I refuse to write a review for one of the best books ever written. Asking a serious fantasy fan to write a review for Lord of the Rings is like asking a Christian to write a review for The Bible. So instead I will supply you with this graph:
In "The Fellowship of the Ring," Tolkien masterfully constructs a world of staggering depth and complexity. The narrative, steeped in rich lore and history, unfolds with a meticulousness that echoes the grandeur of legendary epics. Characters, each uniquely etched, embark on a quest that is as perilous as it is poignant, revealing the multifaceted nature of courage and friendship. The prose, a harmonious blend of eloquence and clarity, invites the reader to traverse Middle-earth, a realm where myth and reality coalesce. This seminal work in fantasy literature not only sets the benchmark for the genre but also stands as a timeless testament to the power of storytelling. As the inaugural volume of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, it promises a journey replete with awe and wonder, an adventure that continues to enrapture its audience. Tolkien masterly weaves in Christian themes, particularly in the portrayal of sacrifice, redemption, and the struggle between good and evil. Gandalf's perspective on Gollum is particularly poignant, embodying the Christian ethos of pity and forgiveness. He expresses a deep sense of compassion for Gollum, recognizing the tragic nature of his corruption by the Ring. This moment serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for redemption in even the most fallen characters. It's a profound lesson in empathy and understanding, emphasizing the importance of mercy over judgment. Gandalf's approach towards Gollum reflects a deep-seated Christian value, underscoring the potential for grace and forgiveness in a world marred by sin and darkness.
This is a classic fantasy novel. I love that the hero isn't some powerful warrior, but is instead a brave little hobbit who is caught up in a world that is far beyond anything he could've imagined.
This volume is simply beautiful; the themed picture on the front and the colored page edges add beauty and character. Not as fancy as some other collector volumes, and no pictures inside, but will do very nicely as a collector item on a budget.
Reading this classic for the first time was an interesting experience.
I was not captivated by the plot or the characters. Those are the two bulletpoints I value most in a book. So I found the reading experience overall slow and uneventful. To be fair, how much of that was because I anticipated most of the major twists due to pre-existing knowledge gained from the movies and internet memes.
The prose is beautiful and varied, and the words depicted a colorful world and practically drowned me in its histories and lore. Some (a lot) of it unfortunately are not great experiences on audiobook. Though I have to admit I quite enjoyed Rob Inglis's singing!!
I fully intend to come back and reread the book at a more leisure pace and I suspect I will enjoy it much more the second time around.
