Heart-warming and humorous short stories about a Canadian family and their neighbours can truly touch our souls.

One such story might involve the family's friendly interactions with their elderly neighbour. The neighbour, who is a bit of a character, often shares his wisdom and unique perspectives with the family.

Another story could be about a neighbourhood block party where the Canadian family plays a central role in bringing everyone together. There are games, delicious food, and lots of laughter.

However, the last story is the one that really made me cry. It was about a difficult time when the family faced a crisis. Their neighbours, without hesitation, rallied around them, offering support, kindness, and love.

This story shows the true power of community and the importance of having good neighbours. It reminds us that in times of need, we can always count on those around us.

These short stories about the Canadian family and their neighbours are not only entertaining but also deeply moving. They make us believe that there is still kindness and warmth in the world.

I hadn't originally planned on reading this book as it was one that my mother had borrowed from the library. However, the title caught my attention and the blurb seemed decent.

It chronicles the life of a family consisting of a mum, dad, two kids, and a dog. I later discovered that not only is it a sequel but also based on a very popular and well-known Canadian radio show. Consequently, there is no information provided about any of the characters, the setting, or any background details. It appears to be assumed that if you are reading this book, you are already familiar with it and don't require any of those particulars.

Nevertheless, for someone like me who lacks that prior knowledge, it is extremely confusing. It wasn't until at least halfway through the book that I had any inkling of Morley's job, and even then, I only knew that she worked 'in theatre' by the end.

Each chapter presents a different adventure, and none of them continue from the previous one. Most of the story centers around the father, Dave, and he seems to be the catalyst for most of the incidents. The majority of these incidents are humorous in nature, although two of them were more somber, especially the last chapter. In fact, I found the last chapter to be quite emotional and perhaps the best one in the entire book.

It was a very easy read with rather simple and un-dramatic writing, so it didn't require much effort. It was fairly enjoyable, although it would have been even more so with more information about the family.

I think I might be getting addicted to these stories.

There’s something truly captivating about how normal, yet unlucky many of the experiences recorded in this collection are.

It’s always a good sign when you close a book with a wide smile on your face, and I certainly did with this one.

The way the author has presented these ordinary yet extraordinary tales has left me longing for more.

I’m dying to read the next ones in the series, but unfortunately, lack of library access has stopped me in my tracks.

I find myself constantly thinking about the stories and characters, wondering what adventures they’ll embark on next.

Despite the setback of not being able to visit the library, I’m determined to find a way to get my hands on the next installment.

Maybe I’ll have to explore other options like purchasing the book or looking for it online.

Until then, I’ll continue to dwell on the wonderful world that the author has created and eagerly anticipate the day when I can continue my literary journey.

Elaine just gave this one to me.

I have never heard of Stuart McLean before. In fact, this whole thing is very new and different for me to explore.

Well, unfortunately, I didn't manage to finish this book. It simply wasn't to my taste. It was too folky for my liking.

Maybe if I had a greater appreciation for that particular style, I might have enjoyed it more. But as it stands, it just didn't click with me.

However, I'm still glad that Elaine recommended it as it gave me the opportunity to try something outside of my usual reading preferences.

Who knows, maybe in the future I'll give it another chance and have a different experience.

For now, though, I'll be moving on to something else that might better suit my literary tastes.

This was an outstanding discovery (a big thank you to Janee!). It's precisely the kind of book one would love to pick up on a fall afternoon.

Regrettably, my library didn't have the exact same book that Janae recommended. However, I found out that there are several books by Stuart McLean, each containing collections of essays about Vinyl Cafe. It took me a few essays to get a sense of the author's rhythm. I truly wished I could have heard him narrate the stories as I felt I was missing out on some of the depth. But then, I found myself laughing out loud or snickering at certain parts in each essay. My absolute favorites were "Christmas Presents," "The Bare Truth," and "Odd Jobs."

The final section of this collection consisted of more reflective stories, which caught me off guard after reading so many hilarious essays. Among them, my favorite was the final story about Art Gillespie, an older friend of Dave's who passed away. Perhaps it was because we had recently lost a friend and the concept of mortality was weighing heavily on my mind. I really loved the following paragraph. I thought McLean expressed it beautifully.

"As the months passed, Dave's anxiety slowly faded - slowly Art joined that woolly corner of Dave's brain where sorrow and regret hung out. It was a corner Dave tried to avoid, a place he was pushed into from time to time, sometimes by something someone did or said, but just as often by a smell, the wind, the color of the sky."

And now, I have this strange urge to have a chocolate bar in my bedside drawer. If you read the book, you'll understand why.

I would give it a 3.5 if I could. It consists of light-hearted every day stories. The stories have their own charm, but at times they can be a little lengthy and repetitive. However, it's a redeeming feature that all the stories finish strong, leaving a lasting impression. What I really love about it is that it's Canadian. It gives a unique perspective and flavor that is distinctively Canadian. The cultural references and settings add an extra layer of authenticity to the stories. It's like taking a peek into the lives of ordinary Canadians and experiencing their joys and sorrows. Overall, despite its minor flaws, it's an enjoyable read that I would recommend to others who are looking for some light-hearted entertainment with a Canadian twist.

Very good. It's truly a challenging task to review a series like this, considering that each entry is so strikingly similar to the others. And yet, when evaluated on its own merits and in comparison to the broader body of work, it still manages to shine brightly. Mr. McLean has always been extremely consistent in his output.

This particular volume being an earlier one, I couldn't help but notice that a significant amount of text had been edited out from the live performance versions that I'm familiar with. I find myself wondering if this was due to time constraints during the live shows, or perhaps Stuart McLean himself thought that the additional content was simply superfluous and didn't contribute to the overall narrative.

The most notable omission was the story titled "The Last Kind Word Blues". I made a concerted effort to track down an audio version of this story but to no avail. I'm left to wonder if it was ever performed live. I can somewhat understand why it might not have been. Among all the stories about Dave, this one stands out as the one where he strays too far from the Dave that I've come to know and love. He is portrayed as being covetous and deceitful. While Dave may have committed numerous grievous offenses over the years, when he lies about the sale of this record, he ceases to be the same Dave in my eyes. Stuart attempts to redeem Dave at the end by having him perform a good deed, but it fails to resonate with me. In fact, this is probably the weakest story in his entire canon, in my opinion. I think he was aiming to develop the character into something more complex, but unfortunately, he ended up diminishing him in the process.

The remainder of the book was, as expected, very good. The final story, in particular, had a profound impact on me. It managed to tear at my heartstrings and had me on the verge of tears for a character that we had never heard about before and was being told about by another. I'm aware that Stuart was trying to tell a story about true love, but boy... this was a love that felt much truer than anything you could find in a fable or a Disney movie. And the loss of this love was all the more heartbreaking. Overall, this book is well worth reading.
