PROS: The book neatly expounds the essence of theology and makes a remarkable distinction between practical and academic theology. Precisely due to this, readers from both camps, that is, all of us, can reap the benefits of reading it. This edition also presents reflection questions that are excellent for group study or personal contemplation.
CONS: Since the book is highly introductory, the authors are compelled to cover a vast amount of information, which leads to some errors. As a member of the Church of the Nazarene and fairly well-versed in John Wesley and Methodism, I noticed some of those (Methodist quadrilateral, anyone?).
CONCLUSION: Overall, it is a good book. Many people become so embroiled in academic theology that they forget that theology occurs naturally in the church and is inherent in all followers of Christ. This book manages to illustrate that using fancy words is not the task of theology. I can envision myself using it in small group settings with new believers or lay people.
