Captain Aizen's letter reveals a devious plan to steal the execution sword, which is the reason Rukia is facing a sentence and why it has been moved up. The plan aims to wipe out all of Soul Society. In the letter, he tells Hinamaori that it was Captain Toshiro who devised the whole scheme and that if Aizen dies, she'll have to kill Toshiro. Toshiro easily knocks Hinamaori aside and blames Gin for this deceit, and they promptly start to fight. Toshiro unleashes his sword's true form, an ice dragon. Gin attempts to kill Hinamaori but is stopped by Matsumoto. Meanwhile, Rukia's execution is advanced to tomorrow. Renji shows up at the place where Ichego is training and decides to work on Bankai as well.

Rukia's old captain confronts Byakuya about his apparent lack of care for Rukia. Rukia has a flashback to the events involving Gangu's brother, Kaien. He was the assistant captain of the 13th company and always treated Rukia as an equal. She looked up to his wife, but one day, his wife was brutally murdered by a hollow. Kaien goes to take on that hollow alone, but it has special abilities and takes control of his body. Rukia is forced to kill him to stop the hollow.
