I wanted to read "The Art of War" for a long time because I saw it referenced in quite a few shows and movies. Now that I finished it, I don't understand what the hype is about!

I'm not saying the book is useless per se, but I didn't think anything mentioned in the book is helpful to survive in today's world where small wars are being fought in everyday life while big wars go on in the peripheral vision.

I thought, perhaps, the book would provide me wisdom that would help me in my daily life or change my perspective about things, but that wasn't the case.

However, the book holds some profound words that would make you think about war and its evil consequences. Sun Zhu stresses the importance of some form of trickery in winning the war, which renders how contemptible the act truly is.

For the most part, I did enjoy reading about different strategies you can use in war, various types of battlegrounds, how to control an army, when to use offense and defense, how to use the resources to your benefit, and the treacherous ways to subdue your enemy.

However, most of the advice on how to successfully win a war was clichéd, for example, know yourself and the enemy, plan before going in blind, don't show your cards, don't get carried away by emotions. And other statements were about things that you should do in order to win rather than how to do them.

All in all, it's an interesting book if you want to learn more about war, but I didn't think any of the information is relevant in today's age.

I thought this would contain more wisdom than it did. I’ve heard so many people rave about it that I expected it to be more readily applicable to modern-day conflict. It’s interesting because of its age, but not for much else.

Glad I finally read this book. I know it's considered one of the ultimate classics and I had always put it off because it's short, justifying the procrastination to myself by saying "I can read it in a day it's no big deal if I start tomorrow." Well tomorrow finally came and I read it.

I found the chapters on maneuvering and land to be the most fascinating. The direct descriptions and exact measurements of how to respond in these situations were enthralling.

I was obsessed with this book in Middle-School. I was a strange young lad.

I find it a little funny that people are reviewing it poorly because they thought it was going to be a guide on how to deal with the daily, relatable struggles of life. Uh . . . no, this is just straight-up army vs army combat. I don't think Sun Tzu was going to have any insightful words on how to get over a break-up, or how to have more courage in social situations. Some of these reviews had me laughing.

Even though many of the tactics used here just wouldn't work in modern warfare (Hell, they wouldn't even have a situation to be used), getting to read the words of a military genius from that time period is really interesting. I love this book and re-read it every now and then.

Update: I find myself not agreeing with my own previous statement of Sun Tzu's strategies being useless in today's warfare. I'm puzzled I even said it. I'm going to give myself the benefit of the doubt and assume I was speaking specifically of the various horse and spear strategies, or the other obvious things that would pertain to then and not now. However, I think it should be said that the man's 'Philosophies' on warfare are indeed timeless. Much of how he goes about waging and winning war can still be learned from in modern times.

Forse avrei dovuto farlo prima.

Spassoso, esilarante, demenziale.

So many little wars must be waged daily. Works on the battlefield and the office.

CLASSICS:

"When the enemy is relaxed, make them toil. When full, starve them. When settled, make them move."

"In conflict, straightforward actions generally lead to engagement, surprising actions generally lead to victory."

"Thus those skilled in war subdue the enemy's army without battle .... They conquer by strategy."

"Know the enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles you will never be in peril. When you are ignorant of the enemy, but know yourself, your chances of winning or losing are equal. If ignorant both of your enemy and yourself, you are certain in every battle to be in peril."

"In war, numbers alone confer no advantage."

"To ... not prepare is the greatest of crimes; to be prepared beforehand for any contingency is the greatest of virtues."

"What is of the greatest importance in war is extraordinary speed: One cannot afford to neglect opportunity."

While Sun Tzu is constantly praised for his work on The Art of War, I find it hard to believe that it has inspired anyone. This famous military strategy book has provided people such as Napoleon and the cast of 'Survivor: China' advice on handling the opposing force. However, despite the simple (yet adequate) translation that Lionel Giles provided, The Art of War does nothing more than to reiterate common sense. Sun Tzu asks the audience to not show off their strong points, but to lead the enemy to think that they are at a weak state. Does the average right-headed general not know this?

In addition to that, Sun Tzu starts off by glorifying his tactics and dares any ignorant generals to oppose him. He says that he can predict a battle's outcome based on that alone. It almost seems as if he is basking in his own arrogance.

The Art of War may have once been an excellent strategy book, but it's also out-of-date in many ways. Only read this if you're interested in Imperial Chinese military.
