It is wonderful to have all of LMA's Christmas stories in one volume, however I would have liked it if the editor (Stephen Hines) could have listed the original date of publication for each. The reader then could have seen the progression of LMA's writing through the years. The short stories are not as successful as the longer pieces/novellas. LMA returns to the same topics again and again (talking animals on Christmas Eve, those who have sharing their Christmas with those who have not, etc.), but those themes probably were popular with the reading public at the time. The "Merry Christmas" chapter from Little Women is included here and the storytelling from this remarkable book is head and shoulders above almost everything else contained here. One exception is the nonfiction memoir, "A New Way to Spend Christmas" in which LMA visits the asylums and hospitals on Randalls Island near Boston. It is a most heartwrenching piece, and brings home the importance of sharing Christmas most effectively.
