La ragazza con l’orecchino di perla di Tracy Chevalier è un romanzo storico da cui è stato tratto anche l’omonimo film diretto da Peter Webber, candidato a tre premi Oscar: miglior scenografia, miglior fotografia e migliori costumi.

Il libro ruota attorno alla vita del pittore Johannes Vermeer, noto come Jan Vermeer, e in particolare al suo quadro Ragazza col turbante, conosciuto anche come Ragazza con l’orecchino di perla.

La “ragazza” in questione, nel romanzo della Chevalier, è Griet, una sedicenne che abita a Delft nel quartiere protestante nel XVII secolo. Griet si trova costretta ad andare a servizio nella casa di Jan Vermeer e della moglie Catharina, nel quartiere dove risiedono i cattolici, perché il padre non può più lavorare a causa di una ferita agli occhi subita finché lavorava su piastrelle di ceramica.

Oltre alle normali incombenze, Griet si ritroverà a pulire l’atelier del noto pittore e da qui si svilupperà l’intera vicenda che porterà poi alla creazione del famoso quadro.

«Non è il quadro che è cattolico o protestante», spiegò, «ma chi lo guarda, e quello che lui si aspetta di vedere. Un quadro in una chiesa è come una candela in una stanza buia: serve a vedere meglio. È il ponte tra noi e Dio. Ma non è una candela protestante o cattolica. È una candela e basta».

Ovviamente l’opera della Chevalier non è di pura invenzione; quello che non possiamo sapere con certezza è l’esistenza di Griet, la musa ispiratrice del quadro. Ci sono però delle leggende, se così le vogliamo chiamare, che ruotano attorno all’origine di quest’opera d’arte dando un tocco di sentimentalismo. Considerate infatti che Tracy Chevalier non è stata la prima a scrivere un romanzo su Ragazza col turbante. Nel 1986 Marta Morazzoni scrisse La ragazza col turbante, che è stato tradotto in ben nove lingue.

Quando sono andata a scovare informazioni sul pittore, sono stata subito catturata da un altro nome: Carel Fabritius. Sembra infatti che l’apprendistato di Vermeer iniziò nel 1647, forse presso Fabritius. Se mi seguite (o se siete appassionati e grandi conoscitori dell’arte) questo nome non vi è di certo nuovo. Il cardellino (quadro) e Il cardellino (libro di Donna Tartt) vi dice nulla? Trovo pazzesco che da due artisti, che sembrano collegati, siano nati due libri ispirati a due loro quadri. Una bella coincidenza.

È indiscutibile che ne La ragazza con l’orecchino di perla ci sia stato molto studio da parte dell’autrice, che riporta nel libro non solo diversi quadri citati indirettamente appartenenti allo stesso pittore come La lattaia, Il bicchiere di vino oppure Due gentiluomini e una fanciulla con bicchiere di vino e Concerto a tre, ma anche le tecniche usate da Jan Vermeer, come l’uso dei lapislazzuli per ricavare il blu, o l’uso della camera oscura per definire l’esatta fisionomia, i dettagli dei personaggi raffigurati e la posizione degli oggetti.

Ho deciso di leggere La ragazza con l’orecchino di perla in un periodo in cui avevo bisogno di qualcosa di leggero, e l’unico libro che avevo in casa che poteva essere adatto per la situazione era proprio questo.

E ci ho visto giusto. Non è che sia un romanzo divertente eh, però è scorrevole, è delicato, è raffinato. Forse può essere definito lento. Forse per alcuni in questo libro non succede nulla. Ma a mio avviso succedeno molte cose. Al di là dei personaggi, del loro sviluppo, la loro crescita anche in termini di maturità, c’è storia e c’è arte. C’è un processo creativo descritto nei minimi particolari e questi dettagli, queste descrizioni, mi hanno trasmesso calma, tranquillità, quasi pace interiore.

Siamo così abituati ad una vita frenetica che quando leggiamo un libro che si prende il suo tempo per portare il lettore dal punto A, l’inizio, al punto B, la fine, ci sembra noioso, ci sembra lento, ci sembra che non dica nulla. Non è così. Almeno questo è il mio punto di vista e queste sono le sensazioni che ho provato leggendo La ragazza con l’orecchino di perla di Tracy Chevalier.

È vero, il libro è osannato un po’ da tutti, molti hanno gridato (e gridano) al capolavoro. Per me non è così, ma è stato sicuramente un libro che ho letto molto volentieri, che è riuscito a trasmettermi le sensazioni e le emozioni di cui avevo bisogno in quel dato momento, che è riuscito ad affascinarmi, a farmi amare il processo creativo di un artista e volare con la fantasia.

Chissà che storia nascondono i quadri che ci circondano.

Chissà.

I loved that this novel brought forth an explanation for one of history’s most iconic paintings. Well written and imaginative, but also down to earth and very believable. I only wish the the ending was not so abrupt, the aftermath of events could have been explored in an interesting way. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable read for any art lover.

