يشرح ستيڤن هوكينغ هنا النظريات الفيزيائية التي ساهمت في فهم الكون وأصل ما يحدث فيه.. يتقصد في أسلوبه البساطة والسرد بالتفصيل، ليشمل اهتمام غير المختصين أيضًا.

ستيڤن مهووس ببداية الكون ونظرية الإنفجار العظيم، والكتاب يدور حولها. أعجبني أنه بدأ بشرح النظريات من الأساسيات، تكلم عن النظرية النسبية، وتعديلات اينشتاين على قوانين نيوتن بعد اعتبار الزمن كبعد رابع للمكان -ليس كخلفية للأحداث كما اعتبره نيوتن- وطرح بعدها النموذج الرياضي الجديد تمامًا وهو ما يعرف بالنظرية النسبية العامة. يشرح أيضًا نظريات ميكانيكا الكم التي ساعدت في تطور أغلب العلوم بعد ظهورها مثل الكيمياء والبيولوجيا الحديثة والإلكترونات وأساس التكنولوجيا.

This was a very compact version of the physics that surround our universe. Understandable for everyone and highly interesting. I would totally recommend it

The purpose of science is not only to answer the most perplexing questions, but also to arouse curiosity in the mind of the readers about the universe. While many books on science do give valuable information, they fail to achieve the latter purpose, as mentioned earlier. This book however succeeds in achieving both.

The Universe in a Nutshell is considered as a sequel to Hawking's previous bestseller, A Brief History of Time. The book, as the title suggests, discusses about the history and principles of the physical universe, in a nutshell. The topics are discussed in just the fair amount of detail and simplicity, although there are some topics which are just too advanced to understand.

Despite being nearly 2 decades old, the book still holds it value, and readers can give it go if they are curious to know about the universe, but lack lots of free time.

Es el primer libro sobre física que leo completo y sin duda ha sido una gran decisión. He de decir que ha sido probablemente el libro más difícil que me he leído y ha requerido mucha relectura para poder entender ciertos conceptos, pero Stephen Hawking demuestra una capacidad inmensa para hacer comprender a un público más general la magnitud del universo.

Generalmente son los libros de filosofía los que más me hacen pensar y reflexionar cada palabra que leo pero este los ha superado en muchos aspectos aún no siendo un libro que pretenda generarte dudas sino resolverlas. Pero es la propia naturaleza del universo la que te hace replantearte las cuestiones más grandes. Cada capítulo es una reflexión diferente y una explicación fascinante por parte del profesor Hawking sobre aspectos elementales de la física que, te hacen comprender el mundo de una forma completamente filosófica. Las teorías de cuerdas, la mecánica cuántica y todos esos aspectos relacionados te moldean tu forma de entender el entorno y unido a las teorías sobre el tiempo y su funcionamiento en relación al espacio lo complican todo aún más (desde un punto de vista positivo).

Siempre me he considerado ateo (en parte porque mi fascinación por Hawking me hizo copiar su idea sobre la existencia de una divinidad) pero con este libro mis dudas son aún más grandes y a la vez mi rechazo a la existencia de dios más clara, pues la existencia del tiempo en sí mismo es un concepto que escapa el entendimiento humano por como concebimos la idea de espacio-tiempo, pues nos cuesta escapar de un pensamiento tridimensional. No nos paramos a plantear esas cuestiones desde un punto de vista científico, y con razón, porque en general, el público mayoritario no tenemos la capacidad racional para entenderlo.

Sin duda lo que más me ha enganchado y hecho reflexionar del libro es el desarrollo de la teoría de la relatividad general de Einstein y su desafío a la hora de unificarse con la mecánica cuántica (donde es esencial la constante de Planck). Todo eso es básico y a la vez conflictivo para poder entender cómo funciona el espacio-tiempo y la gravedad, algo que sin duda escapa nuestro conocimiento, o al menos por ahora. Puede que la respuesta a todo esté en la singularidad de los agujeros negros, lo que claramente me parece lo más increíble que puede existir en el universo, pues ahí es donde convergen la gravedad, es tiempo y el espacio y nuestras reglas de la física clásica y la mecánica cuántica dejan de tener sentido. Quién sabe si esté ahí la respuesta acerca de la existencia de dios, de la creación del universo, o al menos de la parte que conocemos o de la región temporal que podemos ver y confirmar que ha existido gracias a la radiación de fondo de microondas.

Recomiendo mucho este libro, si te interesa un mínimo la física o el universo aunque hay que tener fuerza de voluntad en muchos momentos para continuar, pues es difícil de entender. Aún así Hawking lo hace posible.

