This was my very first Hemingway and I loved it! However, I am not sure if it broke me for future Hemingway novels. This one was so perfect in its simpleness. When I got to other Hemingway novels it was almost like there was too much in them - I wanted the basics of this book again. That is not to say that I have not enjoyed his other books, but if I had read the others first and wasn't tempted to compare them to this, I would have rated them higher.

So, if you want to read lots of Hemingway, maybe don't start here. I would suggest probably A Farewell to Arms followed by The Sun Also Rises (I don't think I would recommend For Whom the Bell Tolls until you were sure you are into Hemingway)

If you have always thought about reading Hemingway and you just want a taste with the chance that you may not read more, The Old Man and the Sea is a perfect place to start!

هذا العمل أحببته جدًا – رغم أن الكثير يشعر تجاهه بملل – وسبب حبي له حيث أني ولدت بالقرب من البحر ولم أعرف الكثير عن العالم الآخر أول سنواتي سوى البحر ورائحته، ولهذا أعرف جيدًا ماذا يعني تجمّع هذه الثلاثية (صياد / سمكة / وقت) في البدء يعوّل الأول على الثاني وثانيًا يستنفد الثاني، السمكة كل مالديه من الثالث، الوقت. لكن يأتي دون حسبان لكل ماسبق عامل الخبرة الذي يحتاج أن يعي حجم الصبر وأجد في عملية الصيد ثم تلاقي وليس تشابه بين الوقت والخبر. هذا مالعب عليه (همنجواي) في هذه الرواية.

تمثل الرواية حالة صراع بين الإنسان وبين الحياة / القدر / الجوع / الفقر / الطبيعة .

الرواية بها ثيمة وحيدة هي الصبر، ومع الصبر يأتي التحدي والرغبة. فقد جاء همنجواي من خلفية الحرب العالمية الثانية (1938 – 1945م) هذه الحرب مع الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية التي لعب محورًا أساسًا في سردياته الكتابية وتأثيرها الواضح من حيث ذلك التخوف وإنتظار المجهول والخوف من المصير الذي يعقبه كثيرًا بعد الصبر ثمرة كل هذا أما الفوز أو الخسارة.

دومًا الصبر هو صديق مقرب للفقر..

يضرب لنا العجوز سنتياجو مثالًا يحتدى به في الصبر. لك أن تتخيل طوال النص - مع قصره - لاشيئ غير صياد عجوز بائس فقير وسمكة كبيرة يحلم بها في تنافسية غاشمة ضد عدو بحري كبير، القرش. مراوغة وعناد وتحدي وصبر وألم وأمنيات، وكلما تظن أن النهاية أقتربت يأخذك همنجواي لأبعد مما تتخيل. فالموضوع ليس معقدًا من ناحية تخصيص الفكرة فهو عبارة عن عجوز يحاول صيد سمكة بالكثير من المثابرة والصبر وكفى. لكن الوصف.. هو ذا، الوصف. رغم أني ذكرت أن (الملل) هذا اللعين عدو القراءة الطلقة يصيبك لأن السمكة عنيدة والطبيعة ليست سهلة والقرش يريد وجبة جاهزة والتكرارية في الفعل مستمرة لهذا يدخل الملل لكن سنتايجو لم يمل!! (وهو عطف على مثابرة المواطن الأمريكي) فلماذا أنا القارئ أكمل هذا الملل؟ وهنا يأتي دور تطويع الثراء اللغوي في خدمة الفكرة.

لم يكن النص يحتاج تكنيك وحبكة قوية فبساطته أحدثت ملازمة النص لنسبة سرد وصفي لا أكثر. رغم نجاح حبكة العمل – رغم بساطته – لكن ماهو أعظم كان هذا النقل المباشر للمشهد وكأنك في خضم المعركة والمنازلة، وكذلك يلعب المونولوج دورًا هامًا في خدمة النص فلم يكن برفقة الشيخ غير البحر والمركب وسمكة وقرش فتكثف الحوار الداخلي بنسبة عاليًا لإفتقار الحدث للإنسان الأخر ليس غير العجوز.

فاصلة
أعتقد أن الرواية حصدت جائزة (بوليتزر) بطريقة مباشرة ولكن (نوبل) أظنها كانت في مجمل أعماله ولو منح نوبل فقط لهذا العمل بعينه فهو يستحق.

