A great ending installment to a great YA adventure/survival series. I think this book wrapped up everything in a very "feel good" satisfying way. A great series for young readers who are interested in the survival aspects of being out in the wilderness. I remember reading this as a middle schooler and absolutely loving it at the time. I recently did a re-read as an adult. While I did look at it from a much different viewpoint now that I'm older, I still very much liked reading this quick and fast paced story of wilderness survival. Recommended to any outdoor or adventure fans.

What I thought of this book is that is was not the greatest but it was not the worst either, I feel like this kind of book just Is not my type of book. Like I feel like Brian could of been in some more action or something. I like how his bow like never left him though, it was like his prised position. He never left it anywhere and always took care of it. And I feel like there was way to much description for how small this book was. I like how there was a lot but for just the book being that small I feel like there was way to much.

Brian's Hunt is a great continuation to Brian's life story. It shows how he becomes very uneasy in a civilized environment, and how he longs to be back in the wilderness. That is why he makes up his mind to return to his camp out in the wilderness. Shortly after his arrival, he finds a severely injured dog, which he then takes care of. Brian becomes worried about his friends a Cree family that lives not far from his camp. Brian works his way to his friends house and finds a gruesome sight. The house, family pets, and the mother and father of the family have been mutilated by a giant bear. After Brian is through scouting the crime scene, he finds the families daughter alive and fine, although she was in much distress. From this point on, it is Brian's mission to track down, and kill the bear that destroyed his friends family.

One of the things I liked about this book, was the intro, and how it showed Brian's feelings for the civilized world. It helped me understand the reasons for him wanting to return to the wild after his previous experiences there. Another thing I liked about the book is how descriptive it was when it came to certain scenes of the book, like the family's house after the attack, or while Brian is trying to track down the bear. I did not like how gruesome the scene was when Brian found the mother and father of his friends family dead after the bear attack.

I would recommend this book to any young adult, or anyone who has enjoyed any of the other Hatchet sequels.

Personal response: I really enjoyed Brian’s Hunt by Gary Paulson, because I like survival books. The book tells me about surviving in the wild. It also deals with what Brian had to do for hunting and shelter out in the wild. He gets more knowledge as he lives out there longer.

Plot: Brian is a 16 year old boy who is canoeing through the Canadian wilderness. He realizes that the woods are his home. He is happy without the modern things. Brian quits school but still learns on his own with his school books. He reads the books because he wants as much knowledge as possible. He went back to the wilderness again, (this is the fifth book in the series), because he sees it as home now and studies his books out there. One night when Brian was sleeping he heard the crying of an animal near the lake. He then finds out that it is a dog that is badly wounded. He takes care of it by sews his wound and wraps the domestic dog's leg. He packs his stuff in his canoe and takes the dog with him.

Characters: This book is told through Brian's point of view. He changes a lot through his experiences in the wilderness. Brian is a very outdoorsy type of guy. He likes the wilderness and the quietness of woods. He is a reader in the wilderness. Protagonist: Brian and the Malamute dog Antagonist: Devil Bear.
The old dog that Brian found and had to sew up. The dog was scared of Brian at first and after he sewed him up the dog became friendlier. Together they became inseparable.

Setting:This takes place in Canada’s green and lush wilderness. He is away from his parents and civilization. He is in the woods away from modern things, noise and people. The time period could be present day because anyone could go live out in the wilderness if they chose.

Thematic connection: Human vs. Nature, Brian has to have the ability to survive in nature. He also has to realize that this is not a natural habitat for someone that comes from the city to beagle to survive in. He needs the courage to be able to hunt. This is evident when Brian has to kill to survive for food. He also has to cut wood for shelter to stay warm.

Recommendation: I would recommend Brian’s Hunt to eighth grade and beyond because some of the survival techniques may be hard to understand. Both males and females will enjoy this book especially if you are a nature person.