The book is an attempt to explain the nature of the universe using (mainly) String theory. Hawking is making assumptions along the way while discussing problems of quantum gravity, quantum physics and Einstein’s general relativity.
Starting with superstring theory, P-Branes theory and arbitrary time, Hawkins conclude that our universe holds many hidden dimensions impossible for us to observe. The future of computers and genetic engineering could bring us closer to unified theory of everything or maybe this all is a hallucination of the mind?

The most fascinating part for me however was discussion of time. We all think we experience time. In everyday thinking, time is being reduced to a level of an individual- linear perception and chains of recalled mind experiences. And here comes my personal admiration for Hawking trying to discuss universal time while dissolving individual perception of the mind. To say, trying to take a look on the universe with a God’s eye

لن أقول أنني فهمتُ كل ما ذُكر في الكتاب..لا يهم، فقد خرجتُ بأفكارٍ جديدة,,
وتعميق لما كنتُ أعرفه.
على أي حال...إن مثل هذه العلوم، بالنسبة لي أراها، أكبر من يستوعبها عقلي الصغير جداً...ههه وفي كل مرة أتأمل، أسأل نفس السؤال: كيف تمكنوا من ذلك؟!! ما هذا الذي يحصل...؟ وأتوقف على الأسئلة لئلا اصاب بالجنون.
تلفاز من القرن الماضي،يُثيرني،وأقول عنه أنّى لهم هذا... فما بالكم بالكون !! :/

ليس هنالك ما يُسمى سفراً خلال الزمن،، ويحدث في شروط فيزيائية معقدة جداً، احتمال توافرها صفراً !! هذا ما خلصتُ إليه.

يعتقدُ الكاتب أنه مع التطور البيولوجي الالكتروني، ومع الثورة البيولوجية في الDNA .
وأنّ ما استغرقه التطور البيولوجي الطبيعي آلاف بل ملايين السنين،لاحداث طفرة، أصبح بالإمكان حدوثه في المعامل خلا�� سنوات بسيطة..ماذا سيحصل عند ذلك، عند خلق بشر مُحسّنين مستقبلاً؟! لربما يكونوا أكثر قدرة على فهم الكون !!! O.o

في حديثه عن التطور التكنولوجي السريع في أجهزة الحاسوب، يتوقع أنها قد تُضاهي التعقد نفسه الذي يتميز به المخ البشري ذات يوم.
في رأيي،أن هذا بحد ذاته، تطوراً قد يودي بنا نحن البشر،وكأفلام الخيال العلمي نصبح ضحيةً للآلة! لأن الآلة وقت ذاك، ستتمكن من تطوير نفسها بنفسها,, وما حاجتها للبشر !!!!
ويذكرني ذلك، بفيلم "Her"
الذي يعرض فكرة أن يصبح الحاسوب ذو نظام عالي الدقة والتعقيد والتطور، بحيث يستطيع المرء أن يختلق له صديقاً أو حبيباً أو زوجاً...عن طريق شرائه لنظام الحاسوب هذا... وكأنك تتحدث بالهاتف مع صديق لحمي كمثلك !!! :O

في الختام، لطالما حيرتني النظريات المختصة بعلم الكون، وما تؤول إليه من نتائج عقل الإنسان العادي لا يتحملها.. وإذا ما ربطتُ بين العلم وما أعرفه في الدين.. قد أُصاب بجنونٍ لا خلاصَ منه.. وأسأل ماذا بعد؟!!! أين هذا العلم من النصوص الدينية، وإلامَ سنؤول في النهاية؟! .... يُفضل عدم الاسترسال في هذه الأفكار.
....
وبعد الانتهاء من هذا الكتاب، يراودني سؤال.. ماذا سأجدُ في ثقبٍ أسود، لو حدث يوماً،واقتحمته...غير أنني لا يمكنني العودة بتاتاً؟ :D
بصراحة،لا أريدُ المغامرة ولا أطمحُ لها.. فقبرٍ في ترابٍ أرضيٍ، ولا ثقبٍ أسودٍ مجهول الهوية :D
ويبقى التساؤل خيال علمي أصلاً ^_^ على الأقل في وقتنا الحالي.. فما ابعدنا عن أقرب ثقبٍ أسود !!

