Not having the slightest knowledge about the life of swans, I was truly intrigued by this book. It is truly amazing how the swans became so tame. By closely observing their instinctive movements over a period of several years, the author was able to anticipate their next move with remarkable accuracy. The story is filled with heartwarming parts that touch the soul, such as the beautiful bond that develops between the swans and the author. However, it also has its darker spots, which are caused by both nature and humans. For example, the harsh winter conditions and the illegal hunting of swans pose a significant threat to their survival. Despite these challenges, the author's love and dedication to the swans shine through, making this a truly captivating and thought-provoking read.

Budd Schulberg (1914–2009) was a screenwriter, novelist, and journalist who is best remembered for the classic novels What Makes Sammy Run?, The Harder They Fall, and the story On the Waterfront, which he adapted as a novel, play, and an Academy Award–winning film script. Born in New York City, Schulberg grew up in Hollywood, where his father, B. P. Schulberg, was head of production at Paramount, among other studios. Throughout his career, Schulberg worked as a journalist and essayist, often writing about boxing, a lifelong passion. Many of his writings on the sport are collected in Sparring with Hemingway (1995). Other highlights from Schulberg's nonfiction career include Moving Pictures (1981), an account of his upbringing in Hollywood, and Writers in America (1973), a glimpse of some of the famous novelists he met early in his career. He died in 2009.

The blurb claims that this is from 1994 or something, but in reality, it is 1976. I have no recollection whatsoever about this book or how I came across it. My paternal grandmother had a collection of some sort of naturalist books. Perhaps this was one of them that I read during my visit to her in England. It's quite strange how the memory of this book has faded completely from my mind. Maybe it didn't leave a significant enough impression on me at the time. However, it's interesting to think that it could have been part of my early exposure to the world of naturalism. Even though I don't remember the details of the book, the fact that it was in my grandmother's collection makes it a bit more special. It makes me wonder what other hidden gems might have been among those books. Perhaps there are more memories waiting to be unearthed.

Nice short but interesting book. It truly captured my attention from the very beginning. I could really relate to some of its content. The description of hand feeding the birds was so vivid that it made me feel as if I was right there experiencing it myself. And then, the magnificence of seeing so many birds in the Florida Everglades in late November after some southerly migrations had been completed was simply breathtaking. The author's words painted a beautiful picture in my mind, allowing me to imagine the colorful flocks of birds filling the sky and the wetlands. It was a wonderful read that not only entertained me but also gave me a deeper appreciation for the beauty of nature and the amazing migrations of birds. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in nature or simply enjoys a good story. It's a short but impactful read that will leave you with a sense of wonder and a desire to explore the natural world around you.

What a truly neat story! I'm always intrigued, and perhaps a bit jealous, whenever I read about the interaction between humans and animals. I don't know precisely why, but this is especially the case when it comes to the interaction between humans and birds. I firmly believe that they possess an intellect that is far greater than the credit typically given to them. What makes this particular story even stranger is the fact that the birds in question were Swans. If you've never had any experience with Swans, it's essential to be very careful. They can be extremely protective of their nests and each other. Moreover, they seem to think they're 20ft tall, so don't think you can simply shush them away. The writer and his wife finally gained acceptance from the Swans, along with the realization that they can never be pets. They are wild creatures and should be given the respect they deserve. And indeed, they did show that respect. This story serves as a wonderful reminder of the beauty and complexity of the relationship between humans and the animal kingdom.
