As a core these seven books founded the childhood for many generations, taken at face value they are a wonderful collection following a brilliantly painted cast of characters; Stray too far into JK Rowling's hedge of rewrites and sequels however you will find yourself betrayed.

LOVED THEM! The Books were better than the Movies (which I find is ALWAYS the case) but the Movies were well done!

Don’t see how people could still support her honestly. Anyways the books are sexist (any arbitrarily overly feminine girl is automatically put as overly emotional, dumb, annoying, and/or catty), racist (so little POC rep and then they get names like Cho Chang, which is Korean even though the character is Chinese), romanticises slavery (people in the book literally hang house elf heads up as decorations yet the books make it sound as if they want to be house elf’s), and anti-Semitic (what’s up with the goblins?). Also there’s the whole “dumbledore is gay but not really” thing. The whole franchise is just about cash and the books are only as good as any other magical kids series, the main thing it’s got going for it is that there’s 4 houses with basic yet unique enough descriptors to apply to a lot of people but still feel a sense of group identity. A lot of other kids series kinda did this but with more groupings or complexity, and I think that’s why they aren’t as popular. Harry Potter is simple, easy to make into movies and can be read by people who don’t usually read, but long enough to get those who love reading interested.

Thanks to Sarah I now know what all the hype is about. I too understand Harry's struggles, his joys, his fears, his fits of courage and his moments of angst. What I still don't get is who the hell cares? But I would like some credit for giving this a second shot (1st attempt only got me about 1/8 of the way through the audio version, 2nd attempt got me through, what... like 6 books? - true it was only being condensed and re-told for the purposes of understanding the movie but still I feel as though I got the jest).
And I have to admit after seeing the movie (ok seeing about 1/3 of the movie...thanks for letting me drive your car home Sarah) I too am curious: Will the smeglmorfes kill the neecomblobs? Will marfugaloz fall in love and marry whickensob? Can Valkuzelibs good be enough to over come Bagentoo's evil? So many questions left unanswered - I'm practically wetting myself thinking about how all this comes together in volume 9042!

I adored this series - my single complaint was that Harry seems to get into a lot of unecessary rages, which I suppose from one POV I can understand, but it was a little repetitive after a while. However, the plot was exceptionally well done, the humour was spot on and this was one of the few books that has ever had me laughing helplessly out loud, and the entire storyline was amazing. I hate giving negative reviews and this book definitely deserves 5 stars.

One of the stories from my childhood, it still thrills me when I re-read the book. Truly magical.

It's hard to remember Harry Potter too fondly these days, but I loved them as a kid. The writing is decent, the protagonists unremarkable, but there's some interesting side characters like Hagrid and Bellatrix. I think the most attractive part of the series is the setting and lore of the world. It's certainly very detailed - easy to imagine oneself there.
