These books engendered my love of fantasy and it is easy to say that my life would be very different without that. It is the archetypal high fantasy. The Hero's Journey in almost pure form. In the modern era the style of writing may seem archaic but there is so much detail in it. A complex and interesting world built upon a history and mythology that feels as strong (or stronger in some cases) than real world counterparts.

Okay, I'm going to be rather liberal with the profanity here. LOTR five stars?? Are you people fucking serious?! I've had more entertaining toothaches! The writing is truly appalling. The plot - if you can call some idiot marching across fields and swamps to drop a fucking ring in a volcano a plot - is tedious beyond all definitions of the word. The characters are bland and uninspiring; the dialogue stilted, wooden and ridiculously convoluted. The excessive descriptions make me want to scream until I'm hoarse. I don't need six pages to tell me what a fucking forest looks like. The exposition is a joke; random snippets of Middle-Earth history seemingly deposited at random intervals for no other purpose than pure self indulgence. And the pacing of the wretched thing: It's so slow it's a wonder Frodo managed to drag his candy ass to Mount Doom without collapsing into a boredom induced coma. This book is crap. If you value your youth and sanity, avoid it at all costs!

Leggere Il Signore degli Anelli ad alcuni sembra un'impresa impossibile, vuoi per la mole decisamente ingombrante,vuoi per il tipo di scrittura,ma vi assicuro che la vera impresa è tentare di recensirlo!
Quando ho iniziato a leggerlo l'unica cosa a cui riuscivo a pensare era perchè non l'avevo letto prima, questo romanzo è "Il Libro"!
Non credo ci sia bisogno di riassumere la trama, tutti sommariamente sanno di cosa si parla,grazie anche ai film basati sul romanzo,quindi direi di iniziare così...

L'anello da cui tutto parte e che scatena gli eventi devastanti che portano tutte le razze della Terra di Mezza a unirsi per combattere l'Oscuro Sire di Mordor.
Elfi, Nani, Uomini e Hobbit uniti contro l'Ombra. Al centro della vicenda proprio gli Hobbit, questi piccoli esseri che possono essere scambiati per bambini, ma provvisti di tanto coraggio e dignità. E proprio a Frodo, Hobbit della Contea, sarà affidato il compito di distruggere l'Anello gettandolo nella lava del Monte Fato. Insieme a lui una compagnia eterogenea composta da altri tre Hobbit, Sam, Merry e Pipino, da Gandalf il Grigio, dal Ramingo Aragorn, dall'elfo Legolas, dal nano Gimli e da Boromir di Gondor.
La Compagnia dell'Anello inizia il suo viaggio animata dalla speranza, ma fin troppo presto le trappole di Sauron li mettono a dura prova...
Il romanzo si divide in tre parti e le vicende e i personaggi che si alternano tra le pagine sono così tanti da rendere questo romanzo una vera e propria epopea fantasy!
Sulla trama c'è davvero poco da dire, ma devo assolutamente spendere qualche parola per l'autore, Tolkien era un genio! Ha creato tutto un mondo dove ambientare la sua storia e non ha tralasciato nulla. Oltre alla storia principale anche il background è estremamente dettagliato, l'ambientazione, i personaggi e le loro discendenze, ogni cosa è perfettamente studiata per dare l'impressione al lettore di non star semplicemente leggendo una storia, ma piuttosto di essere entrati in un altro mondo!
Inoltre ho trovato lo stile di Tolkien per nulla pesante, anzi è poetico, magico e fa delle descrizioni talmente belle da permettere a chi le legge di vedere esattamente quel che lui stava immaginando mentre scriveva!
Le oltre 1000 pagine sono letteralmente volate via, per me è stato impossibile mettere giù il libro nonostante avessi già visto svariate volte i film, film che io ho apprezzato moltissimo, anche se solamente adesso, dopo aver letto il libro, mi rendo conto quanto poco mostrino della Terra di Mezzo.
I personaggi sono molto più complessi e dettagliati. I veri protagonisti della storia sono gli Hobbit che, piccoli piccoli, compiono gradi imprese divenendo eroi e mostrando a tutti che non sono l'altezza o le dimensioni a fare il coraggio di una persona!
Frodo con le sue insicurezze e gli alti e bassi nel ruolo di Portatore dell'Anello è contrapposto al coraggioso Sam, lui che partito come il più timido dei quattro Hobbit diventa invece la forza di Frodo, colui che lo aiuta a portare a termine la sua missione. Una volta letta tutta la storia si realizza che senza Sam Frodo avrebbe fatto poco...
Gli altri personaggi, elfi,nani,uomini, sono tutti perfettamente caratterizzati. Ritroviamo il ramingo Aragorn divenuto Re, l'insostituibile Gandalf, la meravigliosa amicizia tra Gimli e Legolas, il coraggio di Eomer, la forza di Eowyn e le battute di Merry e Pipino.
E' impossibile non affezionarsi alla storia e ai personaggi, nonostante già sapessi come sarebbe andata a finire mi sono ritrovata a fare il tifo per Frodo e Sam, a sperare in Aragorn, ad ammirare i coraggiosi Cavalieri di Rohan e a sospirare di tristezza all'addio ai Porti Grigi...
Non ho letto solo un libro, ho fatto un vero viaggio nella Terra di Mezzo! Ho viaggiato con la Compagnia tra paludi e montagne,ho visto la bellezza di Lothlòrien, ho accompagnato Frodo su per la scala infinita, ho combattuto accanto a Eomer e i suoi Rohirrim, ho visto Aragorn diventare Re Elessar e ho visto salpare le ultime navi dai Porti Grigi...

