I always was a giant fan of Lord of the Rings, ever since I got my hands on a copy of The Hobbit only to find out there was more to the story.  I never owned a true copy of Lord of the Rings until now and this book does not disappoint.  It is beautiful and extremely well made.  This Leather Bound edition is truly the One Book to Rule them All!!

The Leather Bound 50th Anniversary edition of Lord of the Rings might be fairly expensive compared to the simple hard-cover edition, but it makes up for it in style.

- Leather Bound book cover and Leather bound storage case (it feels like 'faux' leather to me however).  The leather isn't pitch black like the default image shows, and appears blueish if you try to photograph it.  The Leather my edition came with has this nice Black Ash look to it. Imagine black with some ash gently brushed into it.

- Pages are gold edged, and are extremely reflective.  The pages themselves feel heavy duty and smooth to the touch. Also included are 3 pages from the Book of Mazarbul on laminated pages. Although I found the pictures a tad dark, it makes for a nice collective piece of Tolkien art.

- The leafing on the leather itself is high quality and clearly  meant to last

The included maps are beautiful, as is the addition of red text throughout the book on key elements (such as the writings on the ring) is a nice touch.  Included is a lovely red ribbon that is smooth and high quality.  It is bound to the book inside the binding itself.  With the entire story printed under one cover this book comes in at about 4 lbs

**
Overall this is a must have for the Lord of the Rings fan whom has always wanted a single print edition of the book.  There have been over 400 corrections made which makes this book the most accurate print version to date.  For the collector the [Leather Bound] version is worth the price!  High quality and just beautiful workmanship was put into this book.  For the casual fan, perhaps the standard hardcover edition would be enough and saves you some $ in the process.

* A few warnings to be aware of with the Leather Bound edition.
1- Check your binding!  The ribbon itself is bound to the binding itself.  My edition had the ribbon bound in the "middle" of the book and the binding was flawless. Reading around it appears versions where the ribbon was bound towards the beginning or end of the binding itself caused the binding to "weaken". (there are even user pictures showing this above)
2- This isn't a 100% solid leather covering.  It is just leather wrapped around a standard hardcover frame. (you can tell because the leather itself isn't attached to the book at the spine)
3- The Maps are attached / bound to the book so don't quickly yank on them or they will rip.  Be very careful when opening them also as they used adhesive to hold it closed (no idea why they would glue it closed)

Addendum January 2008:

Let me say that while there may be finer editions (the 2000 HarperCollins black leather/india paper (now over $300US) and the 2004 UK 50th Anniversary HarperCollins edition (still in print, but over $150US where available), this US 50th Anniversary edition is easily the best edition in print in the US. Despite some complaints and comments by other reviewers to the contrary, this book is in fact leather bound. Many readers will have only had experience with a style of leather binding now rare (calfskin or morocco leather) that was quite heavy and very expensive. As an amateur bookbinder, typesetter, and papermaker who has studied with John Risseuw and others, I can say with absolute confidence that the binding on this edition is a type of elegant, thin leather formerly much used, known as "bonded leather", it is infact and deed: leather.

Having set that issue to rest, let me also say that the other design and manufacturing consideration of the edition are first rate. I should say it would be a bargain of it were just cloth bound, and it should occupy a place of pride in anyone's library, and become a suitable heirloom. Have no fear if you are looking for the best in-print edition of LOTR. You will get it with this one.

Two fine points. If you prefer an illustrated edition, perhaps the Centenary one-volume edition illustrated by Alan Lee is more suitable. No slipcase, a cloth binding, and the text, unlike this edition, does not reflect the most recent corrections (this and the lower priced 50th Anniversary "Standard" edition are the only editions in the US which do). Also, this edition is sometimes confused with an earlier commemorative published around 2000-2001 from Houghton Mifflin that was famously defective in its production, with missing or torn pages, improperly sewn or bound pages and signatures, and all around sloppy construction. They sound and look similar, but always check the ISBN and be sure that you are looking at the correct edition (which should have a preface by Wayne G. Hammond regarding the text corrections). This edition, whatever other opinions may be, has had no such manufacturing problems, and is for the moment the definitive text of LOTR.

