A much respected and read piece of work, I found it to be a hugely boring read. There is no novelty of idea and the comments by the prophet fail to inspire. Maybe the work was ahead of its time when first published but when read today it is at best an average read. Avoid.

This is a semi-poetic collection of views on important things in life, like love, giving, crime and punishment, pain, talking, and beauty. They are told by a wise person who gives his opinions when solicited by the town on his day of departure. I like this part:

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

I read it again today. What a difference 3+ years can make between readings. This good book now looks even better.

"You often say, 'I would give, but only to the deserving.'
The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pasture.
They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish."

"Some of you say, 'Joy is greater than sorrow,' and others say, 'Nay, sorrow is the greater.'
But I say unto you, they are inseparable."

54 sayfalık dev kitap.
El Mustafa yıllardır beklediği gemiye binip yaşadığı yerden uzaklaşacakken halk ona merak ettiklerini sorup El Mustafa'dan hakikati isterler. Bunun üzerine sorulan her soruya karşılık öğütler alırlar.

in times like these the world needs to be reminded of its essential aspects to realise and reflect on their preponderance in our lives. Our duties towards the surrounding- its animate and inanimate segments, their innocent actions and reactions at certain stages of this mortal life.

this book has helped me keep my sanity. reading it any number of times will be less in a lifetime.

“Verily the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul, and then walks grinning in the funeral.”
—Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

No words can do justice to this beautiful book. The poetic prose had me so captivated that I started to read it out loud. Seldom does it happen that the words feel like music themselves. There are parts of this book that I’ll keep going back to time and again only to find a deeper meaning to them. Learnt and contemplated a great deal through the majestic words of Gibran. In all honesty I haven’t felt more satisfied after reading a book ever. But also at the same time I’ll have to admit it gets overwhelming since a few essays aren’t unanimous and some are difficult to comprehend. One ought to read it multiple times to devour this novella on spiritual and philosophical ideas on life. It was published about a century ago but doesn’t fail to resonate with us even today.

Re-read a classic to start off the new year. As with every classic, this too turned up in a new light. With echoes of Schopenhauer, Kant and even Comte, this deep poem suddenly took new life in this reading. Now what is left is to search out which way the influence spread before flowering in this expression - east to west, the other way, or is it an early amalgamation of all philosophy like all truly great poems are.

There are certain books that speak to the heart and send shivers up the spine as you read them. The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran is one of those books. It will help make you a better person, it will help dampen demons in the soul, it will help set perspectives, it will help you to never underestimate your self-worth, it will make you question if you are doing enough to help your fellow human, and it will help inspire you to level up your appreciation of the world around you. Truly, truly amazing! But enough of me babbling on. Here are some of my favorite quotes.

n  ❖ " The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea;
And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.
But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure;
And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.
For self is a sea boundless and measureless." ❖
n

n  ❖ "The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the Archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable." ❖
n

n  ❖ "Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”
But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.
Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced." ❖
