Raymond E Feist has crafted an exquisitely beautiful magical war.

His books have a charm that makes readers feel completely at ease, as if they are in a familiar world, yet with his own unique twist on the tropes.

This is truly a classic fantasy novel, written with great expertise.

The main characters are on par with all the other great legends in the genre.

They are vividly drawn and their adventures are both thrilling and engaging.

The Riftwar Saga is a must-read for any fantasy lover.

It takes you on a journey through a rich and detailed world, filled with magic, adventure, and unforgettable characters.

Highly recommended!

I finally managed to complete this, even though it had been lying around for years.

To be honest, it's just okay. The formulas employed are rather predictable and formulaic. The characters are so extremely stereotyped that it was truly difficult to look beyond that aspect.

However, there are a couple of interesting perspectives. In particular, the situation regarding one of the characters is somewhat engaging.

Nevertheless, overall, there was nothing in this that made me feel compelled to continue reading.

I've heard that there are more than twenty novels set in this particular world.

It makes me wonder if the others might offer something more unique and captivating.

But based on this one, I'm not overly optimistic.

Perhaps I'll give another one a try at some point, but for now, I'm not in a rush.

I'm currently engaged in reading this particular book, and to be completely honest, I've reached a point where I'm seriously contemplating ceasing my reading altogether and simply passing it on to a child.

The author had the noble intention of crafting this entirely new world, complete with a portal leading to another dimension and the discovery of an alien race. The book consists of approximately 480 pages.

At present, I'm on page 211, and thus far, even after reaching the halfway mark of the book, the meager amount of action that this book could potentially offer has scarcely made an appearance.

Titled "The Magician's Apprentice," up until now, Pug, the main character (or the eponymous magician apprentice), has managed to have only two magic tricks up his sleeve.

I had initially thought that the book would not only chronicle Pug's life but also be filled with some exciting magic action, as the title seemed to imply. However, after reaching the halfway point of this 400-page book, there has been no additional magic from Pug aside from the two tricks already mentioned.

As for his Master Kulgan, there has been no significant display of magic either, aside from using it to create fog in a forest, which was only mentioned up until around page 206.

I purchased this book with the anticipation of experiencing more magic action as described in the summary or perhaps misled by the title, but unfortunately, there has been nothing of the sort.

Nevertheless, I will persevere and continue reading the book to see if any more magic is mentioned throughout. Once I've completed it, I'll be sure to return and pen yet another review expressing my thoughts.

SOOOOO GOOD!!!! This book is truly captivating and I simply did not want to put it down. It has a nice length of 500+ pages, which allows for a detailed and immersive story.

The orphan Pug travels to the forest on the shore of the Kingdom of the Isles to study with the master magician Kulgan. Despite his courage, which earns him a place at court and the heart of a lovely Princess, he feels ill at ease with the normal ways of wizardry.

However, Pug's strange sort of magic holds the potential to change the fates of two worlds forever. Dark beings from another world have opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime, reigniting the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos.

At first, Pug seems like a weird name, but as you read on, you quickly get used to it. This book is recommended for ages 10-16, as it offers an exciting adventure and a world full of magic and mystery.

Band 1 of the Midkemia Saga has made me have a great deal of fun and excitement for the rest of the series.

The story in this first installment is filled with interesting characters and a captivating plot. It takes the reader on a journey through a magical world, full of adventure and mystery. The author's writing style is engaging, making it easy to get lost in the story.

I found myself completely immersed in the world of Midkemia, eagerly turning the pages to see what would happen next. The action-packed scenes kept me on the edge of my seat, while the character development added depth and emotion to the story.

Overall, Band 1 of the Midkemia Saga is a great read and has left me looking forward to exploring the rest of the series. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels.

Someone recommended me this book and I was kind of afraid of reading it. “Another fantasy book”, I thought.

However, the truth is that this book is very well written. Just in the first part, we have, maybe, a span of six years. Some chapters are set days, weeks, months, and even years after the previous one, which makes the action progress at a really good rhythm.

The action also follows different characters, each one with a well-defined personality, and different parts of the world. Several characters have a very particular humor and the drama put in some scenes feels real.

The change between perspectives sometimes has us thinking “and what about that character?”, but Feist’s way of writing the story quickly makes us forget about what’s happening in the other side of this fantastic world and focus solemnly on the new perspectives being thrown at us.

What we have here is a fast-paced fantasy book, with lots of humor, and lots of smart and strong characters that is, indeed, one of the best in its kind.