Non dimenticherò facilmente quest'avventura, quello di Tolkien è uno di quei libri che lasciano un segno profondo, perchè oltre la storia, oltre le righe ci sono messaggi di speranza, ci sono il vero amore e la leale amicizia!Un romanzo indimenticabile, una lettura imperdibile!

Nema smisla puno pričati. Gospodar Prstenova je roman koji je zacementiran na svojoj poziciji klasika, i u žanru i van njega, i to sa valjanim razlogom. Iako jeste svakako malo lošije omatereo - nije više to ta griva kose, plus hoda malčice nakrivo pa mu džaba što je visok 2m - što se najviše ogleda u uštogljenom dijalogu, ovo je i dalje potpuno fascinantno štivo sa više tačaka gledišta, ali ona glavna, sa koje se vide sve ostale, svakako je svet. Jer Srednja Zemlja ima potporu bar koliko i ova naša (ako se pravimo da to nisu dve iste zemlje – kao što sam Tolkin reče, „Srednja Zemlja je ništa drugo do naša matična planeta – ali u drugoj eri mašte“), što je upravo ono što isparava sa stranice. I ono što toliko opija.

Prvi put sam pročitao Gospodara u petom osnovne, dakle sa circa 20% razumevanja, pa iako nikad ikad nisam čitao ponovo već pročitane knjige (greota, kad ih je toliko različitih) još od doba dnevne konzumacije Hari Potera, ovu sam morao. I svašta sam novo otkrio. Elem, u crticama:

- sećam se da mi se ranije nimalo nije dopadalo što su knjige podeljene po principu frodo+sem – ostali, ali sada mi je zapanjujuće lepo leglo; lepše je provoditi duže vreme sa jednim asortimanom likova, bez ’cik cak nabijam tenziju’ mahinacija, bar za ovu vrstu priče

- mislim da se Tolkinu premalo počasti odaje kada je reč o karakterizaciji: Frodo je potpuno tragičan junak; Gandalf je neverovatna skladna kombinacija nespojivog - autoriteta i harizme; Teoden je ono što čini ljude dobrim; Meri i Pipin su šegačije sa dušom ispod one-liner-a; a Gimli možda ima i najveće srce – a svakako najviše voli (Galadriel+Gimli je ono što su svi hteli da vide, a ne Aragorn+Aruen); jedino što mi je Aragorn tu malo mršav, tojest nije mršav jer onda ne bi bio savršen, ali svakako mi se više dopada karakterizacija nevoljnog kralja (koja je u knjigama očito izvorno Frodova – nevoljnog junaka, dok je u filmovima karton koji se prenemaže i ima lik Ilajdže Vuda) nego savršenog kralja, ali što je tu je

- takodje, Tolkin ume da izvuče emociju na skoro pa nimalo sentimentalan način, nešto što je izbledelo sa vremenom; danas je gotovo sve sentiš do bola

- prava kulminacija trilogije je, sasvim zaslužno, povratak hobita u Okrug

- razlika izmedju filmova i knjiga čini mi se da je u fokusu – gde se film fokusira na akciju, u knjizi je ona neretko nabijena u paragraf; Tolkin je više zainteresovan da oživi svet koji naseljavaju njegovi junaci na svaki mogući način i to nikad ne davi

- vrlo me je iznenadila količina referenci na Silmarilion kojih se, sasvim logično s obzirom da onomad još nisam znao ni za postojanje istog kao knjige, nimalo ne sećam

- ne znam šta više da kažem, ali evo još jedna crtica: knjiga se manjeviše završava tako što Gandalf ide da popuši koju lulu sa Bombadilom

I tako. Jedno poglavlje u mom životu, ponovljeno. Može se reći i – zasluženo.

