1.5 stars. Gummies were involved in this questionable decision, and I'm not talking about the kind of gummies from the candy aisle. Somehow I ended up reading this curled up on a couch with a pet ferret and cat for company while at a friend's house.

Divorced Mary Sue female character meets divorced Mary Sue male character and a romance blossoms only for a tragic event to happen. It's true to the Nicholas Sparks formula only this one was extra bland and had some completely pointless characters.

This book is a quick read (easily read in one sitting) with a great message driven home clearly, poetically and effectively.

While I understand that Nicholas Sparks gets glowing reviews about how touching and beautiful his sensitivity to romance is, what I actually found more remarkable about this book were the characters themselves. There were two main characters: A man and a woman. It was my experience that the man was the stronger of the two characters and the woman served as a witness to this person who quickly becomes an inspiration to the reader. I read this book wondering if his character would be consistent or surprise me. I knew that either way I wouldn't be disappointed and I wasn't in the slightest.

Another thing about Nicholas Spark's book, Nights in Rodanthe, that sticks out for me is that while primarily a romance, the book's message was not so much linked to romantic love as it was words of encouragement to be the best person you can be.

And that is all I can say without spoilery.

Well shit, this book broke me. I cried so much while reading Nights in Rodanthe it isn't even funny. I don't even have any wine to help me cope with this book.. and I need to fix that situation ASAP.

I feel like I need to stop forgetting what Nicholas Sparks can do to my heart. Please stop torturing my heart sir!

Okay, so Nights in Rodanthe definitely made me cry and fall in love with Adrienne and Paul. God, their love was so real and unique. It was hard not falling in love with them. From the moment they first met at the Inn, I starting shipping the hell out of them. Then when they finally acknowledge their feelings for each other I was giddy AF people. HOWEVER, the ending shook me. Broke me. I cried over the letters he wrote. CRIED PEOPLE.

Other than that I loved how Adrienne told her story to Amanda, because in some way it reconnected their love and relationship as mother and daughter. While also helping Amanda cope with her own loss. I really enjoyed Adrienne and her kids - even if they are all grown up because her relationship with them is really special.

Overall, I cried a lot while reading this book. It was so freaking sweet and heartbreaking. I will probably never get over the ending and will always see it has a happy one: where paul lives and him and Adrienne live happily ever after. Loved the book. Hate that it made me cry. I need wine.

This just happens to be my first Nicholas Sparks novel, but, while I wasn't overjoyed with it, it certainly won't be my last.

Okay, so how do I put this into perspective. Imagine you're on a diet. You order a salad, but unfortunately, you can't have those delicious buttery croutons that you love, and you opt for the fat-free dressing. The salad is good, but in the end, it's not as satisfying because you know something is missing. Well that's how I felt about this novel, it was good, but not exactly satisfying. Something is missing... probably another 100 pages worth.

I get the message behind the novel, Adrienne was trying to show her daughter that she too has loved and lost, but has had to move on for the sake of her family. I honestly just felt that everything was rushed. I had a hard time feeling for Adrienne's loss in the end because I didn't feel like there was enough development in her relationship with Paul for me to connect. Had there been more chapters perhaps after he left the Inn. There correspondences... something to help the reader feel that connection, I think then maybe the loss would have been felt more.

Perhaps the movie adaptation does a better job at establishing this connection.

This feels more like 2.5 but I don't think I can give it 3 stars. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I don't believe in love at first sight and honestly that sickens me a little bit. I mean you might find the person attractive but love is hard to reach only by looking at that person. It comes gradually. Slowly. Definitely longer than a few days. And here it just happens. They both find each other attractive and they just jump into each other the next day. That is what I didn't like. I was aware of this in the beginning and I knew I wouldn't enjoy it that much, so I have no hard feelings for it. The other thing that I thought was lacking a bit is probably the fact that Adriene is not really that connected with her kids. I personally think the book needed more baking in this concept. And throwing all this aside, I don't believe a person can change you in three days, alright? That's just impossible. And you cannot say that it is only him/her you should thank for the change.
P.s. I didn't enjoy reading it, but I neither hated it. I just, to be honest, didn't really care for the plot or for the characters. They weren't that good to connect to.

“The greater the love, the greater the tragedy when it's over.”

Amanda has lost her husband, so her mother sits her down and tells her the story of her and Paul. The two met in a hotel and as luck would have it, Paul was the only guest and the weather was terribly bad. Adrienne and Paul immediately sensed that there was more between them and it wasn't long before they were emotionally and physically close. Because of Paul's family, he had to leave and that was the end, but also the beginning. The story, tells of several relationships and family dramas, that are so different and yet they have one thing in common. As always, Nicholas Spark describes an intangible love and touches hearts with it.

Beautiful story. I think I would have appreciated it more if I were married or older than I currently am. Still, it kept me interested and invested until I turned the last page. 3 stars for this one by one of my favorite authors. ❤️
