This one was pretty good. Some nice reveals, but I feel like it was setting up for the next one
Summary: Gangu and Hanataro see Byukya coming and Gangu decides he'll fight him. Ichego wakes up and is with Yoruichi. He was saved by the hollow mask in his pocket... the one he threw out when he was in the underground tunnel. Yoruichi reveals out that she has another form and she actually a human! Byukya has pulls out his sword and says 1000 cherry blossoms the blade turns to peddles and Gangu gets cuts all over. Before Byukya can deliver the final blow he is stopped by the captain of the 13th Ukitake.
Ichego shows up and says he's going to fight Byukya. The captain of the 13th thinks he recognizes Ichego Byukya says nope.. Ichego blocks Byukya's attacks. Byukya goes to do his flower move but Yoruichi shows up out of nowhere and wraps the sword. Punches Ichego in his wounds, takes him and leaves. During this she has a witty banter with Byukia about how much stronger she is then him and that she was in a secret guard in the company. While leaving she says shes calling a truce for 3 days and when she comes back Ichego will be strong enough to defeat him.
Meanwhile, Orihime and Uryu are dressed as soul reapers and hiding among them. Yoruichi tells ichego that all swords have two phases and the second is call bankai all captains (except kenpachi because hes such a good fighter) must master it before they could become captains, and mastery takes 10-20 years. She is going to teach him in 3 days. Orihime and Uryu are confronted by a drunk man about not having their swords and random strangers help them out. Uryu realizes this is a trap and captain Kurotsuchi blows up his own men. Uryu starts to fight him and has Orihime run away. Uryu finds out that Kurotsuchi killed his grandfather and he says "on my honor as a quincy I will kill you"
A lot of these bad guys just ramble on and on. I can enjoy a villain monologue, no problem, it just needs to be written well, but all of these guys reads so boring. Even the creepy researcher guy is boring once he gets to monologuing. I think this might for real be my cue to take a break from Bleach, and read something else, because besides being bored I've started skimming.
I like volume fourteen for its introduction to the Captain of the sixth court guard company and Rukia's older brother, Byuakuya Kuchiki, who because of his own sense of justice and duty is willing to let his younger sister die. Who we are led to believe is the strongest captain in the soul society.
I've never been much of a Ishida guy, so the final third's of this volume's focus on Ishida should annoy me, right? However, this is when Ishida encounters Mayuri Kurotsuchi, captain of the 12th division. And let me tell you how much I love Mayuri Kurotsuchi: A lot. Oh, he's awful. He's terrible. There's nothing redeeming about him as a person (unless you consider the elevation of knowledge over humanity a good trait--and as someone who loves knowledge, I get the appeal), but oh boy. Just look at him on the page! Watch his immoral battle methods (which we don't fully get into in this volume)! Oh baby, he's such a great foe. And he's one of the rare captains (as memory serves) who never gets much redemption. Aside from the actual captain villains (which is spoilery at this point in the story, so I'll avoid comment there), he's the one captain that remains truly grotesque. And there's something wonderfully appealing about that--not to emulate, or even idolize, but as a function of the story's narrative.
There's other good stuff going on here--we finally see Yoruichi's true form, for example--but oomph. When the volume ends, all you'll really remember is Mr. Kurotsuchi and his menacing figure.
I am at the edge of my seat. These soul reaper captains and assistant captains are so cool and no joke. Also Kenny’s and Yachiru’s slice of a backstory makes me sad
