A somewhat plodding resolution to Foucault's expansive analysis of early Western sexuality. Though still insistent on a severe caesura between the sexual ethics of Rome's Golden age and our own, Foucault starts to lay the common thread that will eventually lead to our age's fixation on the exclusive evils of pleasure.

It starts off with the interpretation of sexual content in dreams in first and second century Europe; and through discussions about double standards in marriage, sexual health, and the dilemma of pederasty, the ideas of self- mastery in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome turns into a self- flagellation which was later turned into law in Christendom. Of note, apparently Epicureans thought that no one was entitled to a wife; whereas Stoics thought that everyone was obliged to.
