Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko is one of the towering figures of Abstract Expressionism, and of twentieth-century painting as a whole. His paintings, predominantly in a large format and featuring horizontal layers of pigment on a monochrome foundation, occupy a permanent place in our collective pictorial memory as an epitome of heroic Modernism. This beautifully produced oversize monograph presents over 100 of his works in full-color plates. By considering Rothko's central groups of works from all creative periods--among them the Rothko Room in the Phillips Collection and the Harvard Murals at Harvard University--this book documents the artist's struggle to arrive at "a consummated experience between picture and onlooker." Rothko's adamant insistence on controlling the presentation of his works set him apart from the art scene as early as the 1950s. His pictures were to be hung closely together in small rooms, in which soft lighting and imposing scale were to provide an immediate viewing experience. This book attempts to recreate that atmosphere with a large, uninterrupted plate section that brings to life the vibrancy and power of these paintings. In addition to more than 100 color works, "Mark Rothko" includes essays about specific groups of work, an extensive, year by year, descriptive chronology of his life and work, and an exhaustive bibliography of writings about him from the past five years. It is an essential addition to any collection on twentieth-century art.

Having this chronological career-spanning collection is of great significance as it vividly showcases Rothko's artistic evolution. The early works may not resonate with me as deeply as the mature color field era, yet it is truly fascinating to observe his starting point. It serves as a valuable reminder that an artist encompasses far more than just the works I hold in highest regard. After all, one must commence from somewhere before achieving great heights. Therefore, I am grateful for the opportunity to spend some time with these often overlooked paintings, which are not merely those of a young artist. They play a crucial role in paving the way for his later achievements. You can witness his unwavering pursuit and the seeds of what would later become his most renowned masterpieces can be detected in these early pieces.

The essays, although not mind-blowing, are solid and worthy of your attention. The book's size is reasonable, although I would undoubtedly prefer a larger one to better emphasize the significance of scale. The clarity and color reproduction are also good, yet they could potentially be enhanced in today's context. These are minor quibbles that, if I were to grade the entire book on an equal scale, might place it at four stars. However, I am not. The assembled paintings are of utmost importance, and this is indeed a very fine collection. It has provided me with more to contemplate and admire, and for that, I am truly grateful.

As I was sitting in front of the television, engrossed in a quasi-documentary about Rothko, I couldn't help but engage in a one-sided conversation with the screen. You see, I have this strange habit of often speaking to my TV. So, I said to the documentary, "Okay, I'm not a fan of Abstract Expressionism. Show me why I should care about Rothko."

To my surprise, the documentary did just that. It delved deep into the life and work of Rothko, revealing the profound emotions and ideas that lay behind his abstract paintings.

It showed how Rothko used color and form to create a sense of atmosphere and mood, and how his works could evoke powerful emotions in the viewer. By the end of the documentary, I found myself completely won over. So now, I think I like Rothko. His paintings have a beauty and depth that I never expected to find in Abstract Expressionism.

I'm excited to explore more of his works and see what other emotions and ideas they can inspire in me.

Probably the coolest thing about this book is that it covers Rothko's work chronologically.

It delves back quite early, enabling you to witness how he evolved over time.

The page size and print quality are decent.

However, I yearn to discover a larger and more vividly printed volume of Rothko's work, even if it isn't as comprehensive.

This would allow for a more immersive experience, as the colors and details of his paintings could be more fully appreciated.

Perhaps such a volume would exist in a museum or a specialized art library.

Even if it means having to travel to see it, I believe it would be well worth the effort.

To truly understand and be inspired by Rothko's art, one needs to see it in the best possible form.

Today, exactly 50 years ago on the 25th of February 1970, Mark Rothko, the renowned artist, sadly took his own life.

As I was perusing through the last chapter of this exhibition catalogue, which presented a chronology of his life, I just happened to notice that round number. It truly struck me. How strange and yet how deeply sad it is.

Overall, this book has been quite helpful for my essay. It showcases a plethora of paintings in beautiful print. However, unfortunately, none of the Rothko Chapel paintings are included, which I really require for my work. It's a bit of a disappointment, but still, the book has provided valuable insights and a wonderful visual display of his other works.

I can't help but feel a sense of loss when I think about Rothko's untimely death. His art had such a profound impact on the art world, and his works continue to be studied and admired today.
