The story of the self-declared "Mahdi" of Sudan, Muhammad Ahmad (1844-1885), "restorer of faith," fundamentalist Islamic religious leader. His armies conquered the country, defeated several Egyptian and British armies and occupied Karthoum after a lengthy siege, beheading the British governor, General "Chinese" Gordon in 1885.
