Isabel Allende tıpkı kahramanı Eva Luna gibi, harikulade bir hikâye anlatıcısı

Intriguing and promising in the first third of narration, but then it slows down. Events a bit predictable. Why it is less enchanting than The House of the Spirits?

Sempre que leio Isabel Allende, pergunto-me onde irá buscar imaginação para escrever histórias destas cheias de reviravoltas e de enredos improváveis. O facto é que o faz e bem, e eu nunca me canso de a ler, sobretudo quando quero uma leitura leve mas que tenha um conteúdo bem estruturado.

Ainda não foi este a bater A Casa dos Espíritos, mas não ficou longe.

The tale of a storyteller, which may or may not be reliably told, in an unidentified and quite possibly mythical country in South America.

I read this right after Kalpa Imperial, and I can't think of two books more suited to each other: Kalpa Imperial is the tale of the rise and fall of empires, and Eva Luna just seems like the latest (longest) of those tales, with more details.

This is a book about life not going as planned, and misery overcome by myth and delight.

Recommended if you're in a tales about storytelling mood.

Eva Luna is a storyteller. These are her stories about her mother, her childhood as an orphan, her growing up and becoming a writer, various loves, and the many interesting characters that come and go from her life.

While this book is mainly about Eva, we also get the story of Rolf Carle. His story runs parallel to Eva's, and they eventually meet as adults, but we learn about both of them through the stories of their youth.

This book was well-written, though slow-paced. The characters were strong and interesting. The story was full of fantasy, love, and political drama.

This was an early book was Allende, and the first of her books I have read. I enjoyed the writing, but wasn't a huge fan of the story.

The first book I’ve read by Isabel Allende, and she reminds me of Neil Gaiman: mesmerising popular storytelling at its best.

Eva Luna is a novel from the 1980s, and as such its use of stereotypes sometimes falls below standards now expected in the literary world, but the characters were so grand and involving that they often felt more like archetype than stereotype.

The unnamed fictional country in which Eva lives seems designed to take in as much as possible of the northern half of South America: tropical, Caribbean, oil rich (Venezuela?), vastly forested (Brazil?), but also containing part of the Andes.

Some of the sexuality in the novel - scenarios which female characters enjoy but which, if they had been written by a man would now be dismissed as male fantasies - made me think of an idea mooted a few months ago by a GR friend, that contemporary left & literary discussion of sex has become so focused on avoidance of harm and on power analysis that it’s almost forgotten about pleasure.

Eva Luna seems to be a lightly-metafictional telenovela in a book (albeit I’ve never seen a telenovela, and not watched a soap episode for maybe 15 years). Allende, through her heroine, who appears to be the same age, writes about what it feels like to have so many stories to tell (and she was not wrong, as her prolific output and sales continue now, even if she gets less press coverage than in the 80s and 90s). The semi-fairytale/magic-realist story of the heroine, the strong-willed and gifted daughter of a servant, and her remarkable vagaries of fortune, could be seen as showing too much good luck compared with most real people in such circumstances - but it is also, like the fairytale, a type of story which provides hopes and dreams which may sustain during drab or difficult lives.

I’m always glad to discover that I actually like the work of a popular author, one who writes well enough that I feel no need to make excuses for the style (as I might with, for example, a lot of genre crime). I find it useful to like writers whose books are ubiquitous to borrow or buy, and whom a lot of people have heard of. Isabel Allende can be added to that list.

There is something otherworldly about magical realism, something surreal, whereby the reader is transported into a parallel universe, a universe where, despite the stories ostensibly being set in our world, the colours, sights and sounds are richer and vibrate with the vivacity of the writer's imagination and the sensuality engendered by their prose. Although 'Eva Luna' contains many of the tropes associated with magic realism; political dissidence and violence, a cast of eccentric characters including clairvoyants and curmudgeons, a strong sense of sensuality and a almost limitless litany of surreal scenes and scenarios, Allende's effortless storytelling, her ability to the draw the reader in to the lives of the characters she creates and the richness of the world she imagines causes the reader to forget the feeling of deja vu they sometimes experience during the reading of 'Eva Luna'.