July 2007:
Beware that many of the reviews posted here for this edition do appear to actually refer to another, slightly earlier edition that was defective. While I can't provide ISBN numbers, there was another commemorative edition published shortly before this one (and which was also slipcased in a black leather binding with gilt edges) that of a limited edition of 1500 copies, 1100 were recalled by the publisher due to defects in the binding and assembly, specifically the problems listed here of bad cutting and gluing etc. This edition here is that which was brought out to replace it. It contains the Mazarbul paintings and different cover art from the earlier one, and can be distinguished from it on this basis at least. I bought my copy from Amazon last year and it is perfect. I have examined at least 3 other new copies at bookstores and each of those was also as it should be. I have also seen a used copy of the earlier defective and it is clearly not the same edition, though I imagine it will become valuable due to scarcity in time (only 400 copies extant, at the most)

Having said this, and while I recommend this edition without reservation, it is not the most lavish or expensive edition ever printed. It does contain the definitive corrected text according to Christopher Tolkien and the Tolkien Estate, though the Folio Society ($175) and Easton Press ($295)  both publish editions which are much more expensive, and there are and have been numerous other leather (quarter to full-bound) and full-bound cloth, slipcased (paper, cloth, leather), gilt-edged, illustrated or engraved (various), hubbed, deckled, and otherwise "deluxe" multi- and single-volume editions of LOTR over the years.

Still, with the possible exception of the British HarperCollins 50th anniversary edition (which is a complete seperate book design [and unique ISBN]: covers, case, color scheme, exterior markings, type, etc.) I do think this is an elegant, beautiful book. The color, the choice of foil stamped images (and the stamping quality itself), the inclusion of Tolkien's own artwork (and the particular choices there), the paper, type, ink, and other elements each and all combine to produce an outstanding book-object. I believe Tolkien would be most pleased with it, on its own merit and compared to all the other editions currently in print.

~~~*手触りの良い革張りの表紙とケース。
*表紙にはトールキン教授による一つの指輪と、三つの指輪のデザインが、二色の箔押しで描かれています。
*ページの側面と上下は金箔で彩られており、本文を見る前には先ずページを横に倒したりして剥がします、この作業だけでも本が多少膨らんでしまいケースに入りにくくなってしまいますが、なんとか入ります~~。
装丁の豪華さは本棚の置物になっても良いかもしれませんが、この本はそれだけではありません。
*テキスト全体の見直しがされてあり、校正を新たにArtist&Illustratorで定評のあるハモンド、スカル夫妻が担当し、今までで一番すばらしい版に仕上がっている。
*そして特筆すべきは、間に教授自身の描いたマザルブルの書片がカラーで3P挿入されていることで~~す、軽く見た所前後には英訳が載っている様子はありませんでしたが、出版当初、教授はこれを挿絵として使いたがっていた(でも予算の都合で出来なかった)と聞き及んでおりますので、きっと教授も喜ばれると思います。
*中つ国とゴンドールからモルドール近郊の地図が、二色刷り、A3程度の大きさで挟み込まれています。
*追補編のホビットの家系図に新~~たにボルジャー家とボフィン家の家系図が加わっております。
一冊に「旅の仲間」から「追補編」までの全てを納めているので、少々重たいですが、マニアにもお勧めの一冊だと思います。
これから原書で読みたいという方にもオススメです。~~~
Zu The Lord of the Rings muss man ja nichts mehr sagen - wenn man Fantasy mag ist das Buch einfach 5 Sterne wert, dazu noch der historische Wert...
Wer eine gediegene englische Ausgabe sucht und wie ich an der Papier- und Druckqualität der englischen Taschenbücher verzweifelt (wir sind da bei den deutschen Taschenbüchern wirklich verwöhnt denke ich) wird sich an dieser Ausgabe erfreuen.
Ledereinband, 2 grosse Faltkarten vorn und hinten (die auch das einzige kleine Manko dieser Ausgabe beinhalten - die Karten sind bei der Produktion mit diesem abpellbaren Kleber an den Ecken fixiert worden, leider ging der Kleber nicht so gut ab wie er sollte...), Zweifarbdruck im Text und in den Karten, Lesebändchen, Goldschnitt - alles was das Herz begehrt.
A bit disappointed with the paper quality. Outside cover and casing is great, but the pages are thin, almost translucent. This book is meant to sit on the shelf, not to be read.
