.
