This book took a rather awesome turn, shattering the typical storytelling framework that we have grown accustomed to in the Feist-land.

The antagonist of the previous novel has now become the hero of this one. :) He was extremely cunning, unpredictably cool, and thus deserved a second chance. :) And he did get that encore, being exiled to a distant land, in chains, and left to fend for himself.

However, during his journey, he undergoes a transformation. :) Not bad at all. :)

Oh, and it had nothing to do with the Geas. :) Nor with the revelations that the entire world was about to turn into a feeding ground for evil pouring in through thousands of portals. Or the discovery that evil is indeed madness. :)

I believe I had more enjoyment reading this one compared to the last five or six novels. Perhaps even more. But then again, I have a soft spot for redemption novels. :)

Going away from the ordinary, Feist commences this third installment in the Conclave of Shadows trilogy by ingeniously transforming the antagonist from the King of Foxes into the hero in this one!

I truly adore this concept and thoroughly relished Kaspar's odyssey, encompassing not only his physical travels but also his emotional and mental growth.

He initiates his journey with a burning desire for complete vengeance against all those who had exiled him to the far reaches of the world, in the midst of nowhere, and on the verge of being assaulted by fierce desert inhabitants!

From that fateful moment, his path would prove to be arduous, fraught with extreme danger, and would ultimately transmute him from the cold and cruel individual he once was into someone who remorsefully reflects upon his past deeds. Moreover, he evolves beyond his former self to convey to those who had abandoned him that there is a malevolent force abroad in the world that imperils everyone and everything they hold dear - and they have precious little time to take decisive action!

I was completely engrossed in this book and eagerly anticipate delving into what lies ahead in the next volume - a prospect that I absolutely love!

Halfway through this book, I had a realization. This is the book that truly should have kickstarted this particular story arc.

The beginning of this book neatly sums up the backstory of the previous two books. In fact, it does such a great job that those two books might not have even needed to be separate entities.

Ideally, I would have preferred if the last two books could have been combined into a single novel, told from the perspective of Magnus and Caleb. After all, meeting those two characters is by far the most relevant information one obtains from those novels before delving into this book and continuing with the rest of the series.

As for this book itself, it is good enough. However, it's difficult not to be a bit critical of its somewhat lengthy beginning, especially after the slightly tedious "King of Foxes" that preceded it. Perhaps if this book stood alone, it might have received a higher score.

A satisfying end to this trilogy has been achieved. In this installment, we are taken on a journey to a relatively unfamiliar continent. Here, we witness the partial rehabilitation of an apparently irredeemable man. It is truly a remarkable transformation that keeps us engaged throughout the story.

The plot of this book suggests that there is more to come from Feist, which is extremely exciting. The story unfolds at a quick pace, filled with imaginative elements that transport us into a world of adventure. It also draws on some old friends, adding a sense of familiarity and nostalgia.

Overall, this is a great read that combines a captivating plot, well-developed characters, and a unique setting. Whether you are a fan of the trilogy or new to Feist's work, this book is sure to leave you satisfied and eager for more.

I really liked the transformation from villain to hero in this story.

It was a fascinating journey to witness how the character changed.

The plot also advanced very smoothly.
