Bridge to Terabithia is one of the more memorable books that I've read, because of the powerful nature of it, especially the ending. The characters have stuck with me over the years. And I'll never forget the story.

But the first act is so boring and slow that I have to reflect it in my review with a four-star rating. Don't give up on this one. It really does get good.

Apparently the zenith of classic MG tearjerkers, only I made the mistake of reading it to my daughter immediately after we finished WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS, and this pales in comparison.

They're remarkably similar boy coming-of-age stories, but everybody in this one is less likable, and the sense of place and time feels penciled in. Worst of all, the kids sing The Carpenters' "Sing, Sing a Song" on the way to church, which I haven't heard in fifty years, but probably heard a thousand times when I was their age, and I never, ever wanted to hear it again.

কিছু কিছু বই থাকে যা পড়ার সময় পাঠককে নিয়ে যায় ঐ জগতে, পড়ার পরও সে বইয়ের রেশ রয়ে য��য় বহু���িন। 'ব্রীজ টু টেরাবিথিয়া' নামের ১৪১ পেজের নভেলাটি আমার কাছে তেমন একটি বই বলেই মনে হয়েছে। মনে হয়েছে এই বই আমি আরেকবার পড়বো, তারপর আরেকবার, তারপর আরেকবার এবং তারপর আরো শতবার।

খানিকটা (বেশ খানিকটা) অবহেলা নিয়ে বড় হওয়া ছেলে জেসলি অ্যারন, যে এইবার কিনা ক্লাস ফাইভে উঠেছে। বাবা-মায়ের পাঁচ সন্তানের মাঝে একমাত্র ছেলে জেস, ভাই-বোনের সংখ্যার ক্রমে যার নাম্বার ৩। একমাত্র ছেলে হওয়া সত্ত্বেও নিন্ম-মধ্যবিত্ত সংসারের গৃহস্থালী কাজের অনেকটাই সে করে। তার বড় দুই বোন বলতে গেলে কোন কাজই করে না, আর ছোট দুজনকে তো বয়সে কারণে বাদই দিলাম।

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর যেমন তার ছুটি গল্পে লিখেছেন ‘তেরো-চৌদ্দ বৎসরের ছেলের মতো পৃথিবীতে এমন বালাই আর নাই। তাহার মুখে আধো-আধো কথাও ন্যাকামি, পাকা কথাও জ্যাঠামি এবং কথামাত্রই প্রগল্‌ভতা।’ তেমনি এই বইয়ের ১০ বছর বয়সী জেস এর ক্ষেত্রেও আমার এই সেইম কথাটাই মনে হয়েছে। বন্ধু বলে কেউ নেই, সহপাঠীদের সাথে খুব একটা জমেনা, ওদিকে পরিবারের কারো কাছ থেকে ভালোবাসার যে উষ্ণতাটা তার পাবার কথা, অজ্ঞাত কারণবশত সে তা পায় না। নিজেকে প্রমাণ করার একটা স্পৃহা নিজের মধ্যে অজান্তেই তৈরী হতে থাকে। কিশোর মনে বার বার মনে হয়, এবারের স্কুলের খেলার প্রতিযোগিতায়, দৌড়ে তাকে ফার্স্ট হতেই হবে। দেখিয়ে দিতে হবে সে আসলে আর পাঁচটা কিশোর থেকে একটু হলেও আলাদা। সে লক্ষ্যেই, প্রতিদিন ভোরবেলায় সবাই যখন ঘুমিয়ে থাকে তখন সে পা টিপে টিপে বাইরে মাঠে গিয়ে দৌড় প্র্যাকটিস করে, নিজেকে প্রস্তুত করে।

স্কুলের ফার্স্ট রাউন্ডের খেলার দিন কনফিডেন্স নিয়ে দৌড় শুরু করে এবং শুরুতেই এগিয়ে যায় সে। কিন্তু শেষ করার খানিকটা আগে টের পায় তার চাইতেও শক্তিশালী একজন তার সাথে মাঠে নেমেছে। কিন্তু এমন তো হবার কথা নয়, তার জানামতে এমন তো কেউ নেই। তাহলে কে তার ঘাড়ে নিঃশ্বাস ফেলছে? ঘাড় ঘুরিয়ে দেখতেই দেখে, এতো নতুন মেয়েটা যে কিনা মাত্র গতকালই তাদের মফস্বলে এসেছে, উঠেছে তাদের পাশের বাড়িতেই। খানিকটা অবাক হতে হতেই সে দেখে মেয়েটা তাকে পাশ কাটিয়ে যাচ্ছে। প্রাণপণ চেষ্টা করেও জেস মেয়েটার সাথে পেরে ওঠেনা। এত দিনের পরিশ্রম সব বৃথা হয়ে যায় তার। একই সাথে হারার দুঃখ এবং মেয়েটার প্রতি সম্মান জেগে ওঠে জেসের মনে।

