I was truly astonished by the extremely negative perspective that Mr. Black holds regarding Sir Winston Churchill. It was quite a captivating read to encounter such a divergent opinion.

Moreover, I find it utterly fascinating to observe the duplicity that President Roosevelt seemingly exhibited in achieving the remarkable feats he accomplished, both on the domestic front and in the international arena.

Roosevelt's actions and decisions, while leading to many great achievements, also raise questions about the means he employed.

His ability to navigate the complex political and social landscapes at home and abroad is both impressive and somewhat mysterious.

The contrast between Mr. Black's view of Churchill and the perception of Roosevelt's duplicity adds an interesting layer to the study of these historical figures.

It makes one wonder about the true nature of leadership and the various factors that contribute to a leader's success or failure.

Perhaps further exploration into their lives and legacies will provide more insights and a deeper understanding of their roles in history.

Conrad Black's "Franklin Delano Roosevelt: Champion of Freedom" is an outstanding work. It is a comprehensive and balanced biography of FDR. Roosevelt's life has often inspired biographies that are either overly adulatory or highly critical. However, Black rejects these simplistic views. Instead, he provides an incredibly detailed, strongly opinionated, yet remarkably fair analysis of the man who was perhaps one of the greatest giants of twentieth-century America.

This is a substantial book, consisting of 1134 pages. Black does not focus on a specific aspect of Roosevelt's life or career. Instead, he has covered the entire spectrum, both public and private. Roosevelt's privileged background, his childhood, education, complex marriage, family relationships, rise in politics, life-altering illness, and presidency are all explored in great detail. The significant appointments, political maneuvers, policies, legislation, political allies and enemies, and the crises of each of his four presidential terms are also examined in depth. Black writes in an engaging manner and does a masterful job of transforming what could have been dull and dry details into a captivating story of political gamesmanship.

Black's portrayal of FDR is both compelling and complex. Born into privilege and following the old code of noblesse oblige, Roosevelt seemed to be truly concerned with the welfare of the masses. At the same time, he was curiously indifferent to the feelings of those he knew personally. Although not an intellectual, he had the most remarkable political instincts of any man of his era. He was both gregarious and aloof, visionary and Machiavellian. As he himself noted, he was sphinx-like and unfathomable.
Black has written what is certain to become the definitive biography of Franklin Roosevelt. It is an immediate must-read for all those who wish to study his life. While it is written to appeal to both scholars and those with a general interest, it is not the biography to read if you have only a casual interest in FDR and want a quick introduction to his life. Black's tour de force biography comes very close to covering everything that needs to be said about Roosevelt's extraordinary life. It is powerful, thought-provoking, and highly recommended.

I could live without the authors' "pithy" comments.

Sometimes, these so-called pithy remarks seem more like attempts to show off the author's cleverness rather than adding real value to the content.

They can be distracting and take away from the overall message that the author is trying to convey.

Moreover, not all pithy comments are truly profound or thought-provoking.

Some may be just clichés or trite sayings that have been repeated countless times.

I would rather have a more straightforward and detailed exploration of the topic, without the need for these unnecessary flourishes.

This way, I can better understand the author's perspective and form my own opinions based on the substance of the writing.

After all, the true value of an article lies in its content, not in the cleverness of its comments.

So, if the authors could tone down their pithy remarks and focus more on the substance, I would be a much happier reader.

Conrad Black’s biography of Franklin Roosevelt is an enthralling book that delves deep into the mind and life of an extraordinary individual.

Raised in one of the nation's wealthiest families, Roosevelt became the most influential architect of the American middle class and paved the way for universal civil rights. His respect for the working class was crucial in pulling the nation out of the Depression by finding ways to put them back to work, rejuvenating both the economy and people's faith.

After graduating from law school, Roosevelt found his calling in politics and public speaking. He served in various positions, including Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Struck by Polio, he refused to let his disability stop him and was elected Governor of New York.