Kada ir kaip suprantame meno vertę? Kiek iš tiesų kainuoja paveikslas? Tiek jo kūrėjui, tiek pozuotojui? Kaip išmokstame žvelgti į meną širdimi – ar su tokiu gebėjimu gimstame, ar jį išsiugdome? Nors Tracy Chevalier romanas apimtimi ir nedidukas, bet aprėpia tiek daug: tai ir „coming of age“ drama, ir 17 amžiaus Olandijos portretas, ir sudėtinga materialinių ir vidinių vertybių sandūra šeimos, visuomenės, draugystės akivaizdoje. Čia ir veikėjai tokie ryškūs, kaip ir pagrindiniu veikėju tampančio paveikslo spalvos. Ne vienareikšmiai, tokie daugiasluoksniai, kaip ir meno kūriniai – su daug spalvų ir atspalvių, skirtingai sužibantys skirtingoje šviesoje. Čia ir stipri, net absoliučios rutiniškos kasdienybės akivaizdoje pagauli istorija – ne meilės, ačiū Dievui. Bent jau ne tokios meilės, kokią galbūt įsivaizduotume. Ir šioji kur kas įdomesnė, kur kas sudėtingesnė, todėl ir įsimintina.

Tracy Chevalier – tikra žodžio virtuozė. Ji nuostabiai piešia takoskyrą tarp niūrios, banalios, nereikšmingos kasdienybės, kurioje po vienu stogu patiri ir didžiausius pažeminimus, ir didžiausius malonumus. Bet net ir šie niekada nebūna vienareikšmiai – tiek vieni, tiek kiti romane reiškia auką. Ir klausimas, kuri didesnė – tarnauti žmogui, ar tarnauti menui. Klausimas, kuri skausmingesnė. Daug vietos autorė palieka skaitytojo interpretacijai, tačiau mane ypač džiugino pagrindinės veikėjos portretas – Grėtė tokia tikra, kad net skauda. Retas atvejis, kuomet šešiolikmetės portretas nepasirodo erzinantis, o „coming of age“ aspektas nebūna tik toleruotinas, tolimas jau subrendusiam skaitytojui. Įspūdingas jos moralinis stuburas, stiprybė, tramdomas vaikiškas naivumas, stiprus vidinis pojūtis, dažniausiai vedantis tinkama etine linkme, tačiau paaugliškai suklaidinantis realizmo vardan. Verti paminėjimo visi, absoliučiai visi romano veikėjai – tai vienas tų atvejų, kuomet autorei neprireikia storos knygos, kad visus paverstų įsimintinais, ryškiais, beprotiškai skirtingais: nuo ignoruojamos isterijos, iki skausmingos apatijos. Daug šioje knygoje sunkių, net beviltiškų emocijų, bet skaitosi ji lengvai ir greitai – retas atvejis, kuomet knyga tokia ryškiai atmosferiška, kinematografiška, autorei nedaugžodžiaujant.

Abejoju, ar suklysčiau pasakydama, kad knyga žiauri – tai nėra nei romantiškas, nei lengvas skaitinys. Jos bekompromisis realizmas neleidžia autorei nuklysti nei į saldumą, nei į 17-ojo amžiaus visuomenėje vietos neturintį naivumą, idealizmą – bet kokios jų užuominos užgniaužiamos vos užgimę. Visi veikėjai, visi sprendimai turi labai aiškias vietas, o romano pabaiga tik įrodo, jog Chevalier nedaro jokių nuolaidų patrauklesnio siužeto vardan – taip autorė ir tampa išskirtiniu balsu pseudo-istorinės literatūros kontekste.

Wow, I love art inspired by art. I was so enamoured by this book and the nature of the main character, I found myself consistently going back to the cover where the original painting was displayed and just looking at it seeing the story unfold. I love how this author was so inspired to create a story surrounding such a visceral painting.

Great reading experience, written so accessibly and beautifully that I honestly feel like anyone could pick this up and enjoy it.

The novel is the fictional story behind one of the most known paintings of Johannes Vermeer and it includes glimpses into the painter's life. I did not know of the existence of the painter before i read this novel, maybe because so few of his paintings are known. However, after I finished the book I started to search for Vermeer's work in museums and I admit they are special, he has a special gift for the light.

Dar vienas sodrus, išraiškingas saldainis šio žanro asorti dėžutėje. Ir vėl labai gražus tikro istorijos herojaus pasiskolinimas romanui. Žinoma, nebūktit naivūs arba pikti ir neįsivaizduokit, kad skaitot Johannes Vermeerio biografiją. Kaip kad „Mažėje“ buvo pasiskolinta Madame Tussaud, taip ir čia - tapytojas greičiau tapo romano atspirtimi, nuo kurios vėliau nusipynė pasakojimas, nei kad buvo atpasakota jo gyvenimo istorija, padabinta beletristika.
Tai iškart ir sufleruoju - jei mėgavotės Mažės istorija, tai patiks ir ši. Na arba - atvirkščiai.

