sv: Trojanskorna - eng: The Trojan Women

3 stars - ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

I read this in Swedish but couldn't find the right edition. *sadface*

This play, The Trojan Women ends my "Ancient-Greek-tragedy-drama-weekend" or what to call it. Yesterday I read Prometheus Bound and the day before that Medea. The Trojan Women takes place after the Greek conquest of Troy. We get to hear from the women of Troy about all of the atrocities the Greeks have done to them, and about the horrible future awaiting them in the claws on their captors.

I liked this short play for its condemnation of war and what war can cause. It was quite emotional and touched some important issues, which are still of importance today to discuss. I've read two works so far by Euripides and so far he hasn't disappointed me when it comes to content! Greek mythology can be quite confusing (everybody's related to everybody and so on) and that was the problem here though. You also have to know the story about the Trojan War to understand some of the play and be able to follow what the characters are saying. But I still think the message of this play can reach everyone.

The fact that the whole story was comprised in just 1 scene/landscape and the lack of a plot was a bit boring and bleak. I feel like I should’ve read more of the background info and historical relevance this play had during Ancient Greek society, so I could better grasp some sorta connection between the two.

I can’t believe they killed bby anaphylaxisn (idk how to spell it). But I guess his death kinda cemented to the audience what the plays moral was (it did for me at least).

Overall the story was quite morbid, but I guess there’s has to be some more significance within it, otherwise it wouldn’t be assigned for VCE English :,)

It is difficult to describe a play so rich in ideas and so deep in feeling. What came through to me this time was lament, lamenting the lives of the beloved dead, lamenting the fall of your state, lamenting the life you once had, and lamenting the life now forced upon you. I doubt that Euripides had feminist issues in mind when writing this work, but it is also interesting to read this with feminist ideas of power and powerlessness in my head. Each new reading brings new ways of understanding this superb play, and new ways of understanding my world.

The Women of Troy is a play written 2 and a half thousand years ago, but it still has relevance today. This was required reading for me but I'm definitely not mad about it, and ended up pleasantly surprised.

Set between The Iliad and The Odyssey, Euripides grants a voice to the women caught in the crossfires of the trojan war and the subsequent greek victory. It casts war and violence in a negative light, unusual for the time at which it was written.

Considering how long ago this was written, I was expecting it to be inaccessible and honestly a bit dry. So I was really pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the writing was and how many lines I underlined, not just for academic purposes- but just to go back to and read later.

I don't know if I would necessarily recommend this for pure enjoyment purposes, but if you enjoy ancient greek history and mythology this could be worth the read! It is super short and quick to fly through.

A nice complement to The Iliad, that delves deeper into the feelings and emotions of the characters of Hecuba, Andromache, Helen and Menelaus. The reader gets a clear sense of the agony of the women who have lost their husbands, their home, their positons and their honour after the sacking of Troy. A short but enjoyable read!

september 2022
this reread was more of a ‘let’s hunt for quotes’, but it was still good!

april 2022
this hits a lot harder upon reread, and i picked up on a lot of subtleties that i initially missed: the musical motif, the ever constant presence of the gods just in casual dialogue, etc etc. really powerful and affecting.

december 2021
i feel that to truly connect with and like this more than i do, i desperately need to see it live - reading this translation largely felt clunky and awkward despite the often compelling string of monologues.

in terms of school books: better than gatsby, around the same level as regeneration
