Be My Guest is a story about a inspiring saga of the man behind one of America's great success stories. Conrad Hilton was born in San Antonio, Socorro County, Territory of New Mexico. Born with a family of six which are two sister name Felice & Eva, brother Carl, his mother Mary Laufersweiler Hilton & father name Augustus Holver Hilton or Gus. His father was a big man physically-a robust six-footer with big hands, big feet, handlebar mustaches, and a big voice. Gus bought his first hotel in Cisco, Texas & built his first hotel in Dallas, Texas.

Then bought the second hotel which is the famous Waldorf Astoria, New York in 1931 fifteen years later became a Hilton Hotel. He (Gus) had been his first big dream & he worked harder making it a reality, suffered more heartbreak, struggled against bigger odds over this infinitesimal building in the middle of nowhere than at any other time in my career, barring the Depression. Conrad Hilton went to Goss Military Institute in Albuquerque, he was almost twelve. At Fifteen, he met his wife Helen Keller. She has written a book called Optimism. In the book, she wrote about "Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement; nothing can be done without hope." And summed up by stating that "Optimismis the harmony between man's spirit and the spirit of God pronouncing His works good." At sixteenth his father had sold the coal mines for 10,000, which in those days made him one of the richest men in the Territory. In 1904 the dollar was worth something. Men worked a dollar a day and on that lived decently and raised family of five or six. With 00,000 Gus was a millionaire.

I read this not only out of an obligation stemming from my own career in the hospitality industry, but also due to some genuine interest in reading about the lives of successful individuals. To my pleasant surprise, I found a great deal of it to be far more captivating than I had initially anticipated. There were numerous stories within the text that I couldn't help but repeat to my wife, sharing the interesting tidbits and insights.

Although Hilton's Christian views seem to become more pronounced in his later years, to the extent that it sometimes feels as if the autobiography is veering into the territory of preaching, one cannot deny the high level of respectability in the man's written legacy. His advice, too, is sage and worthy of consideration. It offers valuable lessons and perspectives that can be applied not only in the context of the hospitality business but also in various aspects of life.

Overall, despite the minor drawback of the overly prominent religious undertones at times, this work provides a fascinating look into the life and mind of a truly remarkable individual.

Surprisingly good.

The tone was schmaltzy at times, and sometimes it was boastful with what seemed like false modesty and was overtly religious, which might be difficult for some to accept. Oh, and also, occasionally, the nomenclature was no longer acceptable, such as “the Japs”.

Having got the bad things out of the way, I found it interesting to read. First of all, it covers a time period that I believe receives less attention. Secondly, it is from the viewpoint of someone born in the West. Thirdly, it is empowering to read about a “success story” and see that they were not always successful.

Surprisingly, there isn't a great deal in here about the day-to-day operations of hotels. However, his philosophies about hotels abroad are inspiring. The last chapter could practically be a modern-day rah-rah article on LinkedIn, which, in the end, is a compliment to something written in 1957.

This shows that despite its flaws, the work has certain aspects that make it worthy of consideration and can still offer valuable insights and inspiration even after all these years.

Surprisingly good,

Hilton's mother was an outstanding example of religious dedication and faith.

She deeply loved the lessons she imparted to her children, which included persistence, hard work, and the power of prayer.

Her son Conrad indeed developed these same qualities, but unfortunately, his work ethic seemed to be solely focused on his career.

In life, as with everything else, there must be a balance.

It is true that Mr. Hilton achieved great material success, but he paid a very high price for that accomplishment.

Perhaps if he had balanced his life better and not sacrificed everything for his career, he might have found a more fulfilling and satisfying existence.

Nevertheless, his story serves as a reminder that we should all strive for balance in our lives and not let one aspect overshadow the others.

We should value our relationships, our health, and our spiritual well-being just as much as our professional achievements.

Only then can we truly find happiness and success in all areas of our lives.
