This book, originally published in OUP The Past Masters Series, is an excellent survey of the life and thought of Augustine. This Past Masters series presents a biographical, historical and intellectual account of Augustine in one succint, lucid, and well-researched little volume. Chadwick's is a masterfulexample of this genre and any newcomer to this field should read this most readily.

Chadwick presents a survey of the life and work of Augustine and his immediate historical influences. In the process, you get a good, basic introduction to the formation of Augustine's mind by means of the influence of classical authors, Neoplatonism and the commentators of Aristotle, Hellenistic skepticism, and various religious ideas of the time.

Additionally, you'll learn a bit about the early Christian church, and Roman history, particularly how Roman policies affected the geographical areas in which Augustine lived and worked.

Concerning Augustine himself, Chadwick covers not only a number of biographical details, but also details of Augustine's views on knowledge, time, freedom of the will, spiritual conversion and growth, the nature of creation and the Trinity, and other theological views.

This book is aimed at the 'intelligent layman' as well as high-schoolers and undergraduates. The style of writing is a bit more sophisticated than most undergraduates are used to, and that's a good thing. But it's not a difficult read at all, and it pressuposes no philosophical, theological, or historical training from the reader at all. This book is neither a philosophy book, nor a theology book, nor just a history book. It includes aspects of all of these, but is not strictly any one of them.

This book is a very good resource for beginners interested in the following: church history, history of late antiquity and early medieval period, theology, medieval philosophy, and intellectual history.

I close with some succinct remarks by venerable logician and medievalist, John Glanville (Prof. of Philosophy SFSU): "All the main thought elements of Augustine set in the attracively told narrative of a fascinating life."