 The story follows Eva Luna, the only daughter of the ethereal Consuelo and her journey from being a girl orphaned at a young age to a full-grown woman. Along the way she comes across a number of characters who serve to shape her personality and future; the gentle Turk Zulema, whose benign nature and joviality belies his deep personal grief over his facial disfigurement. Zulema's lascivious cousin Kamal, seething with sex, the macho rebel Huberto and the sensitive, but no less recalcitrant Rolfe Carle, both of whom act as Eva's love interests, the ying to each other's yang.

Allende, like Eva herself,  uses her natural ability as a storyteller to depict the lives of these characters, their hopes and dreams-too often snuffed out by the remorselessness world around them, their loves, lives and loneliness as seen through the eyes of Eva who is able to pay tribute to these characters, to remember them-as Eva's mother states on her death-bed-there is not death if people remember you and 'Eva Luna' is Allende's way of ensuring these characters stay alive forever in the mind of the reader.

That was extremely easy to breeze through. Isabelle Allende is an extremely talented writer, and this was her book of short stories. I enjoyed it. She has a talent.

This is a reread for me, although the first time around was decades ago. Overall I enjoyed it every bit as much as I did back then. There are some sexual/romantic relationships that I found for today's standards inappropriate, so for this reason I rate this book slightly below House of the Spirits, Ines of my Soul and Island Beneath the Sea.