এরপর কিভাবে কিভাবে যেন শার্ট প্যান্ট পড়া এই অদ্ভুত মেয়ে; লেসলি বার্কের সাথে বন্ধুত্ব হয়ে যায় জেসের। আস্তে আস্তে জেস লেসলি সম্পর্কে জানে সে এবং লেসলির সম্পর্কে জানতে জানতে নতুন করে নিজেকেও জানে। লেসলিদের বাসার পেছনে পাইন গাছের বনে ওদের নতুন জগত 'টেরাবিথিয়া' গড়ে তোলে। টেরাবিথিয়া হচ্ছে ওদের নিজেদের রাজ্য, যেখানে যেতে হয় একটা ছোট্ট হ্রদ পার হয়ে। আর এ কাজটা ওরা করে হ্রদের এপাশে একটা গাছের সাথে ঝোলানো দড়ি দিয়ে। লেসলিদের বাসার পেছনের পাইন বন পার হয়ে হ্রদের পাশে যাও, দড়িটা দুহাতে শক্ত করে ধরো, একটু পিছিয়ে গিয়ে নিজেকে ছুঁড়ে দাও ওপারে; ব্যস পৌছে গেলে টেরাবিথিয়ায়। এ টেরাবিথিয়ায় জেস-লেসলি রাজা-রানী, তবে এটা শুধু পদেই সীমাবদ্ধ, সম্পর্কটা তাদের শুধুই বন্ধুত্বের। স্কুল শেষে হাতের কাজ শেষ করে প্রায় প্রতিদিনই তাদের সময় কাটে এই টেরাবিথিয়ায়। শুধু এই টেরাবিথিয়াতেই না, স্কুলে, নিজেদের দৈনন্দিন কাজে অজান্তেই ওরা হয়ে ওঠে নিজেদের পরিপূরক। আর ওদের এই বন্ধুত্বে নতুন করে যোগ দেয় প্রিন্স টেরিয়ান। প্রিন্স টেরিয়ান হচ্ছে লেসলিকে দেয়া জেসের প্রথম উপহার, তুলতুলে একটা কুকুরছানা। লেসলি আর প্রিন্স টেরিয়ানকে মিলে জীবনের শ্রেষ্ঠ সময়টা কাটায় জেস।

কিন্তু সময় সব সময় একরকম থাকে না। একটা ঘটনায় জেসের এই সুন্দর সময়দের দেয়াল ভেঙ্গে পড়ে। কি হয় সেটা জানতে নাহয় বইটাই পড়ুন।

অনেকটা বলে দিলেও বিশ্বাস করুন বইটা পড়তে আপনার একটুকু বিরক্ত লাগবেনা। বইটার সাথে এতটাই একাত্ম হয়ে মিশে যাবেন যে হয়তো কখনো হেসে উঠবেন লেসলি জেসের সাথে, কখনো বা আপনার প্রচন্ড রাগ হবে ওদের ওপর দাদাগিরি করা স্কুলের সিনিয়র ক্লাসের ছাত্রী জেনিসের ওপর, কখনো বা দুফোঁটা জল নেমে আসবে আপনার চোখ বেয়ে। ক্যাথেরিন প্যাটারসন এতটাই সুন্দর করে লিখেছেন, আপনি বইটা হাতে নিয়ে কখন শেষ করে ফেলবেন টেরই পাবেন না। তবে লেখককে ধন্যবাদ দেয়ার সাথে সাথে আমি অনেক অনেক ধন্যবাদ দিতে চাই অনুবাদক সালমান হককে। প্রথমত এত সুন্দর একটা বই অনুবাদ করে পাঠকের হাতে তুলে দেবার জন্য। তিনি অনুবাদ না করলে কখনো হয়তো এই বইটা আমার পড়াই হতো না। আর দ্বিতীয়ত, এত চমৎকার সাবলীল ভাবে অনুবাদ করার জন্য। সালমান হকের অনুবাদ আরো বেশ কিছু পড়েছি আমি এবং প্রতিক্ষেত্রেই মনে হয়েছে, এটা মোটেও অনুবাদ নয়, শক্তিশালী কোন কথাসাহিত্যিকের মৌলিক কোন কাজ পড়ছি আমি। এতটাই সুন্দর করে অনুবাদ করেছেনে তিনি।

সবশেষে এই দীর্ঘ রিভিউ পড়ে আসা পাঠককে বলতে চাই, আপনি যে জনরার পাঠকই হোন না কেন, এই বইটা মিস দেয়া কোনভাবেই ঠিক হবে না।

I don't see how a middle grade book can do this to somebody.

