This is a rather interesting piece. It can be seen as a latter-day Grimm’s tale. It has an endearing quality that draws the reader in and creates a certain atmosphere. However, it also has its peculiarities. The symbolism within it is quite unique and may require some careful thought and analysis to fully understand. Additionally, the message it conveys is rather abstruse, not immediately obvious or easy to grasp.

Overall, it has its charm and appeal, but it also presents challenges to the reader. It makes one think and wonder about the deeper meanings and interpretations that might lie beneath the surface. Despite its oddities, it still manages to engage the reader and leave an impression.

Notes: A latter-day Grimm’s tale, it’s endearing and atmospheric, though its symbolism’s peculiar and its message abstruse.

While the story is truly very enjoyable and compulsively readable, the star of this little novella is most definitely the remarkable artwork. It is simply beyond stunning. I found myself spending ages just gazing at the illustrations in sheer awe! The story itself is quite engaging and fun, leaving me with a strong desire for more. I would gladly read a full-length novel featuring these characters. It's definitely trademark GRRM. Despite being a middle grade novella, it is surprisingly quite gruesome and bloody. However, I'm not complaining in the slightest. In fact, I'm all for the gruesome and bloody elements! They add an extra layer of excitement and authenticity to the narrative.

I already knew that Mr. Martin could write damn well.

His writing style is not always the most accurate, and often lacks closeness to the characters. However, it is still engaging and allows the reader to delve deeper into the fantasy worlds he builds so excellently.

He is world-renowned because of A Game of Thrones and its sequels.

But he is also widely criticized because of the huge amount of time it requires him to finish his next book.

Yes, I understand the frustration readers have with his slow working pace.

But I still want The Winds of Winter to be the best sequel to the five previous books in the Song of Ice and Fire series as it could be.

This is why I will respect the fact that GRRM seems to need what feels like thirty years for finishing three pages.

So, what can be more suited to fill the gaps between his books than some sweet little short stories?

At only 7,700 words, George R.R. Martin narrates the story of a young little girl called Adara.

She is an extraordinary girl who was born in winter and has remained cold on her body as well as in her heart ever since.

She loathes summer and longs for winter, for snow and cold... and a reunion with the most beloved thing in her life.

Not only is Adara physically cold, but also emotionally distant and unsociable towards her family.

Yet the only living creature she seems to be able to warm up to turns out to be an ice dragon.

In a world torn apart by war and destruction, Adara seeks peace and solace in the presence of 'her' ice dragon.

But the arrival of war at her family's home will prove to be an obstacle too huge to overcome for a small girl like her.

Entering the story, I fully expected to find interesting dynamics between the main character and the ice dragon.

The latter one, however, remained rather soulless in comparison to the dragons GRRM invented for his fantasy world set in Westeros.

(It has been argued that \\"The Ice Dragon\\" is set in Westeros as well, but apart from slight indications, nothing within the text manifests this theory - and one shall bear in mind that this story has been written many years before \\"A Game of Thrones\\".)

Adara is the only character we are allowed to grow attached to, while her family is characterized only casually and without giving further attention to them.

This may either be a result of the story being restricted to a small scale, or rather of Adara's emotional coldness - which also causes the destructive war to be left unexplained throughout the course of the story.

Even before starting the ASoIaF series, GRRM was able to restrict his stories to the eyes of their protagonists.

So we did not see anything which Adara didn't see.

I quite like this concept in contrast to the more Shakespearian dramatic irony, where the reader knows more than the characters.

Since it allows us to grow more attached to the protagonist.

However, something was amiss for the duration of the story, and it mostly lacked some more vital dynamics between the two main players (Adara and the Ice Dragon).

George R.R. Martin's writing style is enthralling as ever, though, and leaves only few details to be missed.

Even if only for the beautiful illustrations, this short story can definitely be recommended for fans of the Song of Ice and Fire series who cannot get enough of Martin's writing.

A Short, Quick Kids Story

Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Tim. Tim loved to explore the world around him. One day, he decided to go on an adventure in the forest near his home.

As he walked through the forest, he saw many beautiful things. There were colorful flowers, tall trees, and chirping birds. Tim was amazed by all the beauty.

Suddenly, he heard a strange sound. He followed the sound and found a small, lost puppy. The puppy was scared and alone. Tim felt sorry for the puppy and decided to help it.

He carried the puppy in his arms and looked for its owner. After a while, they found the puppy's owner. The owner was very grateful to Tim for finding his puppy.

Tim was happy that he had helped the puppy. He learned that helping others can make you feel good. And he continued to have many more adventures in the forest.

This is a short, quick kids story that teaches a valuable lesson. It may not be the most exciting story, but it has a simple charm that kids can enjoy. 4 out of 10 stars.

