Spoiler Alert - Though it started out really well, I hated the ending! In typical Sparks fashion, your not left with a happy ending. Though I have been a fan of his (The Notebook is one of my favorites), I am growing weary of these endings. I just don't like to invest my time and the roller coaster of emotions he sends you through only to be left unsatisfied. (If you've seen the movie Cold Mountain, you may get what I mean. I felt the same way at the end of it, "Hello...I spent 3 hours watching this movie for this!) Anyway, I felt like this could have been a really good book had it ended differently. I mean the poor guy is left with absolutely nothing, while (thanks to him)she goes off into the sunset with another man. Yes, it was a great selfless act that he did, but it doesn't make for a great ending. Did I mention the man was left with nothing! hehe

n  “In our time together, you claimed a special place in my heart,
one I’ll carry with me forever and that no one can ever replace.”

DEAR JOHN is my first book by Nicholas Sparks but it definitely won’t be my last. Everyone who has read a book by him probably already knows this but he definitely knows how to write a novel that is inexplicably readable and entertaining.

Even when the pacing lagged a little bit, which wasn’t too often, the flow of the writing kept me flipping the pages because I was so engrossed in the story. DEAR JOHN isn’t overly descriptive, but there is just enough detail to where you can clearly picture the setting and environment of each scene.

n  “Love should bring joy, it should grant a person peace,
but here and now, it was bringing only pain.”

I feel like this novel might have affected me more emotionally if I hadn’t seen the movie first since I was already aware of all the twists and how it was going to end. Surprisingly, I thought the movie actually fleshed out the characters more, making them easier to relate to. Although we are privy to the character’s motivations in the book, I cared more about them in the movie.

Another thing DEAR JOHN did well was the depiction of the various types of relationships between the characters. Whether it was family, friends, or lovers, I thought all the connections were well thought out and realistic.

any happiness is only temporary, because there’s nothing to make it last.”

Another book by Sparks and again I'm paralyzed by his writing style. So simple and yet so touching.

I admit that I truly loved the first part of the book although at that moment I thought it's a little bit corny and that I could predict the end. BUT as I kept reading, I realized how I'd underestimated Sparks ...The whole thing was like a roller coaster of emotions. It made me feel happy, angry and crushed. Also the ending disappointed me at first but then I came to know the beauty of it.

Overall, I think the book wasn't a let-down as others had said, but it couldn't compete with The Notebook either!

Dear John

5 stars!

“I fell in love with her when we were together, then fell deeper in love with her in the years we were apart.”

I have a weakness for the Nicholas Sparks novels.

I really liked the narrator of this book a lot. I thought he did a fantastic job! That said, I was disappointed with the ending. Up to the ending the story was good - a little sappy but I like that every now and then. I particularly liked the story with John and his Dad.

**Spoilers**
Once Savannah broke up with John and married Tim I knew it wasn't going to end in a good way. Tim was sick and either he dies so that John can get the girl or John bows out and gets nothing. Either way it would be crappy. It ended up that John bows out plus sells his coins for Tim's recovery and ends up with no girl and no money. I guess that part makes me sad, especially given that Savannah doesn't love Time like she did John. Which makes me angry at Savannah for marring someone when she loved someone else more.

John melihat lagi sisi lain ayahnya, rapuh tetapi sangat metodis, sdh mempersiapkan segalanya jika dirinya meninggal.

Lalu John bertemu kembali dgn Savannah.

I feel...cheated. I'm too sad right now. It's fucking bitter sweet.
I mostly read this because of this:

and this:

and this:

But instead I feel like this:

What do potatoes have to do with anything, you ask?
Well, absolutely nothing. I just thought it was funny.
Don't ask me why. I'm weird.

This is now one of my favorite books! It's the sweetest story about John and Savannah. John meets Savannah while he is on military leave, and they fall in love. When he leaves they promise to write each other every day and Savannah promised she'd wait for him. This book is one of the best books I've ever read. I love Nicholas Sparks, but this one is my favorite out of all of the ones I've read. I definitely recommend it.

The novel Dear John by Nicholas Sparks is the second novel that I have read by him and I was most defiantly not disappointed. Never wanting to set my book down flipping through pages and pages. Sparks illustrates the tale of two people falling in love, but one leaves the other for another.
t
tSparks introduces the main characters John and Savannah. John is returning home to his father for just two weeks from fighting in the war. Floating on his board in the water, gazing at the sun John notices a beautiful brunette girl on the pier. While watching her from the water, she jumps up to sit on the ledge but accidentally knocks over her bag letting in plunge into the water. John quickly swims over to retrieve it and returns it back to her.

tThis spark leads to many days and nights spent together. On John’s last day, Savannah and him confess their love for each other. They both promise to write back and forth to each other. Savannah also promises that she will wait for him to return back home. Months and months pass by and John comes back home. He is only staying in town for a few days. They spend countless amount of hours together and then as soon as you know it John has to leave for two years. Savannah promises to stay together forever no matter how far apart they are. While away at war John receives another letter from Savannah. She writes that she can’t go on everyday without him and needs to move on and says her final goodbyes. John is heart broken. A few months later John gets another letter, this time its about his dad, he is very sick and is in the hospital, John flies home to take care of his father. While in town John finds out Savannah in married to Tim. Later on John’s dad passes away and Tim, Savannah’s husband, is diagnosed with cancer. John decides to sell his fathers valuable coin collection to help pay for Tim’s medical needs.

t
John is all alone now, his father is gone and Savannah has moved on. Even though Savannah shot a bullet through his heart, John is still there for her and will always love her. The theme of the novel is loving someone so much that you can let them go. I recommend this to all readers and look forward to read another one of Nicholas Sparks novels.

This was my first Nicholas Sparks novel and given what I expected, I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't blown away by it, either. The characters weren't complex and the plot was predictable. However, I appreciated that Sparks didn't dish up your standard, run-of-the-mill love story. It was a growing up story more than anything else; we went on a journey, following main character and narrator, John Tyree, as he learned, among other things, how to love, how to forgive, and how to accept the people in his life for who they were and not for who they could have been.

The first few pages made clear this wasn't going to be a novel with a happily-ever-after and I was fine with that. John and Savannah's romance didn't make my spine tingle; in other words, I didn't feel the supposed star-crossed chemistry between them. Their relationship was pretty predictable, surprising only in its traditional and chaste nature, and in that, it was unrealistic for a modern couple.

Perhaps the story got too depressing toward the end, but life gets depressing. Things happen that are unfortunate and you have to deal with them to the best of your own ability, even if that means you disappoint others' expectations of you in the process.

I responded well to John's struggle to understand his father, and I was glad that their relationship reached a good point by the end.

Overall, it was okay. I don't know how soon I'll pick up another of Spark's novels, but I don't regret reading Dear John. Three stars.