Yes, I cried so much I couldn’t properly see to finish the last chapter.

I clearly remember watching the movie back in 2007, the rich imagined world and that adventure Leslie and Jess created for themselves. But for the life of me I could not remember how it all ended. So I grabbed the book of my shelf and decided to find out.
Now I know that I mentally blocked-out the end; because just thinking of Jess’ reaction makes tears well-up in my eyes.

I love how this book show the readers just how to use their imaginations - How to build your own world and live your own adventure. Even as an adult I’m tempted kick reality out and go live in my own world.
I like that Katherine starts of this book kind of slow and boring and then picks up the pace and voyage as the fantasy world grow.

The end just striped me raw. The way Jess’ feelings are expressed and how he deals just ripped out my heart.

I read this for Middle Grade March.
I’d never heard of this one before it was recommended to me.
It’s a very sad poignant story. Grief.

It’s magical and mystical in parts.

The ending caught me off guard. Yes, there was tears.

I dimly remember reading this as a child. It seems not to have made much impression on me however, and considering I often read books above my age group, it might have been for that reason. I say this because I am not rating it low for traumatizing me as a kid, but because rereading it as an adult makes me annoyed at how a book with so many negative messages could win a Newberry.

Lets run down a few of them.

1. The sheer shallowness of Jesse's sisters as characters. It borders on misogyny, and I don't accuse books of that lightly. The two older sisters are thoughtless and often detestable, including after the big twist. May Belle is portrayed more sympathetically as just being kind of a puppy dog, but is still annoying and is the character used to talk about hell.

2. The weird attitudes on violence. One cringe-worthy passage is when Jesse, grieving over Leslie, slugs May Belle hard in the face because she asked if he saw her laid out. He feels bad about it, but good lord, could you imagine that today?

Another is how the school girl bully is weeping not so much over being abused, and hardcore, but the other kids knowing it and cruelly teasing her about it. And how kids need to defend parents who abuse.

"There was a rule at Lark creek, more important than anything Mr. Turner made up or fussed about. That was the rule that you never nuxed up troubles at home with life at school...It didn't matter if their own fathers were in the state hospital or the federal prison, they hadn't betrayed theirs, and Janice had."

And there's no real reflection on this. It just happens, and is taken for granted, even by the enlightened Leslie who seems more proud that she gave good advice than horrified by how many parents beat their kids.

3. As other reviewers said, this horrible chestnut in so many words:

If you cheat on your girl friend by going on a trip to an art museum with your teacher who you had a crush on, she will be dead and cremated when you come back.

The whole death plot twist has many odd messages. What is she trying to say? That if you try to escape, it's bad? Jesse uses art to escape his life, and it can't be a coincidence she died during his trip to an art museum. She died on the way to her own source of escape, the quiet place where she could believe all the good things about the rural life, and none of the bad.

If she died neutrally, say from a disease, it still would be a tragedy. But the manner of death is too linked to Jesse in a way that blames him for comfort, and that might be part of the trauma many kids feel when they read the book.

4. The death in general.

Reading it now, it's odd that for a book that might help kids deal with loss, how little of it actually is designed to do so. She dies when Jesse is away. She is cremated so he can't see the body. There was no service. Jesse has to make his own closure. It's done very briefly too.

It's odd. There's also the whole "punished for escapism," "she died to give him imagination," "too good to live," and other subtexts. What was striking about rereading it is how brief the death and aftermath is. It fades right into the "building a bridge" chapter, then it ends.

It's weird that a book with so many conflicting messages should be winning the most prestigious award in kids lit. I don't think hard themes should be avoided, but the book really doesn't handle them well. Heck, death is a hard subject for adults to deal with, let alone kids. Extra care should be taken, but if anything Bridge feels more like a realistic, literary take aimed as much for parents as kids.

I watched the movie when I was a child. A few months ago I saw this book on my shelf and decided to greet my inner child again. It was completely and utterly worth it... I know this is a children's book and a very very short read, but the joy, sadness, confusion and life lessons that this book carries literally made me cry in the end. If you want to get in touch with your inner child and still get all the emotional and deeo feels, I highly recommend this book to you.

When I read this in 5th grade, I really liked it for the first 75% of the story. Jess was kind of a moron, but Leslie was really cool, and I found myself wishing I had a friend who could make up great stories and imaginary worlds in our secret fort in the woods.

And then Katherine Paterson decided to smack me upside the head with the cold, dead fish of Reality. (I'm not sure how that metaphor was supposed to work, but I'm going with it because that's honestly how it felt)

Leslie DIED?!?!

I can still remember getting to that part of the book and just sitting there saying, "Wait, what? WHAT?" I refused to believe that anyone could DIE just by falling into a creek, and still think it's a really stupid way to kill off a character.
