The Magical Bond of the Sea
The story radiates love. It is magically describes the relationship between a woman and the ocean. It felt like Montgomery's soul is woven between the lines of the tale.

The Life Book Of Uncle Jesse
An absolutely heartwarming story. I love how uncle Jesse's tender, gentle and deep love for his lover was portrayed. The use of descriptions is lovely. The story is a sad one, yet it feels beautiful.

Mackereling out in the Gulf
One of the most tender, pure and beautiful portrayals of love I have ever encountered. This story is a definition of love; selfless, deep, gentle love. Not everything is about happy endings, and sometimes a sad ending will give out a message that could never be carried by a happy ever after.

Fair Exchange and No Robbery
An amusing, witty tale about two best friends falling in love with each others beaux. Highly amusing and very sweet.

Natty of Blue Point
A wondrous adventure tale, featuring young island boy who bravely rescues a boat of people from drowning, thus becomes a hero.

The Light on the Big Dipper
A sweet, brave little soul called Mary Margaret becomes the hero after saving people from drowning. I adored this little girl.

An Adventure on Island Rock
A heartwarming adventure story that shows the bond between a boy and a dog, where both end up saving someone and become heroes.

How Don was Saved
A lovely adventure story about a dog saving a boat of people. It is truly heartwarming.

A Soul That Was Not at Home
A lovable, dear child who has fancies and dreams as wide as the night sky, along with his love for nature, earth, and mostly the ocean makes this story very special. It is a great portrayal of Montgomery's bond with the ocean.

Four Winds
A mysterious young woman who has the blessing of belonging inside nature, captures the heart of a Minister, an engagement that can cause a scandal inside their small Canadian village which was brought to life by outstanding descriptions. While reading, I felt the misery of Lynde, and my hearth ached for Alan. I was so happy with the ending.

A Sandshore Wooing
An outstandingly amusing and lighthearted story about a stubborn young women and her witty courtship with a clever gentleman, who is also her beloved friend's brother. I truly enjoyed this story and found myself smiling while reading it.

The Unhappiness of Miss Farquhar
A realistic, clever tale about the process of healing from heartbreak and magic of helping another wrapped up in a valuable message. I absolutely adored the ending, it is truly unique to Montgomery.

The Waking of Helen
An outstanding story of a unhappy shore girl, who hears the calling of something else, and her tender friendship with a young gentlemen. As her feelings towards him grow more and more intense, he reveals that he merely sees her as a dear friend, which gives way to a shocking and rather dark ending. The story is very deep and dark.

A Strayed Allegiance
The engagement of two childhood friends who seem to love each other dearly, is in danger when the gentleman's heart gets stolen by a woman with eyes that has the sprite of wild inside of them. I admired his fiancee very much, for even though she was heartbroken, she still had the power to do what was best for both them and protect her dignity. She is truly a strong woman.

Young Si
A curious, little story about two lovers who's paths got separated after a chain of unfortunate events, yet their love for each other stayed strong as ever.

Overall, this collection of stories calls upon to the part of Montgomery's soul which she left along the shore, and captures it between the lines of the tales with outstandingly beautiful descriptions and lively characters.

Lovely to read more LM Montgomery after awhile and be back along the shore of PEI. It was also interesting to read about characters that felt strangely familiar in recycled plot lines that clearly made their way into her novels. Overall not my favorite, but made me happy and nostalgic.

Same review for all of these books - I loved LM Montgomery's short story collections as a young girl. I read several of them :)

This is a great book, filled with short stories, written by the author of Anne of Green Gables. It's a great add to any girls' collection.

I read the 1989 edited version (I forget who it was edited by)... the last two paragraphs of "A House Divided" should have been edited out... Otherwise, a perfect collection of shore-side short stories.

There are some good stories in this collection, but unfortunately there is a higher proportion of lackluster ones compared to some of the other LMM short story collections. A couple of the stories have their plots repeated very closely in another story("An Adventure on Island Rock" vs. "How Don Was Saved", and "The Magical Bond of the Sea" vs. "A Soul That Was Not at Home"). I imagine these are probably cases of LMM just needing to churn out a story quickly to meet a deadline. Luckily there are still tales here worth rereading:
-The Life-Book of Uncle Jesse
-Fair Exchange and No Robbery
-How Don Was Saved
-Four Winds
-The Waking of Helen
-The Unhappiness of Miss Farquhar

The stories are well-written, and I wished that some of them could go on longer. Some of the personalities and settings would be familiar to someone who has read more of Montgomery's works, but they were well done.

This is a good book for taking on a vacation or if you have a lot of interruptions. It is a collection of short stories. They are all filled with the charm you expect from LM Mongomery. The only one I did not like was the last story, 'A House Divided Against Itself'. It had racial slurs in it. You can skip that one.