كلما تذكرت الرواية يظهر أمامي شخصية أنتوني كوين بقميصه مفتوح الأزرار ولونه الذي لفحته الشمس وصهدته جيدًا في دور الصياد عن فيلمه الذي أخذ مادته من رواية همنجواي.

Ernest Hemingway is considered one of the masters of American 20th century fiction. Garnering from his life experiences, his novels reflect on his time as a newspaper reporter and correspondent in a Europe during both the inner war and war years. A member of the lost generation, Hemingway was the first of his group to have a major work published. In addition to all of the accolades bestowed upon him, Hemingway is considered along Steinbeck to be a master storyteller, especially of short stories. The crowning achievement to an illustrious career, The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1952, less than ten years before Hemingway's death.

Santiago is an older fisherman in Havana. He is content fishing and contemplating on his life while finding out the daily baseball scores. His favorite ball player is Joe DiMaggio because his father was a famed fisherman. As a younger man, Santiago was considered the strongest man in Havana, one time outlasting a negro from Cienfuegos in a twenty four hour arm wrestling duel. Yet, despite his fame and accomplishments as a fisherman, Santiago's luck has run out on hm. As an older man, her needs help from a boy to complete his daily fishing hauls and tasks, and has not caught a fish in 84 days. In spite of this run of poor luck, Santiago still returns to the seas on a daily basis, hopeful to catch the big fish that has alluded him for his entire life.

Because of lack of successes, his boy has turned to another, lucky fishing boat. Santiago has to go at it alone, with only two fishing lines and baits. Determined to catch that big one, he sets out even with the dangers of sea, especially sharks, knowing that each journey into the water could be his last. Yet, this is subsistence and sustenance for many people on an island, so Santiago persists at his task. His voyage for the big fish becomes more than a fishing trip but his contemplating life, bestowing his wisdom on both the fishing trade and life knowledge on the younger generations. This is without the assurance that he will even catch a fish or if this determination to catch the big one will be his last voyage.

From this 120 page novella, one can see glimpses of Hemingway's greatness. His sentences are full of imagery and imparting the wisdom of a rich life. As an older man, he himself enjoyed fishing and Santiago mirrors how Hemingway spent his later life. I have read a number of Pulitzers, and while the writing of this novella is enriching, I am left wondering if perhaps Hemingway won the award here as a crowning jewel on his life body of work. The story was captivating and full of messages yet a novella, rather than a novel. Perhaps, unbeknownst to me, this powerful novella was the best work of fiction in its given year and worthy of the award.

In my quest to read the Pulitzers, I am glad that I was finally lead to read Hemingway. It is clear to me that he is a master of his craft, and I look forward to reading his further work. The Old Man and the Sea looks back on an enriching life and won Hemingway a deserving award, if not for his lifetime of writing. As a lovely story and another Pulitzer I can check off my list, The Old Man and the Sea rates 4 powerful stars.

كثيرة هي الروايات التي تغنّت بتحصيل الأحلام واقتناصها ، لكنّها قلّة تلك التي واصلت الحكاية من حيث يتحول الحلم إلى محنة .
الأحلام ، هذه اللفظة الأثيرية التي داعبت خيال البشر منذ غابر الأزمنة ، قد تمر بالقلب بأرق ما تمر به أوراق الورد الناعمة ، و لكن يا لقسوتها حين تنغرز كالشوكة في سويدائه !.



من الأفضل أن يكون الإنسان محظوظاً ، ولكني أؤثر اذا عملت عملاً أن أتقنه ، حينئذٍ ، اذا جاء الحظ يكون المرء متأهباً لاستقباله ..


سانتياجو ، صياد عجوز ، كان له في حياته نصيب من الأحلام المُحقَقَة و الأيام الظافرة ، نسيج من الذكريات السعيدة لأناسٍ مضوا ، و لأنّ دأب الإنسان أن يحلم ، ظلّ طيف الصيد الكبير يغازل جفنيّ هذا العجوز لمدة لا بأس بها من الزمن ، هو الذي لم يعد يملك من القوة إلا قوة عزيمته ، و من الثقة إلا إيمان الصبي مانولين به و بقدراته كصيّاد مخضرم .