Man „Mergina su perlo auskaru“ apskritai pasirodė toks puikus miksas tarp lengvai skaitomo, kabinančio romano ir subtilaus, liūdnoko pasakojimo: ryškus savo nuotaikomis, sodrus savo vaizdiniais, įsimintinas įvairiais charakteriais, tačiau ne perdėm melancholiškas, lėtas ar meniškas - jog reiklautų atidumo ir susikaupimo. Ir tikrai - čia jokios saldybės ar naivumo, tačiau ir aukštomis materijomis nebandoma maivytis; na man atrodo - romanas turi viską, kad atitiktų savo žanro reikalavimus ir nevirstų tik vidutinišku skaitalėliu.

Kodėl tada ne šedevras, kodėl tada 4* iš 5? Na nes istorinių romanų kartelę stipriai į aukštumas man iškėlusi Kristina Sabaliauskaitė. Nes turėjo aiškų moralą ir pastatė į akistatą su to laikmečio realybe, tačiau nepalietė taip, kad įgeltų asmeniškai. Nes, matyt, pritrūko kažkokios tai razinos.

Il pittore Jan Vermeer, nacque e mori nella cittadina olandese di Delft.
Grazie alla scarsità di notizie biografiche sull’artista, la scrittrice americana Tracy Chevalier è riuscita ad intessere una storia che ha del verosimile in un contesto storico e reale.
Il romanzo è suddiviso in quattro capitoli che suddividono cronologicamente la storia (1664-1665-1666-1676).

A causa del disagio economico in cui versa la sua famiglia, la sedicenne Griet viene mandata a servizio presso la casa del pittore Vermeer.
Figlia di un pittore di piastrelle, Griet non solo è sensibile all’Arte ma ne è affascinata.
Questa partecipazione e la giovane età la porteranno a trasferire la passione alla pittura verso il suo esecutore.

La Chevalier riesce bene laddove usa la stessa tecnica che ha reso Vermeer un artista celebre, ossia l’uso della luce.
La storia reale del quadro (detto anche “La ragazza col turbante) è tutt’oggi misteriosa e la scrittrice americana riesce a far sì che ogni dettaglio diventi un meccanismo narrativo.

Alcune cose meno credibili ma tutto sommato un buon romanzo storico, soprattutto per la rivendicazione dell'Arte come momento di bellezza nella dura vita di una giovane fantesca:


” Anni a tirar su acqua dal pozzo, a torcere biancheria carica d’acqua, a raschiare pavimenti, a svuotare vasi da notte, senza uno spiraglio di bellezza o colore o luce nella mia vita mi si prospettarono davanti agli occhi come un paesaggio piatto dove, in lontananza, si vedeva quel mare che non avrei mai raggiunto. Se non potevo lavorare con i colori, se non potevo stare vicino a lui, non sapevo come avrei potuto continuare a sgobbare in quella casa.”

I didn't expect this book to be so easy to read, I thought it would be heavier and more descriptive.

Reading this book was like reading the diary of Griet. A sixteen year old girl writing about her life as a maid. She went about doing her daily chores and taking care of the children. Things started to pick up when she assisted Vermeer. The relationship between Griet and Vermeer was vague as he was such a mysterious man.

3.5 stars. Sad to say, I wasn't impressed. It was just alright for me, the characters weren't developed well and the plot wasn't captivating enough. The book was inspired by the famous painting but I wasn't inspired by the book.

Story of a girl who goes to work as a maid in the Vermeer household. She is entranced with his paintings and also with his "mystique". His wife is jealous of Greit's beautify immediately. Vermeer's patron, a sleazy, domineering man, eventually orders Vermeer to paint a picture of Greit for himself.

The portrait is done. Greit enjoys sitting for her Master and also assisting him with mixing paints, etc. She begins to feel affection for him and thinks he feels the same.

There is also a "butcher's" son who is in love with her and she eventually marries him. In the end Vermeer's wife orders Greit out of the house when she discovers the portrait.

I enjoyed the book but had hoped there would be a more substantial and fulfilling ending. Fans of Vermeer and historical fiction will enjoy this book. I love the actual painting itself and have a small copy of it in my home.

Przeczytałam jednym tchem! Niezwykle klimatyczna opowieść o kulisach powstania słynnego obrazu.
I choć jest to tylko fikcja literacka, postać Griet została tak dobrze wykreowana, chemia łącząca ją i Vermeera jest tak namacalna, że aż nie wiem, co powiedzieć. Choć bohaterowie tej książki nie przyznają się otwarcie do swoich uczuć, widać, że coś jest na rzeczy. Zdradzają ich słowa, spojrzenia, dotyk. Nie wiem, czy można nazwać tę książkę historią miłosną, ale właśnie tak ją poniekąd odbieram.

A wonderful story, well told. Brings to life Delft in 1664. How accurate was the period described, I don’t know, but it came across as true. The description of time and place added a layer of texture to the story, without detracting or distracting. The Vermeer household and associated lifestyle was all the more believable because of how it fit into the various classes within Delft society: better off than some, but still clearly struggling to make ends meet. Griet’s relationships with the various people in her life, the changes in those relationships and the machinations of the Vermeer household make for an engaging story. The story is appropriately like a wonderful painting, rich in details and layers. The other thing I got from this novel: I looked at Vermeer’s paintings. Amazing. I knew nothing about him or his work before.
