I read this with my son, as I thought he would appreciate the story, but would not be able to handle Melville's cetological masterpiece just yet (not for many more years), with its long discussions of whales and nautical terms. Of course, the writing doesn't stack up to Melville's classic, but I still enjoyed the storyline and my son said it was his favorite book that we've read to date (of course he says that almost every time we finish a new book).
It’s an interesting story of a time long gone but... the badly explained Christianity and the several uses of the d word make it not a book I would let children read. It’s not as good as I remember from childhood.
I appreciate these books as ways to read classics in an easier (and shorter) way.
Another amazing classic. This book was a total thriller from beginning to end. I will admit, I cheered for Moby Dick at the end. I was glad when Ahab finally died. Overall, great classic.
Classics are not my favorite book but I liked this one, it was a quick read when I had time and I enjoyed it and if you like more classic books , I recommend
Moby dick is a story about a schoolmaster named ishmel who goes to the sea when he feels the need to heal himself spiritually. This time he decides to go whaling instead of going to a normal boat. On his way he meets a canibal indian named queegueg who becomes his best friend. They both go to a ship with a ragher strange captain. He has an obsession with finding and killing the whale that stripped him of his leg, moby dick, or the white whale. The two pals decide to join the crew, will they find and kill moby dick or will they die trying. Find out in moby dick.
tThat it is about how they go on a 3 year trip in the ocean killing whales and taking the oil out of them because it is liquid gold and they want to kill Moby Dick because of how big it is and how much oil it would have in its head. The two main characters are Queequeg who is a cannibal who is a harpooner, and Ishmael become friends and then he backs him up when they don’t want him on the boat because of he a cannibal and then Ishmael backs him up so that he can go on a trip with them because nobody really knew anybody. That they went fishing but for a lot bigger of a thing and when I go fishing I normally catch things that are a pound give or take and they are going for a whale that weight multiple tons and they use shears and I use Rod and Reel. That they encounter Moby Dick sending people overboard and then he causes a whirlpool that pulls all the people that fell out of the boat underwater were only a few will survive and the rest will die. That they go on an adventure through the ocean trying to look for whales that they can take the oil from and then become filthy rich.
tYeah, I feel like I had the connection with the characters in the book because they were risking their lives to catch whales kind of like when I go into a spot where I’m fishing because no matter where you are you always run the risk of injury or even worse death. That I feel like I would go on a huge fishing trip for maybe a mouth but there is no way I could stay on a boat with people that I don’t know for three years and also I wouldn’t go stabbing whales because knowing these days it is highly illegal to do to the huge decline in all of the whale species in the world. Yeah, that people are still killing whales in the world because they want them still for the oil and the meat and they also want them for the ivory that the jaw is made out of due to the huge incline of the price for Ivory on the black market. It reminds me of the books that are created by the tv series whale wars and it tells you all about the sad truth of the reason why people still kill a whale in this day and age.
tThat my most favorite part was how Ishmael a strong Christian backs up a cannibal and lies for him he is a part of the same religion as him so that he could be a part of the three-year journey in the ocean. That I think he did a really good job at making all the word in the book carry and have a lot of meaning behind them all But I think it would have been better if he would be made it shorter because he keeps the same topic going for way too long and it would have been better if he would have summed things up a little bit. I would recommend it to people that like to read about adventure and exploration and that they would be okay with the book bringing up the deaths of people who were chasing a whale and they also have to be okay with the death of whales.
