Oh my god! This is so interesting. This is my first ever time reading manga and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story was so unique and the characters were amazing. I'm so excited for volume 2.
My first graphic novel and manga experience was definitely a good one and I might already be hooked!
I didn't know how I would get on with the format but I found myself just as immersed in the story, after a few pages, as I would an ordinary novel. This managed to pack in so much in such little text and I was consistently guessing where the plot would take me next. It also managed to transgress into so many genres that I find it hard that there would be a reader who would not like this!
The story follows high school super brain, Light, after he acquires a magical notebook that has fallen to earth. This is, of course, the Death Note, and each person written in the pages will find themselves deceased before the minute is out. Light manages to become the perfect anti-villain and his wit, super smart tactics and willingness to do good with his new evil power aligned me to his immoral cause.
The artwork was simplistic in colour and design and yet its varied format and sizing kept each page feeling fresh and pleasing to the eye. Takeshi Obata is a one seriously good artist and his skill really helped to bring this story to life. I can't wait to see more of his brilliant work and continue on with Tsugumi Ohba's complex and compelling story.
It’s funny how I started reading this book due to immense boredom. I wanted to experiment with the manga genre and so I got on the internet to look for some good mangas. Then I found this. I’d already heard a bit about Death Note, thanks to a few of my anime-crazy friends. The anime series is immensely popular and most people who have never watched an anime before are acting like anime experts because they've seen this particular one. I haven’t seen a single episode so I decided I’ll start reading the manga and then give the anime a try. Plus this manga series is not as long as most other popular manga series which have been going on for years (Bleach, One Piece and Naruto, I’m looking at you).
This anime is categorized under the Shonen sub-genre of mangas. That basically means that this series is marketed for boys and men. I’m neither. But so what? I can read and I shall. And so I began Death Note Volume 1.
My first problem was that I’ve had no manga experience before. I didn’t even know how to read a manga. I’m a manga newbie, so even though I’m embarrassed to admit this, I have to mention that I did a Google search on "How to read a manga". That might just have been my lowest moment. So anyways, a few pages in and I got the hang of it. And it was a piece of cake after that. Well, this manga may have just rocked my world.
The story opens with a group of Shinigamis (Gods of Death) chatting and making merry. One of them suddenly realizes that he has lost his Death Note in the human world. It falls into the hands of Yagami Raito, a 17 year old student who starts using the Death Note for good, even though he doesn't believe in it at first. Shinigami Ryuuku pays him a visit and checks up on Raito’s work on the Death Note and then gives him the Death Note to keep. This leads up to a battle between the two chosen ones in the human world.
As we all know, "With great power comes great responsibility". Raito has to bear the consequences of his actions. Even though he only causes the death of people who are "rotten", he still has to come to terms with the fact that these are lives that he’s dealing with. Every life has a purpose and he knows that. But he decides to rid the world of its filth by using the only way he knows how --- the Death Note.
The other main character in the story, is L. Nobody knows who he is. Nobody knows his real name or his face. The one thing they do know is that he is a private investigator who works on the most obscure cases that baffles the Interpol and ICPO. And he serves out justice each time. He challenges Raito on live television saying he would catch him and make him pay for his evil deeds. Thus, the showdown between two individuals who don’t know each other’s identity begins. They both plan to find and kill the other and the first to be found out... will die.
This manga had me gasping for breath multiple times. The Shinigami scared me, Raito was in parts charming and in parts menacing. It has all the ingredients to be a mind-blowing plot. I love the whole concept of vigilante justice doled out by Raito. Ultimately, he is using his power for good but even then he’s decided to be the God of the world and to think of something like that is scary in itself, isn’t it? Having the power to decide whether a man can live or die? Some responsibility that is.
A question that comes to mind. Is killing bad people, a crime?
Note: The name Raito has been changed to Light in some English translations. Raito is the pronunciation of Light in Japanese. They are one and the same.
Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom (Death Note, #1), Tsugumi Ohba
Centers around high school student Light Yagami, who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name (and knowing their face). The plot follows his attempt to create and lead a world "cleansed of evil" which he will rule as "God" using the notebook, and the conflicts between himself and anyone he sees as an obstacle, from law enforcement to the mafia to the greatest detective in the world.

I've already watched "Death Note" so the story is not shocking for me,but it's as interesting as it was last summer. The characters are amazing and I can't wait to see how they develop throughout the series.Light VS L is probably one of the most epic "battles" I've ever had a chance of reading/watching.Apart from the obviously intelligent characters and an unique and captivating story,I really love the fact that this series questions our morality and principles. What is right and what is wrong? In Death Note there's no clear line between right and wrong, good and bad-everyone has different opinions and everyone sees Light's or L's actions differently. That's what makes Death Note so interesting.
Takeshi Obata is the artist/illustrator of Death Note and man,he is simply amazing.Give this guy an applause.
So,overall,I really enjoyed reading this and I'm already starting the next volume. PS.I don't know why but I've listened to I Follow Rivers while reading this and I loved it.Great combination.☺
It's better than I expected. Even after hearing the above mentioned Goodreaders raving about it, I was wary. This is one of those series that is ridiculously effing famous and popular and from a distance, frankly, it doesn't look too good. (I still don't like the art, but I digress.) I guess this sounds hypocritical, after all my raving and ranting about Fullmetal Alchemist, doesn't it? But I had sworn never to touch InuYasha, One Piece, Naruto, or Death Note because there was no way they could live up to the hype/be good enough to make the fans bearable. I'm still going to avoid three of the above like the plague, if you're wondering. But Death Note I guess I'll read. It's in no small part due to Cillian and Ryuk, who are gaga over it and can be quite tantalizing with their little hints and such. If the first two volumes (which are all I've read at this point) hadn't been decent, though, not even they could have kept me reading.
So, why I'll read the whole series:
- The idea is really fascinating. It remains to be seen if it asks the kind of enormous questions FMA did, but even if it doesn't reach that scope it'll still be interesting. - L is kinda adorable. How old is he, anyhow? He looks like a little kid sometimes. - The battle of wits between geniuses has a lot of potential, and I'm interested.
Things I'm less happy with:
- There's some pretty blatant sexism on the part of one character. Raye Pember, really? If your fiance was that accomplished, why did you basically tell her to go home and make teh babiez? Not cool. If this is a pattern, I may drop the series. No, really. Please tell me some girls get to kick ass? - I'm not really a fan of the art in some parts. The covers are... garish at best and not something I want sitting around where my (already anti-anime/manga) mother might see them. - Ryuk, I'm sorry, but your namesake is an eyesore. Really, really, really unpleasant to look on. Interesting, but unpleasant.
I'm only two volumes in, but I also feel like this story is hurt by the form manga demands of it. There could have been a lot more development of the beginning, of Light moving from disbelieving to using the power of the note so liberally even Ryuk was surprised. That transition was basically skipped, and so it makes it harder to believe others don't already suspect him.
It's been a long time since I watched half of the anime episodes of Death Note. Ever since then, I knew it'd come a time when I will pick up the manga and actually finish the story. I am so excited to get back into the Death Note world. Here is a quick intro to the story.
A Shinigami, or death god, drops his Death Note in the human world, mainly because he is bored, and a japanese teenager, Light, picks it up. Light is not your average kid, on the outside he is an exremely bright student, the best at anything he does, but on the inside he has a dark personality. Light finds out the by writing people's name on the Death Note they die. So he sets out to clear any kind of bad people from the face of the earth. Basically he has a God syndrome and with the power of the Death Note he might actually get what he wants. People are even calling him Kira, the god that comes to kill the criminals.
But Light's actions don't get unnoticed. L works with the police from time to time to solve whatever mysteries cupture his attention and the Kira mystery is one of them. L is not your typical investigator, he never showed his face and noone knows his real name and he sometimes works his cases from a distance but he always has the results he wants.
Both Light and L are very smart. And seeing them trying to outsmart each other makes one of the most intriguing stories ever.