If you are a fan of fantasy books, I highly recommend you to check out this one. You won't be disappointed.

A Different Take on Fantasy

Fantasy has always been a genre that allows our imaginations to run wild. However, this particular work offers a truly unique and unexpected perspective on the fantastical. It takes us on a journey that defies all our preconceived notions and expectations.

Unlike traditional fantasy stories, this one doesn't rely on the usual tropes and clichés. Instead, it presents a world that is both familiar and yet completely foreign. The characters are complex and multi-dimensional, with their own motives and desires that drive the story forward.

The author has masterfully crafted a narrative that keeps us on the edge of our seats, constantly guessing what will happen next. The world-building is detailed and immersive, making us feel as if we are truly a part of this strange and wonderful universe.

This different take on fantasy is a breath of fresh air in a genre that can sometimes feel stagnant. It challenges us to think outside the box and embrace the unexpected. If you're looking for a fantasy story that will leave you spellbound, then this is definitely one to check out.

I vividly remember the very first time I read this particular book. It was passed down to me by a friend of mine. We were both serving in the Navy and were in the midst of going through electronics school. In my humble opinion, it is truly a classic within the fantasy genre. However, there is one drawback to this book and later the entire series. It borrows an excessive amount of material from other fantasy novels in an attempt to create a lasting and engaging tale. The works of Tolkien, Brooks, Donaldson, and others can clearly be seen shining through the Riftwar Saga as well. This borrowing, while perhaps not entirely detracting from the overall enjoyment of the story, does make one wonder about the originality of the work. Nevertheless, it still manages to capture the imagination and draw readers into its fantastical world.

This one is a 3.5 for me.

To be honest, I actually found that I enjoyed it more in the beginning. The story had a certain charm and吸引力 that really drew me in.

However, as I got towards the end, I got a bit lost in the wackiness. The plot seemed to take some rather unexpected turns that I wasn't entirely sure how to follow.

Despite this, I might still carry on with the series. I think there is potential there, and I'm curious to see where the author will take the story next.

But of course, there are also lots of other books on my to-read list. So I'll have to prioritize and see which ones I want to pick up first.

Overall, it was an interesting read, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else this author has to offer.

I have reread this book three times, and I have loved every single page turn. Each time I pick up this book, it feels like embarking on a new adventure. The words seem to come alive on the page, painting vivid pictures in my mind. The story is so captivating that I find myself completely immersed in it, forgetting about the world around me.

The characters are well-developed and relatable, and I have found myself rooting for them throughout the book. The plot is full of twists and turns that keep me on the edge of my seat, eager to find out what happens next. I have also noticed new details and nuances with each reread, which has deepened my appreciation for the book even further.

In conclusion, this book is a true gem, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great read. I will definitely be rereading it many more times in the future.

My rating is 3.75.

The storyline is set in a world called Midkemia. On the far western coast of the human kingdom of Rillanon, there is a province named Crydee where a ritual is maintained. As per the requirement, they set a day of choosing. On this day, 15-year-old boys are chosen by specific masters for apprenticeship. Tomas and Pug are two friends who were also chosen. This is just the beginning. (I don't like to reveal too much about the story. It's better if you read it yourself if you're interested.)

There are other characters like the princes of Crydee, Lyam and Arutha, and a beautifully described princess named Carline. So, there will be some elements of romanticism. There are elves, dwarves, and even some goblins. You will also be introduced to a dragon-like creature called a firedrake, and there is a dragon as well, although it doesn't play a major role in the story.

Let me briefly tell you what I liked and didn't like, which may help you decide whether or when you will read this Riftwar series.

First, the dislikes: There is too much description of the surroundings in some places. Although description is crucial for high fantasy to orient the reader, in comparison to the specific plot building, it's excessive.

There are only 5 female characters, and only 2 of them have important roles in the story. It feels more like a man's world.

The main characters and their acquisition of power seem too hasty and don't meet the reader's passion for a hero.

It's really concerning that there is very little description about the Tsurani people who invaded.

Now, the likes: A new world of fantasy always appeals to me :D

I assume that the dislikes I mentioned will be addressed soon in the consecutive books. (I'm not worried about that at all.)

Some of the characters are really charming.

The idea of another world from where the invaders came is fascinating.

This book is just the start of another cool fantasy series. So far, I don't think it's a must-read, but for die-hard fantasy lovers, I would recommend this series.