و لأنّ الحلم يدفع بالإنسان إلى حدود لم ترتسم في باله مطلقاً ، يتوغل صيادنا العجوز بعيداً في المحيط حيث لم تصل مركب صيادٍ قبله ، ينصب شراكه و يتحيّن الفرصة ، و حين يجذب طُعمه أضخم سمكة قابلها في حياته ، يظن الصياد أن بشائر أحلامه قد هلّت ، فيقاتل في سبيل صيّده الثمين ، و يصارع سمكته صراع الندّ للندّ ، يكرُّ و يفرّ ، يهادنُ و يهاجم ، يتوحد مع سمكته في منافسة نبيلة غير آبهٍ بما يبذله في سبيلها من ألم و جهد و طاقة ذهنية وبدنية هائلة .



و مَن قال أنّ بالظَفر ينتهي الحلم؟ ، في بعض الأحيان الظَفر بالشيء هو بداية جولة جديدة من القتال لأجله ، معركة يثبت فيها الإنسان أحقيّته وجدارته بالفوز ، ولعلّها أشرس وأدهى من سابقتها لأنّه يوجد بين يديه الآن ما يمكن خسارته ، و هكذا يظفر صيادنا بسمكته الصخمة لكنّ القروش مثلها مثل نوائب الحياة تأبى إلا أنّ تقوض الأحلام وتفترسها ، فيستبسل العجوز بالذود عن سمكته ، و يضحي بالكثير برغم ما يراه من ضمور وتلاشي لجسد أحلامه ، لكن هل يربح الحرب من يفقد سلاحه !؟



قد يتحطم الرجل ، لكنه لا يُهزم ...


واذا ما وضعنا أنفسنا موقع الصياد ، و أهدافنا موضع صيّده ، و من آمنوا بنا موقع صبيّه ، و حياتنا ومفاجآتها موضع البحر وتقلباته ، و التحديات والعقبات مكان القروش المفترسة .... ، فنجد أن حكاية هيمنجواي مثلها مثل ثوبٍ سبق لنا أن ارتديناه مراراً .


ما يميز الرواية في نظري :

• أنها ليست حكاية عن الأحلام التي لها أجنحة ، بل عن تلك التي تمتلك مخالب ، فما أسهل أن تكتب عن حلم تم تحقيقه ، ولكن ما أصعب أن تكتب عن الأحلام التي تحولت إلى نوائب!

• واقعيّتها ، فقد نعارك الحياة طويلاً و نخرج من حربنا خالييّ الوفاض .

• النهاية التي جعلت من الخيّبة خبرة ، و من الخبرة بذرة لأمل جديد ، و أظن هذه النهاية لوحدها تستحق ٥ نجوم و جائزة نوبل و تربيت طويل على كتف هيمنجواي الذي سطرها وهو يلوذ بأحضان الكآبة .


من السذاجة والحماقة أن يفقد المرء الأمل ، هذا بجانب أنني أعتقد أنّ اليأس خطيئة .

You think this is about a lonely, crazy old man having a mental breakdown? Well, yes, it is. But mostly… There was fishing. And more fishing. Oh, and even more fishing! The end.

I found this novel boring, repetitive, and unfulfilling. Hemingway writes about an old man who hunts fish in the sea. The man displays some resilience while staying on his boat. Hemingway touches on themes like life and death, nature, and human/animal relationships. His writing has nothing special about it, other than a dullness others perceive as "concision" or "sparseness." Perhaps I just find it sad that we hype this book up so much for its depiction of strength and courage, when so many better, more complex and interesting books exist that feature characters who overcome homophobia, racism, illness, etc.

Overall, an alright portrayal of perseverance, but nothing more than that. Also, Hemingway avoids portraying women in a sexist way in The Old Man and the Sea - perhaps because he includes no women in this book at all. *insert gif of me sighing*

"يا مارلين، أنا أحبُّك وأحترمُك كثيرًا. ولكني سأقتلك قبل أن ينتهي هذا اليوم."

في هذه الجملة تتلخص الكثير من صراعات الوجود والاستمرار، معاملة العجوز للسمكة كصديق حينًا وكعدو حينًا آخر وصراعه في الوقوف على حكمة الإله من هذا النظام الكوني الذي يجعل هذه السمكة البديعة في معركة لاستمرارها على قيد الحياة، هي معركة وجودية مع الإله في أجزائها الأولى.

