Four years have passed since the siege of Crydree, and the war against the Tsurani continues. The friends follow different paths.
Pug is now a slave of the people of Kelewan. Through him and his new friend Laurie, the author introduces us to the other side of the war. Entering the enemy's territory, we get to know their customs, culture, political games, and hierarchy. Although Pug starts as a slave in the Tsurani world, over time he learns to understand and control his power, which he previously had so much difficulty with. This view that the author transmits to us of the previously unknown people is quite interesting.
Tomas is now a great warrior and is followed by the dwarf people as a captain. However, he has an internal struggle because with the artifact given by the dragon, great powers from very ancient times come, and the Elves (one of the oldest beings in the world) do not want to remember. But by winning his struggle, Tomas has an important role to play in the war against the Tsurani.
Unlike the previous book, Feist gives importance to Arutha from the beginning of the book. Arutha continues to try to keep Crydree safe from the Tsurani. However, he needs the help of the Kingdom and tries to ask for it from the prince of Krondor. But when he arrives in the city, he discovers that the Kingdom is on the verge of a civil war, and that it must be avoided at all costs. At the same time, the King of Midkemia believes that the nobles of Crydree are against him and want to remove him from the throne. Arutha has a long journey, from the beginning of the war until its end, where we can see the growth of the character. He becomes a man of strong convictions and with all the weight on his shoulders to take care of Crydree during his father and brother's stay at the front of the battle, only demonstrating the good governor he can become.
Unlike the first book, this one caught my attention from the beginning. The author continues to keep us in suspense regarding the story and its characters, making it difficult to stop reading. I was eager to know what had happened to Pug and Arutha, as they were my favorite characters. There are several events that the reader does not expect, and there are still answers to the previous book. It still leaves us a lot to uncover in the next books, maintaining all the mystery around the wizard Macros.
If the first book was considered excellent, this one is even better and exceeded my expectations.