الرواية ساحرة
هي عبارة عن سرد متسلسل عبر خطين متوازيين الأول خط يحكي سيرة البطلة ايفالونا وهي الجزء الأكبر من الرواية ومحور الأحداث ، والخط الثاني سيرة شريكها في الأحداث الذي ستلتقي به قرب نهاية الأحداث ، وهو رولف كارليه المهاجر الذي هبط على أرض تشيلي هاربا من كوابيسه التي عذبته إثر ما شاهده من
أحداث يشيب لها الولدان ، سواء ما فعله الجيش الروسي الذي احتل شمال النمسا في الحرب العالمية الثانية ، أو حادث موت أبيه البشع كما حدث وكما يستحق
قمة الإبداع يكمن في أسلوب إيزابيل الفريد في تنقلها بأبطالها من مرحلة لمرحلة أخرى بسلاسة وبدون ان تشعر بصدمات ، لديها اسلوب رائع في مزج الخيال بالواقع ، وذكاء في ربط الحدث الخاص بالعام ، فهي هنا -ومن بعد هجرة رولف كارليه واقامته لدى خاله وزوجته في القرية المثالية المكونة من المهاجرين الأوروبيين- اعرض لفترة من أهم فترات تاريخ هذه المنطقة فترة الحكم العسكري الديكتاتوري والانقلابات الدموية وما قابلها من رفض ورغبة عارمة في مقاومتها من قبل جماعة من المتمردين
لقد تمكنت إيزابيل اللندي وببراعة من رسم نقاط التحول في حاية بطلتها من الفقر في بيت العالم الذي نشأت فيه مع أمها التي أنجبتها في ظروف عجيبة وفي ليلة شعرت فيها بفيض من المشاعر تجاه الخادم الهندي الذي يعمل في خدمة حديقة العالم الذي لدغته حية أثناء عمله ، فعالجته بليلة حب أثمرت هذه البطلة الغير عادية !!
فوجدت نفسها تنتقل وبعد وفاة أمها وبعدها وفاة العالم الشغوف بعلم التحنيط من بيت لآخر بتوصية من عرابتها ، التي ربتها تربية صارمة خوفا عليها من الوقوع في الخطيئة ، إلى أن وصلت للقائها بنارانخو ، الذي وصلها لفندق البغاء فقط لتخدم فيه وتعرفت هناك على ميليسيو الشخصية العجيبة غير محددة الجنس
لتشاء الأقدار مرة أخرى أن تلقيها في الشارع يوما في حالة يُرثى لها أثناء أحداث دامية تعيشها البلاد وقتها وتلتقي برياض الحلبي لتنتقل معه إلى قريته الهادئة لتخدمه وتساعده في متجره ونأت هنا أيضا لحلقة عجيبة من الأحداث عندما يأت الزائر العجيب ابن أخو رياض " كمال" الذي تعيش معه سليمة زوجة رياض قصة عشق لمدة ليلة يرحل بعدها لتنهي حياتها ونرى كيف تعاملت الشرطة بقسوة مع ايفالونا لاشتباههم أنها قتلت سيدتها ، لتبدأ بعدها في رحلة أخرى بناء على طلب رياض الذي شعرت وقتها ربما بسبب حاجتها النفسية كمراهقة لرجل يحميها شهم وذو رجولة مثل رياض التي أعطته من الحب ما كان يفتقده ولكنه رفض الاستمرار وفضل لها اتخاذ طريقاً آخر ناصحا إياها أن تتعلم وتواصل طموحها الذي بدأ في حبها لسرد القصص وتأليفها بشكل مشوق
ثم تتجه ايفالونا مرة أخرى للمدينة لتجد نفسها أمام ميمي "ميليسيو سابقا" وتعمل بمصنع البسة عسكرية يديره جنرالا عسكريا يقع في حبها لاحقاً..
تشاء الأقدار مسارا مختلفا إذ تلتقي مرة أخرى في نفس الوقت بهوبيرتو نارانخو الذي اصبح قائدا لجماعة المتمردين. ويقوم مع جماعته بحرب عصابات ضد الجيش والسلطة الديكتاتورية الحاكمة
وبينما هي مندفعة بمشاعرها تجاه هوبيرتو نارانخو -التي عاشت معه لحظات التشرد في الشوارع وجربت معه الجوع والحب - تلتقي وهي تشاركه في احدى عملياته برولف كارليه المصور الذي يعمل كصحفي يوثق بكاميرته أحداث حرب العصابات ومنها هذه الأخيرة التي يهربون فيها فدائيين من السجن ، وكان رولف كارليه سابقا قد شارك بكاميرته في تصوير وتوثيق العمليات الفدائية التي يقوم بها المتمردون في الغابات والجبال ليمارسوا ضغطا علي السلطة ليجبروها علي الخضوع لسلطة الشعب المنهك من الفقر والفساد والظلم
ثم تكمل ايفالونا مشروعها في الكتابة بتوثيقها لحياتها وتجربتها مع الفدائيين ، ليصعد نجمها وتعود لتلتقِ بحبها الحقيقي والاخير ويتوهج بينهما الحب وينتقل إلى كل ما يحيط بهما في تصوير بديع ولا أروع رسمته ايزابيل الليندي في صورة لوحة فنية طبيعية تتفتح فيها الأزهار ويزهر الحب حتى بين الحيوانات ،، ليشفى حبيبها تماما من كوابيسه بتأثير من سحر الحب وقوته في علاج النفوس المتعبة
حبها لهوبيرتو نارانخو ثم انتهاء هذه العاطفة التي اكتشفت انها وقتية !! ، رأيت في رياض الحلبي وصراعه الداخلي ما يشبهني كثيرا ورأيت في ايفالونا وبعض محطات حياتها وخطوط الحب المتقاطعة التي عاشتها ما يشبهني أيضا ، إعجاب الجنرال رودريغيث بها وهيامه بها ايضا كان منطقيا وسط الأحداث ، فهؤلاء الفئة من البشر دائما ما يقعون تحت ضغط العمل القاسي والخوف من ضياع السلطة ، فيحتموا بالحب مع إنسانة بسيطة مثل ايفا في محاولة للبقاء على الجزء البسيط المتبقي من إنسانيته ومشاعره الطبيعية وهربا بالطبع من زوجة اضطر للزواج بها في فترة ما على عكس رغبته
الرواية رائعة رائعة إلى أقصى درجة أنصح بقرائتها
الرائع أنها بدأت الرواية بالعلاج بالحب وانهتها أيضا كذلك وتخللت الرواية أنواع كثيرة من الحب منها الحب الناتج عن العرفان بالجميل مع رياض الحلبي
تقول على لسان بطلتها:"الواقع خليط متنوع لا يمكن قياسه أو حله ، لأن كل شيئ فيه يحدث في الوقت ذاته ،أنني أحاول أن أشق طريقا وسط هذه المتاهة وأن أجعل الحياة محتملة . عندما أكتب أتحدث عن الحياة مثلما أحبها ان تكون ".

"Chamo-me Eva, que quer dizer vida, segundo um livro que a minha mãe consultou para escolher o meu nome. Nasci no quarto dos fundos de uma casa sombria e cresci entre móveis antigos, livros em latim e múmias humanas, mas isso não conseguiu tornar-me melancólica, porque vim ao mundo com um sopro de selva na memória."