All George, all the time...

With the cool impersonality of a folktale winter, The Ice Dragon is the captivating tale of Adara. She was born during a freeze so severe that the cold penetrated deep into the womb from which she emerged. As is Martin's renowned trademark, this short story is beautifully melancholic. It features some victories, yet there is no truly happy ending. It is masterfully put together, although I am not entirely certain which audience I would recommend it for.

Spoilers, maybe

I had a certain liking for this when I read it 15 years ago, but on this occasion, I was less impressed. I truly like George and can never deny his remarkable skill. There is something deliciously dark in this Grimm-ish tale. However, my takeaways from this reading were along the lines of:

- Children can be selfishly ungrateful and cold little beings.

- Parents may blame their emotional detachment on their work and their own children.

- Well-intentioned uncles can still seem creepy to their nieces.

- Everyone treats animals rather horribly.

- Nobody can achieve a happy ending without sacrificing what defines them.

Overall, this is neatly constructed, and I would not dissuade anyone from picking it up. I think perhaps I am just a bit overwhelmed by GRRM's pessimism. For the skill of the presentation, I would probably rate this as a four-star read, but my overall enjoyment places it closer to three. It is worth noting that my two friends, who were reading this for the first time, ranked it a bit higher than I did.

What a precious story!

The Ice Dragon is a short story by George Martin set within the universe of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Adara is a winter child and has never been understood by either her father or her brothers. So she seeks refuge in the Ice Dragon, who comes to find her on each birthday.

It is a very beautiful and touching story. I liked seeing Westeros from the perspective of a farming family. I liked the narration from the eyes of a little girl and I enjoyed reading it in its original language.

The illustrations are lovely and... IT HAS DRAGONS.

Super enjoyable and recommended. George knows very well how to tell stories and reach the reader

Despite awarding it 3 stars, it wasn't poorly written or anything of that sort. In fact, it was more of a short book targeted at the low- to middle-grade audience, which isn't really my cup of tea. Nevertheless, the illustrations by Luis Royo were really well done. They added a certain charm and visual appeal to the story. Moreover, the story was set in the same world as A Song of Ice and Fire, which was an interesting aspect. However, overall, it just didn't have that something special that would make me want to write home about it. It was an okay read, but nothing truly outstanding or memorable.

My story was very interesting. There was a frozen girl who everyone kept at a distance. Andara met a creature that everyone feared, a dragon of ice. From then on, an unusual agreement was born. They met every year on her birthday... The language was simple and the narration was beautiful. However, what impressed me was the illustration by Luis Royo. It's not that it needed recommendations... One of the reasons for reading this book was that I knew Luis Royo illustrated it. From the scenery to the dragons, from the girl to the snow, everything was extremely beautiful. Excellent. The combination of the story and the images really produced a very good result.

I was truly captivated by this book. The way the story unfolded and the stunning illustrations worked together seamlessly. It was like being transported into a magical world. The simplicity of the language made it accessible to a wide range of readers, while the detailed illustrations added depth and dimension to the narrative.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story and beautiful art. It's a wonderful combination that will surely leave you with a lasting impression. 4/5.

[4.5/5 stars] This was an exquisitely beautiful little book. Luis Royo is my absolute favorite artist, so I was determined to get my hands on this collaboration without delay. And the fact that it was about a dragon sealed the deal for me. The story itself was quite good. It had a slightly darker tone than the typical “girl and her dragon” narrative, which I found appealing. However, it might have been just a touch too dark for younger kids. Teens, on the other hand, would have no problem with it. The illustrations were truly outstanding and completely enhanced the text. I’m certain that alone raised my rating by at least a star. Overall, I’m extremely thrilled to add this precious gem to my collection.

**"The Dragon of Winterfell" by George R. R. Martin: A Captivating Tale for Young Readers**

When the Metaxy editions announced that they had acquired the rights to Martin's books, I was overjoyed! I read his "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, which is still incomplete, in three months and was truly amazed.

The first reading for this year that I hope will be a fruitful year of readings.

A short and lovely novel reminded me of the song of ice and fire and the world of winter, ice, and dragons... the world of George R. R. Martin from which you never expect the unexpected.

Reading is a wonderful journey that takes us to different worlds and introduces us to various characters and stories.

This particular novel has captured my attention with its vivid descriptions and engaging plot.

The world of ice and fire is a complex and fascinating one, filled with political intrigue, magic, and epic battles.

As I turn the pages, I am drawn deeper into this world, eager to discover what will happen next.

I can't wait to see how the story unfolds and how the characters will develop.

It's moments like these that make reading such a joy and a source of inspiration.

I look forward to many more such reading experiences in the coming year.
