5* Given to this as a dramatisation only
I throughly enjoyed listening to it, ignoring the book. However, I would feel unfair if I didn't point out the differences from the book as given at Tolkein Gateway
The script by Brian Sibley and Michael Bakewell attempts to be as faithful as possible to the original novels, but there are some errors and alterations. They include:
• At one point, Minas Anor and Minas Tirith are referred to as though they were separate cities; these are merely alternate names for the same city.
• Part of the Battle of Pelennor Fields sequence is described in song by an opera-style vocalist rather than acted, which may distance some listeners from the action. Others may find the kinship between the sequence and Eddic style of storytelling interesting.
• The journey through Drúadan Forest and the subsequent alliance with Ghân-buri-Ghân's wild men, or "woses" is removed from the radio drama.
• Quickbeam the Ent does not appear in the story.
• Gildor Inglorion does not appear in the story.
• The radio serial omits the sequence in the book in which the hobbits visit with Tom Bombadil. However, in doing so, the Hobbits are never shown to receive their swords from the Barrow-downs and so it remained a mystery how the Witch-king was able to be so wounded

Background: The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by English philologist and University of Oxford professor J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 children's fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War 2 . It is the third best-selling novel ever written, with over 150 million copies sold.

(Warning: Spoiler Alert!)
"The Lord of the Rings" is the greatest trilogy, and it immortalized the name of its creator. It consists of three parts: " The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King". The plot is based on the struggle for the Ring of Power, which was forged by Sauron, the Dark Lord, long long ago. Long before the events of the novel, the Dark Lord Sauron forges the One Ring to dominate the other Rings of Power and corrupt those who wear them: the leaders of Men, Elves and Dwarves. He is vanquished in battle by an alliance of Elves and Men. Isildur cuts the One Ring from Sauron's finger, claiming it as an heirloom for his line, and Sauron loses his physical form. Isildur is later ambushed and killed by Orcs, and the Ring is lost in the River Anduin. Over two thousand years later, the Ring is found by 2 hobbits one of them :Sméagol, immediately falls under the Ring's spell. Sméagol is banished and hides under the Misty Mountains, where the Ring extends his lifespan and transforms him over the course of hundreds of years into a twisted, corrupted creature called Gollum. He loses the Ring, his precious, and, as recounted in The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins finds it.
The 1st book “The Fellowship of the Ring", is one of the best books I’ve ever read. When you’re reading it you just falling in this time and you’re living with them every second. This book need time but it worth it!
I totally agree with author because I really love the way he shows us how pretty , interesting & dangerous magic world is! I love in this book everything : from names of characters to their adventures!

This book gives us a chance to imagine how peaceful world can be without evil things. It helps an adult become a child for a minute and believe in a fairy tail ! It helps a child to find out what is good and what is bad…

This book helped me realize that we need to try to make our life’s more peaceful and to don’t be mean to each other! Also it helped me to understand that sometimes we can be under pressure of something but we need to stay ourselves !

The Hobbit has been a favorite since I was 11 years old and the first book I gave as gifts. Such a wonderful introduction to the masterpiece of the trilogy and Tolkien's other works.

Well, that was fantastic!
I'm happy I've finally read the book which was basis for 3 great movies.
It is full of descriptions and it brings you to another world. It is one of the books after which I will not be the same.
But still I have some tiny shadow of negative impression for 2 reasons:
1) I didn't get the motivation of characters in some moments. I find it really awkward when in dangerous situation the characters shout 'Elbereth!' and then attack the enemy forces. I consider that strange and I think this is not enough.
2) First 800 (approximately) pages were really difficult to read.
Apart from that everything was fantastic and I really enjoyed the book. And I have a great sense of achievement as I managed to read it though it is so long!

Given that Tolkien did not just invent a world, new creatures and weapons, but invented an actual freaking language, he gets 5 stars from me (I'm sure he was anxiously awaiting my approval). I could do without the 80 pages on tobacco production, but Tolkien wasn't writing a story; he was writing a history of a place that had never existed. I resisted reading them for years as I thought they were a level of dork I was not ready for. Then I saw the first movie and had to know what happened. I'm so happy I did (if I had only seen the movie's incredibly poor tactical decisions I would have thought Tolkien a moron). An incredible work.

Some will shout with joy, others will scream in derision. However, we can all agree on one thing:

It's long.
