Super excited to finally read my favorite anime. Ichigo is so cold, one of my favourite moments was him saying "if i cared what people think I'd have dyed my hair black a long time ago." Rukia was even funnier here than in the anime and the overall idea of hollows and soul reapers will never not be awesome. Only 4 stars and not 5 because the stuff with orihime and her brother dragged a little bit.

Bleach is a shounen action series with a weird sense of humor.

Ichigo Kurosaki is a guy who can see ghosts and gets pulled into the world of "soul reapers" by total accident. Now he's stuck battling monsters called Hallows and saving the souls of the living and the dead.

This first volume is a fairly straight-forward monster of the week type manga with a lot of concepts thrown in that will be expanded upon in future volumes. There are points where the dialogue borders on infodump territory for me and feels unnatural, but considering the amount it has to cover in a few chapters to get Ichigo (and the readers) up to speed, it's not too bad.

*Read for Graphic Novel Book Club @Goodyear 3/2023*

I think there is going to have to come a point where I learn that I simply do not like most manga stories. A boy who is already very perfect and very special, gets even more perfect and special.

We fear that which we cannot see.

With the series ending this year and having most of the books already I decided I wanted to look back at earlier stuff and maybe read all the way to the end by time 2019 is over. So time to go back to the beginning of one of the most popular books in the franchise and get my Soul Samurai on. :)

Ichigo (Japanese for Strawberry) Kurosaki is not your typical Japanese kid. His hair is an unusual color, He is a tough guy that doesn't mind trouble, and he can interact with ghosts. Right from the beginning of the story he is helping a ghost movie on after some punks knocked a condolence offering to her after dying nearby. Little would he know that a whole world outside of his normal life would be opening up soon as he eventually meets Rukia Kuchiki and becomes a soul reaper himself to save his family and Rukia.

As an introductory volume we get to meet Ichigo's friends each with some sort of spirit related issues and his family who are not exactly typical either but I feel it was handled really well even slipping a little of the feels between the action. :)

My favorite part would have to be Orihime day dreaming about Ichigo and her at the park alone slowly turning into a sport related assassination. It is so random I laughed when a race to the teeter totter turned into a mad dash with another racer trying to pass them. :)

You Should Read This If You Like: typical Shounen manga with an underdog protagonist who turns out to be super fucking powerful, badass actions scenes, sarcastic characters, etc.

*This is a series review up to Vol. 25*

I’m going to get so much flack for saying this but Bleach was underwhelming. This is probably a me problem and not a universal one seeing as how the anime has been running for nigh on forever now and this series is even getting a soft reboot. But man, this manga feels so incomplete.

I’m a ride and die Naruto fan and, however unintentionally it might be, but comparisons were made while reading this. My main problem with this series is how very quickly everything seems to develop and progress for our protagonist Ichigo. Almost every single obstacle thrown his way is quickly overcome and surpassed with his powers growing stronger every arc. Unlike in Naruto, Vol. 01: Uzumaki Naruto where the characters steadily undergo change, working hard to become better and stronger Shinobi (for the most part), here the character progression feels very unearned.

Ichigo gets more powerful just because it doesn't feel earned. Even when he has training he masters his powers quickly, in a matter of days. Unlike in Naruto where you could clearly tell how strong a character is at any given period of time and based on that calculate who they can or can't win against. Here Ichigo fights with characters who should be 100 times stronger than him, a mere novice, and yet he defeats them easily. With an unexplained increase in power. Again feel very unearned.

I’ve read up to Vol. 25. Bleach so far has done a fairly good job of expanding the world and building on the existing mythology. But I can't see the boundaries of the world. I don’t know the limitations of this world, what is possible and to how far, what is impossible, etc. So it just feels like the plot is figuring out these things alongside the readers, stacking on the story and adding more powers as the goes along. It just feels so, so incomplete to me for some reason I can;t see myself continuing on with this series.

I like Ichigo and most of the other characters I’ve been introduced to thus far. But I never feel any sense of danger for them. Even when Rukia was about to be executed I knew Ichigo would somehow save her. There is no real sense of urgency either. But my biggest problem with this series is I cannot see what Ichigo stands for. Why does he want to be a Shinigami? What are his motivations? Where does he want to be in the future? What’s in this for him? We got a glimpse of this in the arc about his mother's death. But beyond that? I don’t know and at this point I don’t really want to find out either. 3 Stars for the series overall.

This manga series is absolutely amazing! Anyone considering whether or not to read this manga, read it now! And for those of you currently reading the series but not yet finished with all the books, you will be blown away by Tite Kubo's advancement in skill! The beginning of bleach has amazing artwork, and at the end there's such an incredible improvement in the way he draws the characters... Even when I thought (after reading the first book) there was no room for Tite Kubo to improve, since he was already such an amazing mangaka. The storyline is truly amazing (and still ongoing, might I add) and blew me away! And, even though I don't usually dwell on things like clothes, the clothes are absolutely amazing! All the different designs he's thought up... In all previous mangas I've read, the mangaka will stick to a few sets of outfits for his characters to wear, but Tite Kubo goes all out! Especially in the filler sketches... I feel as if I am rambling, but the point is, this is a truly amazing manga, and that it should be read right away!

High-schooler Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see and hear ghosts, but when a ghost-eating monster attacks him, a mysterious woman shows up to fight it. Their encounter imbues him with the power to destroy such monsters, but also embroils him in the long-running plots and grudges of several secret societies that govern the dead.

This long-running action manga is full of conflict, humor, intrigue, and its own unique cosmology, and is well worth the read. -- Hillary D.
