Read this one for English class three years ago, and picked it up again before hearing hear speak at a conference I attended. Great book! The stories in it will really make you marvel..
This is the story of Rolland and Heidi Baker, focusing on their experiences in Mozambique as missionaries. In Africa they experienced not only disaster and poverty on a national level, but national repentance and revival as Africa responded to God. Through the Bakers' delegation of responsibility and leadership, at least five thousand churches were started in Africa in less than a decade.
This is one of the most life-changing, life impacting books I've ever read. Heidi and Rolland are radical lovers of God who have lived in garbage dumps and shacks all across Mozambique, taking in thousands and thousands of orphans with no way of taking care of them. They depend on Jesus every day to be all that they need...and He shows up and multiplies food daily, raises the dead, opens blind eyes and ears...etc. You can't come away without your heart being broken for the orphans and the widows.
Love this book. It shows the miraculous provision of GOD. Yes, I do believe miracles still happen today. One quote that is really speaking to me, "But more deeply, in order for you to be useful to the Master here-or anywhere-you must be close to Him and in love with Him. To the degree that you are intimate with Him, you will know what to do, what you must do." I know this to be true and am striving for a more intimate relationship daily. Also, they stress that there is no formula or mission strategy. They give the people they meet the living Jesus, by loving them. "We came to love the poorest of the poor into the Kingdom, not promise them a cheap road to health and wealth." "He calls me to love every single person I see every single day."
A much needed book to read. Contains a message of love and being poor in spirit. It definitely is a message for the church. It’s Encouraging and challenging.
Books like these can be turning points in the life of believers (and unbelievers!). Seeing modern-day Acts played out before your eyes with such a clear and concise message: Jesus is enough. It will jar you back into right perspective. It will pull out of you a cry to God for authenticity and compassion. You may close this book when you've reached the end and repent. Or, because it showcases without shame the destitution of the truly poor, you may simply be left undone.
There is a BIGGER picture to the Christian life, and it involves us recognizing the Truth of Jesus.
