Rather than being a guru, a mystical convert, or a philosopher par excellence, this biography presents a man who was almost constantly afflicted throughout his life.

He suffered from ailments, depression, escapism, complaints, and whining. There was even a spell of suicide during the Steppenwolf era. He had the burdens of a marriage that he didn't initially want to take on. Petty political arguments and justifications also plagued him. Moreover, he was constantly indecisive between two states of being: that of the comfortable bourgeois at home and that of the roving wanderer渴望摆脱所有束缚 (Apollo and Dionysus, Narcissus and Goldmund). Every time he entered one state, the grass seemed greener on the other side. This went on until quite late in life when he may have finally found some calm.

Nevertheless, I still enjoyed reading about his exploits. But considering all the fame he had achieved, it makes one wonder why he complained so much. If I were to attain the level of fame he did as a writer at such an early age, I would assume I'd be much happier. However, who really knows? Maybe fame comes with its own set of burdens. As David Bowie said in the 2000s, he wouldn't wish fame on his worst enemy. Although Bowie was a pop star with a constantly changing image and identity, while Hesse was a European literary intellectual who only slightly played up the Steppenwolf image in public.

A bit repetitive at times, but perhaps we can sympathize with the biographer dealing with a subject as neurotic as the great Hermann Hesse.

I would have liked to read more about the reception of Hesse's work in the American counterculture in the 60s and early 70s. This was a critical market for Hesse after his death in 1962. However, Freedman may have avoided the topic for want of appropriate archival material. Those personal letters and diary entries, which are favored in the work and used to great and impressive effect, might not have been available.

At 400 pages, "Pilgrim of Crisis" is not a short read. It is probably a difficult one to get through for those who are not already infatuated or at least highly familiar with Hesse's oeuvre. But I would recommend it to anyone looking for something of a case study in German literary history from the late Romantic period through to the mid-20th century. It is also a great read for those looking to understand the intense politics of the German and Swiss artistic milieus through WW1 and WW2. Surely, this book will also strengthen one's appreciation for each of Hesse's novels as Freedman delves deeply into the production and inspiration of each.

This was an extensively researched and truly enlightening read on one of the 20th century's most influential writers.

Do you have a burning desire to know the real life of a writer? The genuine insecurities that plagued them, the numerous obstacles (both internal and external) they had to overcome, and the transcendent evolutions they underwent when seeking the ultimate artistic expressions? If so, then this biography is precisely for you. However, it's important not to approach it blindly.

If you are already a devoted fan of Hesse, you are well-prepared. But if you're unfamiliar with his work, then it's essential to start with the major ones: Demian, Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, and The Glass Bead Game. For a concise yet delightful treat, check out Journey to the East. The transformation of this author over the years and the remarkable way he captures the conflicts within a person's spirit is truly astounding. And here, in this biography, Freedman holds nothing back. Hesse is presented as neither a sinner nor a saint; he is wholly human, with all his flaws and imperfections. I would not trade my time spent with this book for anything in the world.

It has provided me with a profound understanding of Hesse's life and work, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the life and art of this remarkable writer.

Our paths crossed at Blossoms before the second wave hit.

To be precise, I have been attempting to complete this book for a considerable period.

There were moments when I regretted selecting it from the second-hand book shelf, yet there were also times when I simply couldn't put it down.

Hesse, who went from having his works considered a crime to read to becoming a Nobel laureate, shared his dilemmas and crises with great honesty.

The author has truly conducted a significant amount of research to gain such a profound understanding of Hesse, only to fall in love with the subject.

"

Hesse's message of wholeness

that can never be whole,

of exile that strives towards

but can never reach home

" This profound statement encapsulates the essence of Hesse's complex and thought-provoking works.

It makes us reflect on the human condition and our eternal search for meaning and belonging.

As I continue to read and explore Hesse's world, I am constantly amazed by his insights and the depth of his writing.

I forgot - all I remember is that when I was in high school, I had an insatiable appetite for reading. I devoured everything by and about Herman Hesse and Eric Fromme that I could get my hands on. Their works opened up new worlds of thought and emotion for me, and I was deeply influenced by their ideas.

Looking back now, I realize that I should have read more books by Kurt Vonnegut and Saul Bellow back then, too. Their unique writing styles and profound insights into human nature would have surely added another dimension to my literary experiences.

I often wonder what kind of impact those additional readings would have had on my intellectual and personal growth. Maybe I would have seen the world from a different perspective, or perhaps I would have been inspired to pursue a different path in life.

Nevertheless, I am grateful for the books that I did read during my high school years, as they laid the foundation for my love of literature and my ongoing exploration of the human condition.