طوال الرواية إلى ما قبل القضاء على السمكة نهائيًا كان يراودني شعور بأن السمكة هي من تصطاد العجوز، هو يظن أنه من يتحكم في الأمر ويسوقها كيفما شاء في حين أن السمكة هي من كانت تقود الأمر.
هل الأمر دائر بالفعل حول الشجاعة؟ نعم. هل الشجاعة تجلت في محاربة العجوز للقروش؟ لا.
الشجاعة هنا في الاستمرار على قيد الحياة من البداية، على ملء فراغ العجوز بالصيد.. الشجاعة هنا في الماهية والجوهر للفعل نفسه، لا في الفعل الظاهر بمواجهة القروش.
العجوز والمارلين متشابهان، فما فعلته المارلين مع العجوز من البداية حتى صيدها، يشبه ما فعله العجوز مع القروش حتى النهاية. نهايتهم واحدة.

في تعليق كبار الكتاب والصحف على الرواية يمتدحون الطريقة السردية التي صيغت بها الرواية، وهم محقون بالتأكيد، فاستخدام الطرق السردية المتعددة في الرواية بهذا التمكن والإيجاز والتنقل ما بينهم شيء عظيم.. الرواية العظيمة هي ما تختل إن حذفت منها مشهد أو جزئية بسيطة، وهذا البناء السردي العبقري صعب أن نتخيله مكتوب بغير هذه الطريقة.

I read this book (forcibly) in school and hated it. I thought it was boring and tedious and set it aside never to be picked up again. Well, I did pick it up again, albeit over a decade later, and though my younger self would be deeply disconcerted by my change of heart, I really liked it. There is such feeling in the short book, in the spareness of the story. It's about a man and his fish, but it's also about the changing world and people being left behind, clinging on to what they know because they are afraid otherwise they will drown. It's about identity, and lost dreams and resilience and the constant battle between the world of man and the natural world, even as the old man has a sort of love for the fish he is determined to hunt and kill. I was surprised by how moved I was by this book after having shunned it for for many years, dismissing Hemingway as dry and tedious. Could it be that I was wrong about James Joyce and Nathaniel Hawthorne as well? Doesn't bear contemplating?!
In all seriousness though, I am glad I picked this up again. I suppose the young are not all knowing, all-wise after all;-)

داستان جذابیت خاصی نداشت , هرچند من عاشق ماهیگیری هستم و خب فضای داخل داستانش باعث شد تا انتها روند عادی اش را تحمل کنم و کتاب را بخوانم اما این دلیلی نمیشود بر اینکه بگویم خیلی خوب بود و یا عالی بود ! در عوض یک داستان کاملا متوسط و چه بسا رو به پایین به حساب میامد که انتظارش را نداشتم و فکر میکردم بهتر از این حرف ها باشد که نبود و کتاب را بعد خواندن اخرین صفحه اش با نارضایتی بستم و کنار گذاشتم ... این را هم بگویم که دلم برای پیر مرد داستان سوخت که زحمتش اینطور به هدر رفت و دست تنها این همه سختی کشید و آخرش هم هیچ چیزی دستش را نگرفت به دریا و نیرنگ هایش باخت ...

I hated this book in high school. Despised it with a fiery passion. Swore to never, ever read another Hemingway novel.

I fully intended for this reread to renew my hatred. I'd already planned a snarky review to the effect of “Forget the marlin. Sharks should have eaten Hemingway before he wrote this book and done the world a favor.”

But it turns out I didn't hate it as much this time. Go figure. It's never going to be my favorite novel (or will it? check back in another thirty years to find out!), but, eh, I've read worse.

My heart goes out to anyone who hasn't read this. Hemingway is supreme when he's writing short fiction.

I read this in Highschool (as no doubt many people were forced to as well) and amazingly I loved it. I've read some of Hemingway's other work, and they've all been very hit or miss for me… but this one, this one is something special.

He's one of those authors who I think in real life I couldn't stand, in terms of his writing it often frustrates me, but here it is perfect. How does one write essentially a 100 page story about an old man trying to catch one single fish (yes, yes I know I'm drastically understating what is done here)? I don't know. Hell, I've read this book three times and I still don't know.

Seriously, why the hell does this book work? IT SHOULDN'T AND IT KIND OF ANNOYS ME THAT IT DOES.

When we get right down to it, it works by being a story that can be read on multiple levels; analyzed endlessly and yet leave so much unsaid that every reader can read into it their own ideas. This is one of those books I can return to again and again. It's short enough to read in one sitting, and yet I always notice something new each time. A perfect 5/5
