В "The Deeper Meaning of Liff" Дъглас Адамс и Джон Лойд (продуцент на "Blackadder" и създател на брилянтното викторинно[?] шоу "QI") правят нещо от изключителна важност. Във Великобритания (а и навсякъде другаде) безчет думи не правят нищо друго, освен да висят по табелите на знайни и незнайни градове, градчета и селца. В същото време, често срещани преживявания, чувства, ситуации и обекти, които всички ние познаваме, остават неописани с нужния термин. Този "речник на неща, за които все още няма думи" е точно за това. С една единствена дума вече може да опишете следното:
- безполезните повдигания на ръка и вежди, в отчаян опит да се привлече вниманието на келнер или барман
- необходимото минимално време за симулиране на дълбока концентрация пред всяка картина в галерията, за да не ви помислят за кръгъл идиот
- разнообразието от звуци, които издавате в кабинката на публична тоалетна, която по една или друга причина не се заключва, за да известите новопристигащите за присъствието си
Гледайки примерите, които дадох, се сещам за още една ситуация, нуждаеща се от специфична дума: безплодните усилия да запом��иш колкото се може повече, от прочетените някъде шеги, за да възпроизведеш впоследствие само две-три от тях и то не от най-добрите.

I love Douglas Adams, but I think this book was a lot funnier when it was Adams sitting around with his buddies thinking of entries. But as someone in a quite room, it's just not that interesting. I kept it around for waiting rooms so I'd have something to read, but wouldn't care if I'm disturbed.

We all know them... The things in life that we all experience, but which don't necessarily have a name.

This is a dictionary of those things.

Ely: The feeling that something, somewhere has just gone horribly wrong.

As an added twist, each of the words defined in the meaning of Liff is actually a placename somewhere in the world. Many of them are actually various odd village names from the UK (there are plenty, I live about five miles from 'Six Mile Bottom'!), but there are plenty from further afield too.

One of the great things about this book however, is that its one of those that you can dip into for just a couple of minutes. A quick read before turning out the light at night, and you don't have to remember a narrative (useful for the very tired!)

I do think that there should be a concerted campaign to make some of the more useful entries into words in common usage.

Much of the same content as the The Meaning of Liff. While I like the idea of the earlier book as a pocket dictionary, I preferred the standard book format of this one, which also included a few humorous drawn pictures.

A fun novelty item. I don't know why they needed an appendix essentially defining the terms in reverse, but it's a handy thing to have if you're holed up at work with only infinitesimal bites of down time to spare and you need a pick-me-up.

Though, honestly, a few of the parts of speech had me questioning everything. In particular, I'm pretty sure the suffix "-ness" is typically reserved for nouns. A bindle is also already a word, so the fact that it was given a second meaning was a little odd. It's certainly not a thing I'd discount over minutiae, though.

I cannot but love this witty little dictionary: the first entry in it is the town where I was born.

But this is great reading for non-Aalstians also. It is THE perfect toiletside booklet, it seems to me. Then again, be warned: you might spend more time on the throne than is advisable and your housemates will wonder why each time you come out of the loo you have this big grin on your face.

Genius! Not many writers have the ability to make you burst out loud laughing, sometimes for a good long while making people look over their shoulders strangely at you, but Adams could, and this dictionary of words that there aren't any words for (yet) is such a simple yet brilliant idea, but carried out in a fashion only as well as Douglas (and Lloyd) could.

Der tiefere Sinn des Labenz ist die deutsche Version zu "The Deeper Meaning of Liff".
Allerdings ist der Inhalt komplett anders und an deutsche Namen und Bezeichnungen angepasst. Für Sven Böttcher war das also nicht nur eine reine Übersetzungsaufgabe, sondern quasi das Neuschreiben eines Buchs.
Achtung! Das Buch enthält auch die englische Original-Fassung am Ende, diese muss also nicht extra gekauft werden.

Das Buch ist aufgebaut wie ein Wörterbuch - Bezeichnung und dann Erklärung.
Beispiel:

Something fun to keep around the house to pick up and laugh at a few more entries when you've got a minute to spare. Some of the definitions totally work, others less so, but overall the best dictionary I've ever read.