I loved returning to Middle-Earth <3
Everything is so lovingly crafted in The Lord of the Rings and has such background and history, like a perfect clockwork.
Some random observations per book below, if one has never read the books or seen the movie don't dive in.

Prologue:
- Interesting how the prologue is an info dump on hobbits and smoking, far from a traditional setup of a large adventure
- The last prologue says a lot about the fourth age, and sons of characters we well known from LotR

Book 1:
- How old do hobbits become normally that 33 is the threshold of adulthood?
- 22 september is Bilbo/Frodo day!
- If that’s queer, we could do with a bit more queerness in these parts

I have read the Lord of the Rings at least a dozen times. I then started reading several translations (German, Norwegian, Portuguese, and French). Apart from English, those are the languages I can read more or less fluently. However, I could probably read the Lord of the Rings in a language I am not so familiar with, since I know the story almost by heart. I am not usually a great re-reader, nor do I generally read fantasy, it’s just this book, which has become somewhat of a safety blanket. My favourite chapters are at the very beginning and the end: leaving and coming home to the Shire.

Best read ever.

I read Lord of the Rings first when I was about eleven or so, and then stayed up all night at a hip boy/girl party in the bathroom with Nathan O. ... talking about ents and elves and whether Tom Bombadil was God. Yes, I was a geeky child. However, all these years later, the story has stuck with me.

First a warning: Don't read Tolkien if you don't appreciate true-omnicient-narrator-style epics. Tolkien isn't a master character builder: he leaves all that to the reader's imagination. The agony in the Aragorn/Arwen romance -- so blatant and operatic in the movies -- was a longing look on Strider's face at Rivendell, an odd comment from Bilbo, and a short no-nonsense Appendix. As with many of the themes in this work, the romance and deep character relationships must be picked from between the lines.

And there is so much between the lines here. The world of Middle-earth lives, utterly lives. Instead of tugging on what-ifs, this fantasy forces readers to imagine. Tolkien's work is the fullest realization of literary world building ever penned.

It is also sophisticated writing, drawing on older forms (epic, romance, tragedy). Tolkien doesn't waste time writing snappy dialogue: the story is too epic to dwindle to individual persons. However, voice shifts subtly depending on point of view: chapters dealing with hobbits contain much more dialogue and detail; chapters dealing with Rohirrim have a poetic rhythm reminiscent of extant Middle English works; chapters dealing with elves are magic and blurry and hard to wrap a mind around. These shifts in style, far from being a novice writer's oops, are intentional and serve as mass characterisation of races and groups. So, what Tolkien foregoes in terms of dialogue he replaces with style and action: a classic example of show not tell.

Having just spouted all that praise, I have to admit that all the criticisms are true: the story does resound with Luddite anti-industrial metaphors, overt Christian themes of salvation and spirit, a structural decision to include songs that doesn't quite work, and fantasy tropes that are now cliche ... now that everyone else has copied them, that is. The thing to remember is that this book started the genre: everything fantasy, from Philip Pullman to George RR Martin, exists in the shadow of this opus.

So, no, it isn't a popcorn read. Get over it. If you invest the time and spirit to read this work, you will be glad you did.

No, I never finished this set of books. Truth be told, I can't - they're awful and horribly written. For me I found the author to be self indulgent in his writing. I know many people are impressed that he made up the languages, races , the lands, etc... quite frankly, big deal. Star Trek did it, as did Star Wars. I realize that many many people say without this book we would not have modern Dungeons & Dragons style books, games and the many spin offs.

Again, I disagree.

Just because Tolkien did it first doesn't mean he did it best. There are many many prolific fantasy writers out there that have written better books.

The book is a thousand page walk to a volcano to toss in a ring that corrupts pretty much everyone that holds it. During our walk through the various lands we hear Frodo whine - for a thousand pages. I'm not worthy, I can't do it, it's too much, blah blah blah. Sam is there to lift his spirits and sometimes, literally Frodo for the duration.

Doesn't this just sound delightful?

I don't.

Everyone is known by multiple names depending on who they encounter, which I found hard to follow as it was hard to keep the characters straight who were related since their names were variations on each others. Boromir, Faramir, and Steve. There's Eomer, Eowyn, and Beth.

You get the idea.

99% of you out there will strongly disagree with me, and that's fine. I still think this book is just dull, boring and just a plain old waste of time. There are many other great, fun, fantasy novels out there that you should try instead.
