"For those who want POWER, watch POWER, or want to arm themselves against POWER."

Wow, this book was intense! I found myself saying “that's so f****d up” multiple times throughout the book! But, I still really enjoyed it! I think the author is a genius for being able to think of 48 different laws and explain them effortlessly.

The layout of the book is my favorite aspect. The author starts each chapter with a short description of the law and then immediately provides historical examples of the consequences of going against it and examples of how it's been used to provide power. Then he goes into further detail and explains its reversal (because not all laws are set in stone; it depends on the situation). I didn’t like all of the red text in the margins because it made it look cluttered and overwhelming. But, overall, it’s a solid book!

There is a lot of controversy around this book because the laws are pretty scummy (lots of backstabbing, manipulation, and deception), but personally, I think it’s really informative. The reality is that these laws have been used in the past and are still being used today by people in power, so why not inform ourselves? That way, we can recognize when these tactics are being used on us.

I knew almost three pages into this that this was written by the same ass hat as The art of Seduction. I really hate this guy! I only kept reading it because I have this neurotic thing about finishing any book I start. I am giving it an extra one star because compared to the other one this one had a better collection of anecdotes and research. Not because it was any good. Just to be clear. He's still a manipulative jerk and I still hate what he stands for. Either way I guess this gives you a bit of an idea about some people!

DNF @3% *I tried to read it again but it's just too disturbing*

My face upon reading all the disturbing things in this book:

This author needs SOME HELP because he's evil. And some of the stuff in here was extremely disturbing.
For example: a creepy quote from the book is "Love and affection are also potentially destructive."
I MEAN WHAT THE HELL!?

It was fun making fun of its creepiness while it lasted, but genuinely sort of boring.

DNF 2%. Decided to still rate it, because the rating is well deserved. I highly doubt the author's opinions or the quality of his insights will suddenly change later on.

Should be called: "48 tips for people with no natural power, on how to gain the semblance of power by tricking other people".

I wasn't surprised to learn the author had worked in Hollywood, because this book is the embodiment of a movie-star's idea of what it means to have power: trick everyone, lie to everyone, do anything and everything for your own superficial gain because morality doesn't exist, and don't worry, this is all very natural and everybody does it anyway.

Hated it from the very beginning, and gave myself the challenge of seeing how much of this book I can go through. I wrote points as I read (well, listened), so this is less of a review and more of a commentary (in order) on the first section of the book.

"Deception and masquerade should not be seen as ugly or immoral. All human interaction requires deception on many levels".

You want to argue that lies and deception are necessary? go ahead. But to claim they aren't immoral? come on.

"In some ways, what separates humans from animals is our ability to lie or deceive."

Has he never watched a nature documentary? Deception is one of the main tactics in the animal kingdom.

He goes to extreme length (to the point of nonsense) to show the reader that his teaching are in line with accepted morality -- but they aren't. Not even close.

I would have admired him more if he didn't pretend to be a moral person. Then again, already in the first 15 minuted of the book he admits he sees so problem with lying...

The very first word on the book's GR page describes it as "Amoral", yet the opening argument of the actual book is about how everything it teaches actually is moral...

He advises you to change your views according to what the situation demands, as part of his idea of "deception". How many of the most powerful men in history acted this way? How many of them spent their time with petty manipulations, changing their ideals to reflect each situation? Many of them obviously used deception, but it was the kind one uses without pretending to be someone they are not.

A little later he quotes Nietzsche, which is a good advice on its own: You want to learn about power? Then you should put down this book, and go read some Nietzsche. First thing you'll notice, is that Nietzsche doesn't try to present himself or his ideas as "moral". Second thing you'll notice, is that Nietzsche has some brilliant things to say on the subject, while Greene's contributions (so far, in the first part of the book) are the most basic common-sense advice for anyone who's both power-hungry and lacks a conscience. Third thing you'll notice is an actual exploration of what power is, instead of anecdotal tips on how to trick people and make yourself Hollywood-famous.

His next point is how this book is a distillation of ancient wisdom (he even gives a list of names). Which bears a hidden advice: go read the works of these people, as there won't be anything original in this book. This part reminded me a lot of the beginning of "How to win friends and influence people" -- explaining how manipulation is moral, then claiming to have distilled ancient (and new) knowledge from the greatest thinkers in history.

Next up, he gives several quotes from "The prince" by Machiavelli -- arguably THE book about the practical, deceitful and ruthless aspects of gaining and maintaining power, and yet another book you should probably read instead of this one.

Another quote from Nietzsche. Then a quote from Goethe. Then quotes from more thinkers.