Book 12
Jake Olson

This book is a continue to the end of the last book Brian's return. After find what he was missing he want to still go and visit his friends the longhorns. He said that he wanted to hurry, but he didn't know why he has been living of the wilderness. He was about thirty miles or so from the longhorns camp when in the middle of the night he found a dog with a big gash in her side. He sews it up and wondered what made the gash and then thought that aren't these the dogs the use at the longhorns camp? He thought he was crazy, but was he really?

One of some of the cause and effects are when Brian stitched up the dog the dog was able to help him with what he needed and to smell things Brian could not. Also another cause and effect is if he didn't listen to his thought of going and seeing the long horn some things might not as happened in the book and it would be a whole different book.

This book is amazing. It is filled with so many details I feel like i'm in it. that is one of the many great reasons why I love this author is because he can give so many detail and its amazing. Although this book does not have the greatest language as in swearing. Also this book is kind of gorry and describes, to me a little to mush of blood and decaying things. Even though I think anybody who loves the wilderness should read this book, I guarantee you will love it

Brian's hunt wasn't the best book. It is the last book of the hatchet series but there isn't much to it. It takes place in the wilderness again, following Brian's Return the book before. Brian had finally come back to the woods and he is re learning everything that he had forgotten but he does well. He learns how to fight a bear, that is the only new thing that happens in this book.

Although, I enjoy hiking and running, I am not into the extreme outdoors and therefore I am not really into Paulsen books too much.

This book is the most recent in a series of books, starting with Hatchet, which follows Brian Robeson as he journeys through the Canadian wilderness. With his parents’ permission, Brian chooses to go back and live in the wilderness because he prefers it over his life in the city. Several days into his stay, he finds a wounded dog whom he befriends and nurtures back to help. Then Brian heads to north to check on his Cree friends but once he arrives, Brian finds that several of them have been killed. At this point, Brian sets out to hunt and kill whoever or whatever hurt his dog and his friends.

tThis book would appeal to young boys and girls interested in the outdoors. At times it details how Brian hunts and cleans food. However, I also think that this book would appeal to struggling middle school readers because it is high-interest but low difficulty in regards to vocabulary and length.

This is only my second Brian book. I've read Hatchet and this one. I know there are several books in between these two, but I'll get to them later.
Brian is such a brave boy. He feels more at home in the wilderness than in society. He loves to hunt, fish, and learn more about surviving in the wild.
I think it was so sweet of him to risk himself to help the dog. I don't know many dogs that would stay calm while someone was sewing them up, but she stayed very calm. He was also very brave for going after the bear that killed the family that he knew. I felt so badly for the girl. She lost her whole family to the bear attack.

If this book was combined with Brian's Return, I would’ve enjoyed the latter better. Brian’s Hunt continues off from where we left Brian, who was on his way to the Cree trapping family he met in Brian's Winter. He meets an injured dog along the way, and witnesses a cruel and disturbing scene that leads Brian to The Hunt. In this last (for now) book in the Brian’s Saga series, Paulsen shows us a harshness of nature that is not present in the previous books. The one thing I didn’t like about this book was the addition of the Cree family’s daughter, who is around Brian’s age. Paulsen tempts us with a potential romance but doesn’t deliver – she’s a necessary (but minor) installment in this story, but Brian’s thoughts about her made it seem like she has a bigger role. (See, I stop understanding Brian when he starts turning into a teenager.) But nevertheless, this book is intense and captivating, and has a powerful message that is driven by vivid imagery and suspenseful scenes.

I very much so enjoyed this book there were points where it gave me the chills and I think that that is what Gary Paulsen was going for, if you don't believe that I have read this book it is about Brian who finds a dog which leads to him finding his friends slaughtered in their cabin and Brian ends up killing the bear that killed them. I'd say that this book had a very good plot that was sad, disturbing, and adventurous.

strong conclusion to brian’s story. the twist surprised me coming from a children’s book, but makes sense as the series progressively gets more intense. ends rather abruptly in similar fashion to the other books, but story felt complete.