By 1933, the US was a different country due to the 1929 Crash. Black vividly describes these desperate times and argues that all of America's hopes rested on Roosevelt. His inauguration speech inspired the nation, and within months, billions were reinvested, and many went back to work.

During World War II, Roosevelt overcame the isolationist Congress and public to support the Allies. Through his oratory and personality, he increased defense spending and implemented policies like "cash and carry" and "Lend-Lease." By the time of Pearl Harbor, the US military was stronger.

Roosevelt's passing in 1945 was mourned worldwide. Churchill's speech in the British House of Commons praised his many qualities. Roosevelt's efforts to save democracy and help Britain were widely recognized. He was truly a remarkable leader.

I initially had the inclination to dislike this book. The reason being that Conrad Black is truly an odious figure. However, his proficiency in the written language is simply astonishing. There were times when I had to rush to the dictionary to look up words like "resipiscence".

Moreover, I find myself completely drawn in by the Tory hauteur present in his narrative. It is evident that this is a work of wealth and privilege. At times, the book can be a bit gossipy. Nevertheless, it successfully undertakes the task of documenting the epic scope of FDR's life and work.

Black manages to gore some rather surprising oxen in his critiques of conservative interpretations regarding the New Deal and Yalta. Additionally, the concluding chapter presents an elegant and comprehensive argument for Roosevelt's historical preeminence. If you have a penchant for Gore Vidal's presumptive essays on American history, then you are certain to love this book.

It offers a unique perspective and a wealth of information that makes it a captivating read for those interested in American history and the life of FDR.

A wonderful biography of FDR.

This work presents a detailed and engaging account of the life and times of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

While it is true that the subject matter is so vast and complex that it perhaps cannot be fully distilled into just 1100 pages, the author, Black, has done an admirable and fine job.

The reader is never short changed as Black delves deep into the various aspects of FDR's life, including his political career, his leadership during the Great Depression and World War II, and his personal relationships.

The biography offers valuable insights into FDR's character, his decision-making process, and the impact he had on the United States and the world.

Okay so far, the situation seems to be progressing steadily. However, there are still some aspects that require our attention. For example, the market trends are constantly changing, and we need to stay updated to make informed decisions. Additionally, our competitors are also working hard to gain an edge, so we cannot afford to be complacent. We must continue to innovate and improve our products and services to meet the evolving needs of our customers. Moreover, teamwork is essential in achieving our goals. Each member of the team has their own strengths and weaknesses, and we need to work together effectively to maximize our potential. In conclusion, while we have made good progress so far, we still have a long way to go. We must remain focused, adaptable, and committed to achieving success.

This exhaustive biography of FDR was purchased years ago and sat idle on the bookshelf.

It was a hefty tome, consisting of 1,134 pages, and I never quite felt up to the challenge of reading it.

However, when I finally did pick it up and start reading, I found it to be immensely satisfying.

What Black achieves splendidly in this book is his deft placement of Roosevelt in relation to the other commanding figures of the age, such as Churchill, Stalin, and Hitler.

Despite being surrounded by such powerful personalities, FDR still managed to dominate the era.

Black makes a strong case that FDR was the 20th Century's most significant figure, and it's hard to argue with his assessment.

Amid the weighty considerations in the book, Black also provides many poignant glimpses into the character of this most original of world leaders.

FDR was a complex man, a rascal in some ways, but his eyes were always firmly fixed on the noble goals he set for himself and for the nation.

Overall, this biography is a must-read for anyone interested in FDR or in the history of the 20th Century.

This book isn't bad.

I just happened to pick it up at a moment when I was longing for a much lighter read.

It seems that it didn't quite meet my expectations at this particular time.

However, I do think that I may go back to it one day.

But that will only happen when I am in the mood for something serious.

Perhaps in the future, when my state of mind is different, I will be able to appreciate the deeper meanings and contents that this book has to offer.

For now, it will remain on my bookshelf, waiting for the right moment to be rediscovered.

Who knows, maybe that day will come sooner than I expect.