Why quoting Nietzsche here is a joke: Nietzsche delves deep into the nature of morality, and attempts to lead humanity beyond it and into a different, hopefully better way of directing our lives. Greene, on the other hand, simply uses it as an excuse: he argues that since good and evil don't exist, you should just lie and cheat your way to the top regardless of the consequences.
Nothing matters, so why not just do what we want, no matter who gets hurt along the way? And people say Nietzsche is immature...

And now, finally, the beginning of the actual book:

Law 1: Never outshine the master.

I can't do it. I'm out. End of review.

Apparently this book sold more than 1.2 million copies in the US alone. How...

The author's Wikipedia page might just be the best thing to come out of these wasted 26 minutes and 13 seconds (if it seems like I'm being malicious, please remember that this author advocates renouncing all social and moral responsibility and doing whatever):

He practices Zen Buddhism... the guy who preaches lies and deceit.

When asked about his religious beliefs, he said his are similar to Einstein's; only they in turn are borrowed from Spinoza, and are basically "God exists, but he's just the universe, but also much more than just the universe". Of all the brilliant things Einstein had to say, Greene took one of those who make the least sense (and a favorite of many religious people who can't reconcile what they know with what they believe).

He got stung by a bee, which caused a serious stroke. He's fine now.

Looked up a list of his 48 laws. They are as generic as you'd expect. Here are a few highlights:

6. Court attention at all cost.
7. Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit.
14. Pose as a friend, work as a spy.
20. Do not commit to anyone.
27. Play on people’s need to believe to create a cult like following. (he then gives instructions on how to create a cult)

✘ Law 41: Avoid stepping into a great man’s shoes.
✔ Law 41: Be yourself and carve your own path. No one can ever do that better than you.

✘ Law 42: Strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter.
✔ Law 42: Start at the root of any problem. Don’t just cover up symptoms.

✘ Law 43: Work on the hearts and minds of others.
✔ Law 43: You will be more successful by speaking to the emotions of other people, not just their rational side.

✘ Law 44: Disarm and infuriate with the mirror effect.
✔ Law 44: Such a twisted way to state the golden rule: treat others how you want to be treated. Explain to others how you do not want to be treated with a steady voice and a locked-in gaze, if this becomes an issue.

✘ Law 45: Preach the need for change, but never reform too much at once.
✔ Law 45: Too much change is difficult for everyone. When working towards the greater good, sell the vision while taking smaller steps and celebrating wins.

✘ Law 46: Never appear too perfect.
✔ Law 46: No one is perfect. Laugh about your most embarrassing mistakes to become more powerful than those wearing masks.

✘ Law 47: Do not go past the mark you aimed for; in victory know when to stop.
✔ Law 47: Set goals, achieve them, and review your progress. A life of victory is not a life of excess.

✘ Law 48: Assume formlessness
✔ Law 48: Be like water: adapt and flow. Become an expert in dealing with change. Stick only to your core values.

A well written book with one fatal flaw - it advocates and excuses immoral self-serving behavior.

This backwards thinking is exactly why there are so many assholes walking around as we speak.

It would be better if he didn't try and blatantly make excuses for his words by saying he is simply a 'realist' and with remarks along the lines of 'it's just the way it is' - this is cowardly low level thinking.

The biggest indicator of his mistake, and fact that he is lying to himself so that he sleeps easy at night, is, ironically, his own advice.

Here is an extract from the book:

'The most important of these skills, and power’s crucial foundation, is the ability to master your emotions. An emotional response to a situation is the single greatest barrier to power, a mistake that will cost you a lot more than any temporary satisfaction you might gain by expressing your feelings. Emotions cloud reason, and if you cannot see the situation clearly, you cannot prepare for and respond to it with any degree of control. Anger is the most destructive emotion, for it clouds your vision the most.'

And here is an extract from a recent interview with him published on the Telegraph:

'Compared with The 48 Laws of Power, his latest book isn’t nearly so… “Evil?” interjects Greene with a chuckle. Well, yes. It contains a few dubious recommendations – such as figuratively “knifing” your mentor, once you’ve extracted everything useful from them. But the overall tone of the book is far less immoral. Has he lost his bite? “I suppose it’s possible that I’m softening but I don’t like to think that. In 48 Laws I was channelling some anger. It was a catharsis. Maybe I’ve just moved on.'

It's a pity his clouded vision will be the downfall of so many fools who absorb his words blindly despite their basis on his own pent up rage and resentment.

Don't get me wrong - the book is worth reading within the right context, but without it it is dangerous beyond words.

Here is the full interview if anyone is interested: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/bo...

Power that lacks integrity is the worst kind and a true hazard to the human condition. I hope one day he wakes up to his own idiocy in this regard.
