Premessa: io non sopporto il tema del tradimento, mi fa proprio inc***are, non riesco a concepirlo e non voglio che entri nella mia vita nemmeno con un romanzo. Eppure questa volta ho fatto un’eccezione e non me ne sono pentita. Certo, il libro mi ha turbata profondamente, ma sono contenta di aver riflettuto sulla mezza età, sulla fedeltà e la sincerità, sulla fragilità delle relazioni, sull’importanza dell’onestà verso se stessi e nei confronti delle persone care. Ma soprattutto merita la scrittura dettagliata e cristallina, il periodare d’ampio respiro, le descrizioni della natura e delle stagioni, i dialoghi intensi e cesellati e l’indagare costante le proprie inquietudini.

William Dubin e Moses Herzog sono compari

Not for the miserably married!

The book started off wonderfully, with lots of character development and interesting perspectives. Dubin sometimes talked like a book. His take on normal events was generally filled with wise one-liners, which were fun to decipher. The second half of the book seemed to just go in circles but slow down with every page. Nothing seemed to be learned or change. To top it off, there were some racist undertones to finish the book

Marvelous! I'd read The Tenant years ago and it remains one of my all time favorite books today. This, however, is very different in tone and style, but I felt just as fascinated by its main character, William Dubin as I did with Harry Lesser.
Malamud is so amazing at letting us know how others feel even through third-person limited narration, and his secondary characters live and breathe outside of their scenes until we meet them again on the page.
In this case, even the subjects of Dubin's work, (he is a biographer of Thoreau and D.H. Lawrence) became characters in the story. Though Malamud could have stuffed this novel full of details about Dubin's subjects to impress the reader with his knowledge, he chose to reveal only the facts which in turn reveal Dubin's nature.
But the strongest point of this story has to be Dubin's quest for love and Malamud's deep understand of marriage, family relations, and growing older.
I loved this.

Ho abbandonato e ripreso questo libro molte volte nel corso degli ultimi mesi. Non una volta mi sono dimenticata di che si stava parlando. William Dubin, biografo, quando intraprende la scrittura della biografia di Lawrence entra in crisi. Come uomo, come marito, come padre. E' il racconto di pochi anni della vita di Dubin ma che saranno fondamentali. Non c'è un momento di noia in questo romanzo anche se le azioni avvengono soprattutto nel (non)cambiamento del protagonista. A chi è piaciuto Revolutionary Road di Yates questo libro non può non piacere. E' un romanzo che racchiude tutti i temi cari a Malamud e chi lo ha amato nei racconti troverà picevole il ritmo che dà al romanzo. Non posso dire di più. E' uno di quei romanzi che deve essere letto e messo come base a tutte le altre letture.

There were some spot-on reflections of marriage, relationships, ageing and loss of purpose throughout this book, although overall I found it a bit of a depressing read with a selfish and boring main character I didn't much like. The titular Dublin trots all over the countryside on his thin legs for sex, and has little of interest to say for himself. He is stuck in the lives of the literary figures whose biographies he writes (hence the title) but for me, I found the constant drawing on these people tedious as someone who doesn't know much about most of them. Strangely, the character I looked forward to seeing each time she appeared was Fanny, his young girlfriend. She was life and colour and spark which I guess reflects the impact she has on Dubin's grey life and why he likes her so much. Dubin's Lives has some densely and beautifully written prose although I have to say I ended up feeling swamped in nature and weather descriptions and skimmed large chunks of it!

Malamud scrive molto bene, ma questo romanzo -la crisi di mezz’età di un intellettuale che perde la testa per la solita invereconda puttanella- l’ho trovato terribilmente, terribilmente deprimente. Il lettore viene trascinato insieme al protagonista in un vortice intollerabile di squallore e di meschinità. Vorrei non averlo letto. Spero solo che non tutti gli uomini siano come Dubin.

I absolutely loved this novel! It was well written and a great story about love and life, and finding one’s self…