وينتهي الزمان في ثقبٍ أسود،، كما يقول الكتاب :)

Si se desea colocar una puntuación menor a 5 estrellas, quién lo hace debe demostrar matemáticamente que los modelos de Hawking no son los correctos.
Este es uno de esos libros que probablemente más hablen sobre mecánica cuántica y su funcionamiento. Es fascinante porque es una especie de actualización de una "Historia del tiempo", ya que contempla otras teorías que se han desarrollado posteriormente, tales como la de Teoría M (de las membranas) y sobre los conceptos de Holografía.
Sin perder ese toque lúdico y atrevido, Hawking incluso coloca una ilustración en donde aparece junto con Newton y Einstein, y al final, al ganar su partida de póker, sonríe (proveniente de un episodio de Star Trek: Nueva generación). Algo tiene él que simplemente me apena mucho, creo que es ese recuerdo vago pueril en la niñez de ver a un genio totalmente postrado, con una voz ajena y movimientos más escasos que el de un gato con anestesia. Técnicamente hablando, es un libro que requiere de lecturas similares, de Greene, M. Krauss, o Sagan, ya que, a más de ser cosmólogo, Hawking era un físico teórico, por lo que leerlo vagamente no va a lograr mucho. Indudablemente Hawking, a pesar de pasar en esa silla toda su vida, ha viajado a los más ignotos rincones del universo, tanto clásico como cuántico.

احساس الاستمتاع الي بحسه لما اقرأ شعر من ايام الرسول والصحابة والتابعين وانا مش فاهمه حاجه فيه بس بستمتع بقرأته ,, الكتاب ده حسسني اوي بالاحساس ده :D
انا كنت بقرأه وانا بستمتع بيه شوية افهم وشوية لأ والاغلية لأ بس الفصل الاخير والقبل الاخير وضحلي حاجات كتير مكنتش فهماها .
اهم الحاجات الي انا عرفتها جديدة واستفدتها من الكتاب هى نظرية الاوتار ونظرية الاوتار الفائقة ونظرية ام ونظرية البران , هو لسه في تشويش عندي عنهم يعني :D
ما علينا , في حاجات كنت عارفاها بس عرفاها ك حقائق علمية يقينية , مكنتش اعرف انها تعتبر نظرية ولحد دلوقتي مش عارفه ازا كانت هى نظرية واثبتت صحتها ولا ايه !
الامثلة الي ف الكتاب فكرتني ب حصة ف الكيميا قبل كده ف المدرسة , الميس فضلت تشرح الدرس كله بالامثلة وطلعت م الحصة وانا مش فاهمه حاجه ولا عارفه حاجه ولا عارفه ايه ده ومين دي وهبلتني يعني :D ,
ف الامثلة الي هنا في منها سبّتّ الفهم الي ف دماغي وفي منها الي طيرلي دماغي :V
اكتر حتة شدتني وضحكتني فـ زيادة العدد السكاني وزيادة العلم التكنولوجي وزيادة استهلاك الطاقة لما قال ان بسبب ده هنخلي الكوكب يزداد حرارته ويزداد نوهجه وننور ف الفضاء :D
ولما قال ان زيادة اوراق البحث العلمي هتبقى زي بعدد الالكترون , هما كانوا لسا موصلوش لتعبير بزيادة شعر راسي ؟ :D :D
انا بعد م خلصت الكتاب جتلي نوبة ضحك فعلا معرفش سببها او يمكن هبل او جنون :D
منصحش حد ان ده يكون اول كتاب لحد بدأ يقرأ ف الفلك .

I hate to be controversial, we all love Steven and we all admire him as an inspirational figure and symbol of triumphing over adversity, and of likability and pure intelligence. However......I have a background in science and I have tried to read a brief history of time, a briefer history of time, this book, and brief answers to the big questions; and after much deliberation, I have concluded that it just doesn't make much sense. That is to say, I don't believe that even educated laypeople can really understand these theories in any meaningful or useful way, despite his efforts and skill. I lose the train of logic by halfway in each book and it just turns to gibberish. I can't help but suspect that many people are merely understanding some superficial aspects of his theories and are just content with that; rate it 5 stars and gush about how interesting and important a book it is.

It reminds me a bit of everyone that had business relations with Enron in the year 2000. No one was confident enough to say that their financial deals didn't make sense since Enron was "America's Most Innovative Company" for the last six consecutive years and the executives were the best of the best. So they convinced themselves that they just didn't understand Enrons genius and happily bought in. But in reality, it was all just bullshit.

I like how the book eases the reader into heavier topics (string theory, time 'travel', multiverse) over time, and it does it in a clear and actually graphical way (hence my 4/5, here and there, maybe a bit too much of said graphical content).
Since the book publication, LIGO and LHC produced a number of gravitational, particle discoveries, actually raising some more questions in the process, for supersymmetry, hierarchy question, extension of standard model, but that doesn't diminish anything of its value. On the contrary.
Keep curious.
